Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 22-26).Genetically encoded ratiometric sensors can provide valuable mechanistic understanding of biological systems. Characterization of cellular response of these sensors is the first step in validating their use. Here, we characterize the response of a genetically encoded Hâ‚‚Oâ‚‚ sensor, HyPer, expressed in HeLa cells. Using quantitative fluorescence microscopy, we found significant heterogeneity in HyPer response among the cell population. Further analysis showed that the variation in HyPer response was dependent on expression of HyPer protein as well as on cell cycle phase. Cells with higher levels of expressed HyPer protein showed a stronger HyPer response to Hâ‚‚Oâ‚‚. Cells synchronized in S-phase showed a weaker HyPer response than unsynchronized cells. It was determined that this weaker response could be a function of higher antioxidant capacity in S-phase cells. The dependence of HyPer response on these factors needs to be accounted for to avoid experimental artifacts.by Sohail Feroz Ali.S.M

The basic purpose of this research is to establish a methodology for studying and understanding contributing factors towards fashion consciousness and its impact on hijab buying behavior of hijabistas present in Universities of Lahore. This population was represented by 100 respondents taken from top five universities of Lahore. These respondents were asked to fill a questionnaire and return. The data collected was statistically analyzed by using Pearson’s correlation technique and linear regression analysis which supported the hypotheses and generated evidence in favor of the hypotheses. It is clearly evident from the results that way of dressing, sources of fashion information, fashion motivation and uniqueness of fashion are the determinants of fashion consciousness of hijabistas. Fashion consciousness positively impacts hijabistas hijab buying behavior as evident by the significance of the impact. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa\u27s government and new teacher induction policy: Is the government in harmony with national and international trends in teacher education?

Role of competent teachers is fundamental in improving quality of education, therefore we find more organized and rigorous teacher education programs in those countries which have better quality of education. Quality teachers can be produced from quality pre-service teacher education programs. In Pakistan, raising teachers’ status and competency received a remarkable attention for the last two decades. There has been consistent emphasis on improving quality of teacher education almost in all the National Education Policies in Pakistan. And this emphasis was translated into various reforms and development initiatives such the initiation of B.Ed. (Hons.) and ADE programs. Although due to various causes the targets have not been achieved most of the time, however the need for improvement has been continuously highlighted and solutions have always been proposed. Similar guidelines for the improvement of teacher education are provided in both of the recent National Education policies of Pakistan 2009 and 2017. However this time, one of the obstacles before the initiatives of the policies, especially the new teacher education programs is the provincial autonomy. For example, the new teacher induction policy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is in direct contradiction with the recommendations of the national education policies and international standards of teachers. This paper attempts to raise various critiqued questions on the new teacher induction policy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, specifically on the fact that the policy has eliminated the requirement of professional educational degrees for all teaching posts. This new induction policy is most likely to create imbalance in the education system by devaluing pre-service teacher education programs in the province. Resultantly, the struggles for raising the quality of education will remain fractional. Therefore, in order to effectively materialize the reforms of quality education, the KP’s government needs to revise this induction policy and give weightage to pre-service teacher education degrees (B.Ed. Hons & ADE). Because these professional teacher education degree holders have the competency to improve the quality of classroom learning along with overall education system

This research examines the role of different media outlets in creating political awareness among students. This study shows that students of University of Gujrat consume mass media for both entertainment and political information. However, Television considered the best source of political information. Through this study agenda and framing theory used which revealed that media has an effect on its target audience. While, survey method has used to gauge the media consumption among university students. Mass media is considered a source of information that has the power to change choice of people. Media present issues to its audience with an effect that public forms opinion according to media’s emphasis on issue. OBJECTIVES: In developing countries, road traffic accidents are common and primarily affect middle-aged men. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of epidural hematoma in people of various ages owing to road traffic incidents on computed tomography scan brain. METHODOLOGY: From February 2018 to January 2021, a cross-sectional descriptive study was done in the Department of Neurosurgery. A total of 460 individuals were chosen from emergency room visits due to traffic accidents. Individuals who had suffered a head injury and had an epidural hematoma on a computed tomography scan were included in the study. The frequency of epidural hematoma in different ages was determined. RESULTS: A total of 460 patients were enrolled in the trial, with 196 (42.60%) having epidural hematomas and 264 having no epidural hematomas (57.39%). Males accounted for 152 (77.55%) of the 196 epidural hematoma cases, while females accounted for 44 (22.45%), with an average age of 19 years and a range of 2-55±9.59 years. All the people who had a head injury were divided into three groups. The prevalence of epidural hematoma varied by age, with 75.51% (15-44 years), 20.40% (14 years), and 4.08% (>45 years) being the most common. CONCLUSION: It was concluded from this study that epidural hematoma determined by computed tomography scan brain is more frequent in middle age

Dyslipidemia and mean lipid profile in patients with liver cirrhosis

Background: Patients with liver disorders are often found to have deranged lipid profile. Clear decline is observed in the levels of cholesterol as well as TG among individuals having severe hepatitis and liver failure as synthesis of lipoprotein is reduced. This study was done to determine the frequency of dyslipidemia and the mean lipid profile values in patients of liver cirrhosis. Methods: A cross sectional, descriptive study, done at the Department of Medicine, Medical Unit-1, Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, from July to December 2019. A total of 246 patients presented with cirrhosis of liver of age 20-60 years and both genders were included. Analysis for serum total cholesterol (TC) level, serum triglycerides level, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were done and findings were noted. Results: Mean age was 51.67±6.21 years. Out of the 246 patients, 153 (62.20%) were male and 93 (37.80%) were females with male to female ratio of 1.6:1. Mean values of lipid were, LDL cholesterol 95.76±29.65 mg/dl, HDL 43.37±11.46 mg/dl, TC 147.51±42.69 mg/dl and TG 101.29±21.59 mg/dl. Dyslipidemia was found in 59 (23.98%) patients, whereas there was no dyslipidemia in 187 (76.02%) patients. Conclusions: Frequency of dyslipidemia in cirrhotic patients is high. Evaluating patients of liver cirrhosis, dyslipidemia need to be considered for early recognition and analysis
