Using handheld pocket computers in a wireless telemedicine system
Objectives: To see if senior emergency nurse practitioners can provide support to
inexperienced ones in a Minor Injuries Unit by using a wireless LAN system of
telemedicine transmitting images to a PDA when they were on duty. In addition,
whether such a system could be sufficiently accurate to make clinical diagnoses with
a high level of diagnostic confidence. This would permit an overall lower grade of
nurse to be employed to manage most of the cases as they arrive with a proportionate
lowering of costs.
Methods: The wireless LAN equipment could roam in the Minor Injuries Unit and
the experienced emergency Nurse practitioners could be at home, shopping or even
at a considerable distance from the centre.
Thirty pictorial images of patients who had been sent to the Review Clinic were
transmitted to a PDA various distances of one to sixteen miles from the centre. Two
senior emergency nurse practitioners viewed the images and opined on the diagnosis,
their degree of confidence in the diagnosis and their opinion of the quality of the
image.
Results: the images of patients were sharp, clear, and of diagnostic quality. The
image quality was only uncertain, as was the level of confidence of the diagnosis if
the patient was very dark skinned.
Conclusions: The wireless LAN system works with a remote PDA in this clinical
situation. However there are question marks over the availability of enough
experienced emergency nurse practitioners to staff a service that provides senior
cover for longer parts of the day and at weekends
Coherent pairing states for the Hubbard model
We consider the Hubbard model and its extensions on bipartite lattices. We
define a dynamical group based on the -pairing operators introduced by
C.N.Yang, and define coherent pairing states, which are combinations of
eigenfunctions of -operators. These states permit exact calculations of
numerous physical properties of the system, including energy, various
fluctuations and correlation functions, including pairing ODLRO to all orders.
This approach is complementary to BCS, in that these are superconducting
coherent states associated with the exact model, although they are not

Martian surface physical properties to be derived by radar altimeter on the Mars observer spacecraft
The potential is described of a candidate Mars Observer altimeter for determining dielectric properties of Mars regolith. It is pointed out that it is straightforward to use the time between altimeter pulse trains for passive radiometry (hence dielectric properties) and roughness can be derived. Given the mission plan the whole surface can be mapped at least three times, yielding data on seasonal variability
Techniques utilized in the simulated altitude testing of a 2D-CD vectoring and reversing nozzle
Simulated altitude testing of a two-dimensional, convergent-divergent, thrust vectoring and reversing exhaust nozzle was accomplished. An important objective of this test was to develop test hardware and techniques to properly operate a vectoring and reversing nozzle within the confines of an altitude test facility. This report presents detailed information on the major test support systems utilized, the operational performance of the systems and the problems encountered, and test equipment improvements recommended for future tests. The most challenging support systems included the multi-axis thrust measurement system, vectored and reverse exhaust gas collection systems, and infrared temperature measurement systems used to evaluate and monitor the nozzle. The feasibility of testing a vectoring and reversing nozzle of this type in an altitude chamber was successfully demonstrated. Supporting systems performed as required. During reverser operation, engine exhaust gases were successfully captured and turned downstream. However, a small amount of exhaust gas spilled out the collector ducts' inlet openings when the reverser was opened more than 60 percent. The spillage did not affect engine or nozzle performance. The three infrared systems which viewed the nozzle through the exhaust collection system worked remarkably well considering the harsh environment
Application of remote sensing to state and regional problems
The methods and procedures used, accomplishments, current status, and future plans are discussed for each of the following applications of LANDSAT in Mississippi: (1) land use planning in Lowndes County; (2) strip mine inventory and reclamation; (3) white-tailed deer habitat evaluation; (4) remote sensing data analysis support systems; (5) discrimination of unique forest habitats in potential lignite areas; (6) changes in gravel operations; and (7) determining freshwater wetlands for inventory and monitoring. The documentation of all existing software and the integration of the image analysis and data base software into a single package are now considered very high priority items
Transient Random Walks in Random Environment on a Galton-Watson Tree
We consider a transient random walk in random environment on a
Galton--Watson tree. Under fairly general assumptions, we give a sharp and
explicit criterion for the asymptotic speed to be positive. As a consequence,
situations with zero speed are revealed to occur. In such cases, we prove that
is of order of magnitude , with . We also
show that the linearly edge reinforced random walk on a regular tree always has
a positive asymptotic speed, which improves a recent result of Collevecchio
\cite{Col06}
Variable Step Random Walks and Self-Similar Distributions
We study a scenario under which variable step random walks give anomalous
statistics. We begin by analyzing the Martingale Central Limit Theorem to find
a sufficient condition for the limit distribution to be non-Gaussian. We note
that the theorem implies that the scaling index is 1/2. For
corresponding continuous time processes, it is shown that the probability
density function satisfies the Fokker-Planck equation. Possible forms
for the diffusion coefficient are given, and related to . Finally, we
show how a time-series can be used to distinguish between these variable
diffusion processes and L\'evy dynamics.Comment: 13pages, 2 figure
Quantum wires from coupled InAs/GaAs strained quantum dots
The electronic structure of an infinite 1D array of vertically coupled
InAs/GaAs strained quantum dots is calculated using an eight-band
strain-dependent k-dot-p Hamiltonian. The coupled dots form a unique quantum
wire structure in which the miniband widths and effective masses are controlled
by the distance between the islands, d. The miniband structure is calculated as
a function of d, and it is shown that for d>4 nm the miniband is narrower than
the optical phonon energy, while the gap between the first and second minibands
is greater than the optical phonon energy. This leads to decreased optical
phonon scattering, providing improved quantum wire behavior at high
temperatures. These miniband properties are also ideal for Bloch oscillation.Comment: 5 pages revtex, epsf, 8 postscript figure
