AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in bone quantity based on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality based on trabecular bone score (TBS) in Graves' disease patients after anti-thyroid therapy.Research design and methodThis retrospective study included premenopausal female and male patients with Graves' disease who received BMD measurement more than two times during treatment. BMD and thyroid function tests with free thyroxine (FT4), total triiodothyronine (T3), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) levels were collected two times during follow-up. TBS was calculated using TBS insightÂź software (version 2.1) from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry images.ResultsThirty Graves' disease patients (17 males, 56%; 13 premenopausal females, 44%) with a mean age of 35.3 ± 9.9 years were included. The mean follow-up period was 20.7 ± 8.5 months. The median levels of FT4, TSH and TRAb improved at follow-up [2.55 ng/dL (Interquartile range (IQR) 2.07–3.78) to 1.28 ng/dL (IQR 1.23–1.39), 0.015 mIU/L (IQR 0.01–0.04) to 0.89 mIU/L (IQR 0.35–1.55), 17.0 IU/L (IQR 5.0–40.3) to 5.0 IU/L (5.0–6.0), respectively; p < 0.001]. Median BMD (lumbar spine) values also improved from 1.118 g/cm2 (IQR 1.000–1.119) to 1.167 g/cm2 (IQR 1.050–1.219) (p = 0.001) at follow-up. TBS increased from 1.377 (IQR 1.299–1.422) to 1.390 (IQR 1.327–1.430) after treatment (p = 0.038).ConclusionBoth bone quality and density improved after anti-thyroid treatment in premenopausal female and male Graves' disease patients

This study identifies the number of pneumoconiosis patients after eliminating deceased patients between 2003 and 2008 as of January 1st and estimates it for the next five years. From 2003 to 2008, the pneumoconiosis patients were 16,929, 17,224, 17,366, 17,566, 17,542, and 17,546, respectively. The number of pneumoconiosis patients will have increased by 1,014 from 2008 to 18,560 in 2013 after applying the average change rates taken from 2003 to 2007. It takes 15-20 yr to develop coal workers' pneumoconiosis (the main cause in Korea) and patients will continue to be diagnosed with pneumoconiosis for some years to come since it has only been 20 yr since the decline of the coal mining industry in Korea. In addition, pneumoconiosis patients are increasing in industries in which the risk of pneumoconiosis was relatively low shows the necessity to improve dust-exposed workplace environments

Tc-99m sestamibi single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) has been used to help surgeons explore the location of parathyroid diseases, but quantitative parameters have not been systemically investigated for this purpose. We aimed to establish objective criteria for adenoma and hyperplasia using the standardized uptake value (SUV) in patients with hyperparathyroidism. Thirty-nine hyperparathyroid patients (male/female: 17/22, age: 58.33 +/- 11.69 years) with at least 1 uptake-positive lesion of any degree by visual assessment in preoperative Tc-99m sestamibi quantitative SPECT/CT were included from Oct 2015 to Oct 2017. Pathologically, 44 lesions (32 adenomas and 12 hyperplasia) were identified. All patients experienced normalized levels of intact parathyroid hormone immediately after surgery. Quantitative SPECT/CT was performed at 10 minute and 2 hour post injection of Tc-99m sestabmibi (dose = 740 MBq), and maximum SUV (SUVmax) was measured for the parathyroid lesions. Experienced pathologists evaluated the percentage cellular proportions of chief cells, oxyphil cells, and clear cells. SUVmax (g/mL) of adenomas, hyperplasia, and reference thyroid tissue were 12.92 +/- 6.68, 7.90 +/- 5.49, and 7.01 +/- 2.62 at 10min (early phase), decreasing to 7.46 +/- 5.66, 4.65 +/- 3.14, and 2.21 +/- 1.07 at 2 hour (delayed phase), respectively. The adenomas showed significantly higher SUVmax than both the hyperplasia (P = .0131) and reference thyroid tissue (P < .0001) along the early and delayed phases, but the SUVmax of the hyperplasia did not differ from that of the reference thyroid tissue (P = .4196). The adenomas and hyperplasia were discriminated from the reference thyroid tissue using a cutoff SUVmax of 3.26 at the delayed phase. The adenomas had lower %proportions of oxyphil cells than the hyperplasia (P = .0054), but its SUVmax at the delayed phase was positively correlated with the %proportions of mitochondria-abundant oxyphil cells (rho = 0.418,P = .0173). The hyperplasia showed no correlation between SUVmax and cellular proportions. SUVmax at the delayed phase in the Tc-99m sestamibi quantitative SPECT/CT was useful for the identification and differentiation of parathyroid lesions causing hyperparathyroidism.Y

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships of resilience, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), and quality of life of breast cancer patients. The findings from this study would provide baseline data needed for nursing intervention. METHODS: A sample of 129 breast cancer patients was recruited from three hospitals in J and C cities in Korea. The survey was conducted with participants by utilizing self-reported questionnaires. RESULTS: Quality of life showed statistically significant differences on religion (t=2.11, p=.033) and hobby (t=2.79, p=.006). Resilience and PTSD had a negative correlation (r=-.22, p=.010). Resilience and quality of life of the participants had a positive correlation (r=.58, p<.001), whereas PTSD and quality of life had a negative correlation (r=-.45, p<.001). Significant predictors of quality of life were resilience and PTSD. These variables explained 44.9% of the variance in quality of life. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that as resilience of breast cancer patients rose higher and PTSD got lower, their quality of life increased. Based on these results, nursing interventions directed towards improving resilience and relieving PTSD is proposed

Numerical Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Broadcast Scheme in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract. In this paper, we study the performance of IEEE 802.11 broadcast scheme in multihop wireless networks using an analytical model. Previous works have evaluated the performance of IEEE 802.11 proto-col assuming unicast communication, but there has not been an analysis considering broadcast communication. Analyzing performance of broad-cast communication is important because multicast communication is gaining attention in wireless networks with numerous potential applica-tions. Broadcast in IEEE 802.11 does not use virtual carrier sensing and thus only relies on physical carrier sensing to reduce collision. For this study, we define a successful broadcast transmission to be the case when all of the sender’s neighbors receive the broadcast frame correctly, and calculate the achievable throughput.
