Characterization of Eggshell and Natural Chloride Stabilized Soil Using Geophysical Techniques
Although many techniques are available for the evaluation of soil parameters, but a quick and efficient method is always welcome. To avoid the hassle calculation and tedious procedures of testing; practitioners seek a fast method for site implementation of laboratory results. In the recent era of development and technology, it has been necessary to adopt the advanced techniques to evaluate the geotechnical parameters. In the present study, correlations between Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and Maximum Dry Density (MDD); Electrical resistivity (Re) and Optimum moisture content (OMC) were derived. In the present study eggshell powder (ESP) as a waste material was used along with sodium chloride (NaCl) and polypropylene fiber (PPF) to stabilise the soil. Design of experiments was done by Taguchi technique using Minitab 17 software. A series of non-destructive UPV and Re tests was carried out on 21 days aged soil specimens. Results found ESP as the dominating factor, for attaining improvement in packing of soil particles and make soil resistive. The utility of the present study can be found in places where dense soil and electric resistive properties meets such as transmission lines and railway electric poles etc
An analysis of scientific computing environments : a consumer's view
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Computation for Design and Optimization Program, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 53).In the last three decades, with rapid advancements in the hardware and software industry, a large number of commercial and free open source languages and software have evolved. Many of these are Very High Level Languages (VHLLs) which can be easily used for scientific computing purposes such as algorithm testing and engineering computations. However, this vast pool of resources has not been utilized to its full potential. In this analysis, we will be looking at various simple and complex problems and how they can be approached in various languages. All the results will be uploaded on a website in the form of a wiki intended to be accessible to everyone. By analyzing standard problems encountered frequently in scientific computing, this wiki provides the users a performance based report which they can use to choose the best option for their particular applications. Simultaneously, a lexicon of standard codes will help them in learning those options which they want to use so that fear is not a barrier. The analysis also addresses some incompatibility issues within languages and their impact. This work is a preliminary investigation as part of Professor Alan Edelman's participation in the Numerical Mathematics Consortium. We expect the scientific computing community to benefit from this research as a whole, as this analysis will give them better alternatives for their computational needs.by Amit Soni.S.M

Significance of Stone Waste in Strength Improvement of Soil
The evolution of industries is essential for the economic growth of any country; however, this growth often comes with exploitation of natural resources and generation of wastes. The safe disposal and utilisation of industrial wastes has become essential for sustainable development. A possible approach would be to utilize these wastes in construction industries. The stone industry is one such flawed industries that generates waste in dust or slurry form; this leads harmful impacts on human beings, animals, and surrounding areas which, in turn, can lead to soil infertility. In the present study, stone waste was examined for its influence on maximum dry density (MDD), optimum water content (OMC) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil experimentally. Stone waste was used at 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, 16% and 20% by weight of soil and UCS tests were conducted at maturing periods of 7, 14 and 21 days. Test results reported that the incorporation of stone waste improved the compressive strength value significantly. Maximum dry density was enhanced; however, optimum water content was reduced with the use of stone waste in soil due to its fine particles. ESTIMATION OF TOTAL PHENOLIC AND FLAVONOID CONTENT OF POLYHERBAL FORMULATION DASHANG LEPA
Background: Indian system of medicine mainly based on polyherbal compound to treat various types of diseases. Dashang lepa is one of the prestigious formulation of ten indigenous drugs which are having predominantly anti-inflammatory properties and clinically used in inflammatory swelling like boil, furunculosis, cellulitis, erysipelas etc. As several reports are on various individual phytochemical, phenolic and flavonoid content but none is having study of polyherbal compound Dashang lepa. Objectives: Total phenolic and total flavonoid content were studied of alcoholic extract of Dashang lepa. Method: Methanolic extraction was done by hot percolation method through soxhlet apparatus. Phenolic content was estimated using Follin ciocalteau reagent, flavonoid using aluminum chloride (2%) reagent as quercetin equivalent. Results: Estimation of total phenolic and total flavonoid content showed that Dashang lepa extract was having phenolic content (15.8±1.14) ug Gallic acid equivalents (GAE) and flavonoid content (22.4±2.54) in ug of quercetin equivalents (QE)
Assessment of labor room communication skills among postgraduate students of obstetrics and gynecology
Background: “Communication with patients” is an important skill needed for every physician in their clinical practice. These soft skills are required in dealing with patients at every step which include history taking from the patients, explaining them the diagnosis, the prognosis of the disease with associated complications. Dealing with empathy, taking informed consent, explaining the operative procedure and the complications associated with surgery, the art of breaking bad news are the mandatory skills for a good clinician. Labouring women like other patients also require special attention and empathy. So, the residents working in labor room need commitment to develop these soft skills in order to improve the labor room experience of expectant mothers. Objective of this study was to analyse role of a formal training in labor room communication skills among post graduate students of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.Methods: Faculty and students’ sensitization was done after approval from institutional ‘ethics committee’ for conducting this study. Pre-workshop assessment of residents for communication skills attitude and effective communication was done through ‘communication skill attitude scale’ (CSAS) and ‘GAP-KALAMAZOO scale’. Workshop for communication skills on the framework of Calgary Cambridge patient interview model and online teaching of students through what’s app videos, role-play demonstrations was followed by reassessment of the residents through above used scales.Results: Results depicted both improvements in attitude and effective communication skills among residents. 100% of the students were convinced and opined that good communication skills necessary for perfect clinical practice.Conclusions: The skill to communicate with patients is a fine art and needs to be mastered to be a good clinician. A formal training in effective communication skills is absolutely necessary to bring professionalism in medical practice
STUDY ON AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (DRY TYPE) IN CONTEXT TO PITTA VIDAGDHA DRISHTI AND ITS AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT
Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of the vision loss and blindness in people above 50 years of age. ARMD is characterised by central vision loss, distorted or blurred vision, decreased visual acuity, Central or para-central blind spot (scotoma). An almost similar clinical condition to ARMD is seen in Pitta Vidagdha Dristi. Dry ARMD is more prevalent (90%) and slower in progress than Wet ARMD. The Ayurvedic management of Pitta Vidagdha Drishti is similar to Pittaja Abhishyanda. With this background a specific line of treatment for the Pitta Vidagdha Drisht in Sushruta Samhita is adopted. In this study, total 22 patients, 12 in group A (Triphala Ghrita, Saptamrita Lauha, Rasayana Churna and Shatavari etc.) & 10 in Group B (Control) were registered. The duration of therapy was of 3 months in both the groups. Group A showed better results on ARMD when compared with that of Group B especially on perception of flashes of light (72.23%) & dim light adaptation problem (45.23%). So ARMD (Dry type) can be better managed by Ayurvedic treatment group than the Modern multivitamin group
