    Strong CP, Up-Quark Mass, and the Randall-Sundrum Microscope

    In the Randall-Sundrum model, setting the ratio of up and down quark masses mu/md<<1m_u/m_d << 1, relevant to the strong CP problem, does not require chiral symmetry or fine-tuning, due to exponential bulk fermion profiles. We point out that such geometric suppression of the mass of a fermion magnifies the masses of its corresponding Kaluza-Klein (KK) states. In this sense, these KK states act as "microscopes" for probing light quark and lepton masses. In simple realizations, this hypothesis can be testable at future colliders, like the LHC, by measuring the spectrum of level-1 KK fermions. The microscope can then provide an experimental test for the vanishing of mum_u in the ultraviolet, independently of non-perturbative determinations, by lattice simulations or other means, at hadronic scales. We also briefly comment on application of our microscope idea to other fermions, such as the electron and neutrinos.Comment: 7 pages. New discussions and references added.     The contribution of transcriptomic and proteomic analysis in elucidating stress adaptation responses of Listeria monocytogenes

    The foodborne transmission of Listeria monocytogenes requires physiological adaptation to various conditions, including the cold, osmotic, heat, acid, alkaline, and oxidative stresses, associated with food hygiene, processing, and preservation measures. We review the current knowledge on the molecular stress adaptation responses in L. monocytogenes cells as revealed through transcriptome, proteome, genetic, and physiological analysis. The adaptation of L. monocytogenes to stress exposure is achieved through global expression changes in a large number of cellular components. In addition, the cross-protection of L. monocytogenes exposed to different stress environments might be conferred through various cellular machineries that seem to be commonly activated by the different stresses. To assist in designing L. monocytogenes mitigation strategies for ready-to-eat food products, further experiments are warranted to specifically evaluate the effects of food composition, additives, preservatives, and processing technologies on the modulation of L. monocytogenes cellular components in response to specific stresses

    Novel dual peptisers and curing agents derived from PET waste as N-alkyl benzene dicarboxamides for EDPM waste

    149-152Ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) is widely used in the manufacturing of various components in rubber industries and hence recycling of scrap rubber is a major problem. In the present study, EPDM rubber waste powder has been recycled successfully by using N-alkyl benzene dicarboxamides, derived from PET wasteand other additives. Three aminolysed end products namely 1,4-benzene dicarboxamide, 1,4-benzene dicarbohydrazide and N,N′‐diaminoethyl 1,4‐benzene dicarboxamidewere used as peptisers and curing agents in the EPDM waste formulations. EPDM rubber waste sheets have been prepared at comparatively low temperature using two roll mill and compression moulding machine. Tensile strength, % elongation and hardness have been found in the range 12.23-20.19 kg/cm2, 107-145 % and 46-61, respectively. It has been expected that the developed reclaimed process described in this paper will promisingly support the protection of environment and conservation of resources with favors to rubber waste generated throughout the world

    Improvement of Thermal Insulation and Crack Resistance of Plaster of Paris Composites at High Temperature

    344–347In the present work, silica gel is extracted from raw rice husk, incorporated in Plaster of Paris formulations and casted into sheets of varying thicknesses. The sheets were tested for thermal insulation at 60, 100, 150 & 200 °C and compared with blank formulations. Plaster of Paris composites with silica gel have shown remarkable increase in thermal insulation properties and crack resistance. Thermally insulated Plaster of Paris composites with excellent crack resistance have been developed which can be used competently for prolonged times even at high temperatures offering better serviceability and safety to the buildings

    INSILICO ANALYSIS OF DIETARY AGENTS AS ANTICANCER INHIBITORS OF INSULIN LIKE GROWTH FACTOR 1 RECEPTOR (IGF1R)

    Objective: Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) is over-expressed in a number of cancer cell lines and has been implicated to play a role in oncogenesis and suppression of apoptosis. Thus, the inhibition of IGF-1R activity leads to tumor regression and renders IGF-1R a plausible target for the development of anti-cancer drugs. Dietary agents are known to interfere with IGF signaling and offer a foundation for developing nontoxic agents that override any toxicity associated with synthetic IGF inhibitors. This study is designed to obtain structural motifs and active residues that preferentially interact with IGF1Rand to identify the phytochemicals from different plants and act as potential anticancer drug leadsMethods: Thus, six dietary agents known to interfere directly with circulating levels of IGF1R were undertaken for docking studies. A molecular docking simulation model of IGF1R with its bound ligand was established and validated to be used as a reference model for the study.Results: The active site residuesGLU1080, MET 1082, GLU1081, GLU1027, GLU1145 and ARG1003 were found to play a significant role in binding mechanism. The ADME properties and drug likeliness of the ligands were rigorously analyzed under four criteria of known successful drug activity in the areas of GPCR ligand activity, ion channel modulation, kinase inhibition activity, nuclear receptor ligand activity and enzyme inhibition. The dietary agents Apigenin and Luteolin demonstrated reliable interaction with IGF1R (-5.78Kcal/mol and-5.70 Kcal/mol respectively)and displayed good pharmacokinetics properties.Conclusion: It is concluded that the explored dietary agents offer profound promise to be used natural inhibitors of IGF1R and thus may be useful for the preparation of different combinations and formulations for the management of tumors.Â

    Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive 1/r interaction: The case of self-trapping

    Amplifying on a proposal by O'Dell et al. for the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates of neutral atoms with attractive 1/r1/r interaction, we point out that the instance of self-trapping of the condensate, without external trap potential, is physically best understood by introducing appropriate "atomic" units. This reveals a remarkable scaling property: the physics of the condensate depends only on the two parameters N2a/auN^2 a/a_u and γ/N2\gamma/N^2, where NN is the particle number, aa the scattering length, aua_u the "Bohr" radius and γ\gamma the trap frequency in atomic units. We calculate accurate numerical results for self-trapping wave functions and potentials, for energies, sizes and peak densities, and compare with previous variational results. As a novel feature we point out the existence of a second solution of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation for negative scattering lengths, with and without trapping potential, which is born together with the ground state in a tangent bifurcation. This indicates the existence of an unstable collectively excited state of the condensate for negative scattering lengths.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
