Techno-economic analysis of residential thermal flexibility for demand side management
The continuing rise in solar and wind production leads to an increasing demand of flexibility to stabilize the electricity grid. Furthermore, we can assume a gradual but intensive rise in the use of electrical heatpumps for household spatial heating, for different reasons. Therefore, this paper investigates the feasibility and viability of entering the flexibility market by aggregating residential thermal loads. For this research, a dataset of 200 dwellings in the Netherlands, equipped with a heatpump and smart metering infrastructure, is analysed. By means of a greybox modeling approach, a thermal model and control framework have been set up for every house, in order to identify the load shift potential and the accompanying cost of providing flexibility for the houses. We find that thermal flexibility is asymmetric: downwards flexibility is, apart from much more dependent on outdoor temperature than upwards flexibility, strictly lower than upwards flexibility. The cost for downwards flexibility is strictly negative in terms of the prosumer. Concerning upwards flexibility, the cost is most of the time positive. Moreover, it can be concluded that there is a potentially viable business case for the flexibility aggregator
Data-driven and Model-based Verification: a Bayesian Identification Approach
This work develops a measurement-driven and model-based formal verification
approach, applicable to systems with partly unknown dynamics. We provide a
principled method, grounded on reachability analysis and on Bayesian inference,
to compute the confidence that a physical system driven by external inputs and
accessed under noisy measurements, verifies a temporal logic property. A case
study is discussed, where we investigate the bounded- and unbounded-time safety
of a partly unknown linear time invariant system
Observer-based correct-by-design controller synthesis
Current state-of-the-art correct-by-design controllers are designed for
full-state measurable systems. This work first extends the applicability of
correct-by-design controllers to partially observable LTI systems. Leveraging
2nd order bounds we give a design method that has a quantifiable robustness to
probabilistic disturbances on state transitions and on output measurements. In
a case study from smart buildings we evaluate the new output-based
correct-by-design controller on a physical system with limited sensor
information

Individual variation in pup vocalizations and absence of behavioral signs of maternal vocal recognition in Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii)
Individually stereotyped vocalizations often play an important role in relocation
of offspring in gregarious breeders. In phocids, mothers often alternate between foraging at sea and attending their pup. Pup calls are individually distinctive in various
phocid species. However, experimental evidence for maternal recognition is rare.
In this study, we recorded Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) pup vocalizations
at two whelping patches in Atka Bay, Antarctica, and explored individual vocal
variation based on eight vocal parameters. Overall, 58% of calls were correctly classified according to individual. For males (n = 12) and females (n = 9), respectively,
nine and seven individuals were correctly identified based on vocal parameters. To
investigate whether mothers respond differently to calls of familiar vs. unfamiliar
pups, we conducted playback experiments with 21 mothers. Maternal responses
did not differ between playbacks of own, familiar, and unfamiliar pup calls. We
suggest that Weddell seal pup calls may need to contain only a critical amount
of individually distinct information because mothers and pups use a combination
of sensory modalities for identification. However, it cannot be excluded that pup
developmental factors and differing environmental factors between colonies affect
pup acoustic behavior and the role of acoustic cues in the relocation process
