Synchronization in networks of networks: the onset of coherent collective behavior in systems of interacting populations of heterogeneous oscillators
The onset of synchronization in networks of networks is investigated.
Specifically, we consider networks of interacting phase oscillators in which
the set of oscillators is composed of several distinct populations. The
oscillators in a given population are heterogeneous in that their natural
frequencies are drawn from a given distribution, and each population has its
own such distribution. The coupling among the oscillators is global, however,
we permit the coupling strengths between the members of different populations
to be separately specified. We determine the critical condition for the onset
of coherent collective behavior, and develop the illustrative case in which the
oscillator frequencies are drawn from a set of (possibly different)
Cauchy-Lorentz distributions. One motivation is drawn from neurobiology, in
which the collective dynamics of several interacting populations of oscillators
(such as excitatory and inhibitory neurons and glia) are of interest.Comment: The original was replaced with a version that has been accepted to

Exact Results for the Kuramoto Model with a Bimodal Frequency Distribution
We analyze a large system of globally coupled phase oscillators whose natural
frequencies are bimodally distributed. The dynamics of this system has been the
subject of long-standing interest. In 1984 Kuramoto proposed several
conjectures about its behavior; ten years later, Crawford obtained the first
analytical results by means of a local center manifold calculation.
Nevertheless, many questions have remained open, especially about the
possibility of global bifurcations. Here we derive the system's complete
stability diagram for the special case where the bimodal distribution consists
of two equally weighted Lorentzians. Using an ansatz recently discovered by Ott
and Antonsen, we show that in this case the infinite-dimensional problem
reduces exactly to a flow in four dimensions. Depending on the parameters and
initial conditions, the long-term dynamics evolves to one of three states:
incoherence, where all the oscillators are desynchronized; partial synchrony,
where a macroscopic group of phase-locked oscillators coexists with a sea of
desynchronized ones; and a standing wave state, where two counter-rotating
groups of phase-locked oscillators emerge. Analytical results are presented for
the bifurcation boundaries between these states. Similar results are also
obtained for the case in which the bimodal distribution is given by the sum of

Detection of Sugar-Lectin Interactions by Multivalent Dendritic Sugar Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) decorated with sugar
functionalized poly (propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer is a very sensitive
platform to quantitatively detect carbohydrate recognizing proteins, namely,
lectins. The changes in electrical conductivity of SWNT in field effect
transistor device due to carbohydrate - protein interactions form the basis of
present study. The mannose sugar attached PETIM dendrimers undergo charge -
transfer interactions with the SWNT. The changes in the conductance of the
dendritic sugar functionalized SWNT after addition of lectins in varying
concentrations were found to follow the Langmuir type isotherm, giving the
concanavalin A (Con A) - mannose affinity constant to be 8.5 x 106 M-1. The
increase in the device conductance observed after adding 10 nM of Con A is same
as after adding 20 \muM of a non - specific lectin peanut agglutinin, showing
the high specificity of the Con A - mannose interactions. The specificity of
sugar-lectin interactions was characterized further by observing significant
shifts in Raman modes of the SWNT.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Frequent use of paracetamol and risk of allergic disease among women in an Ethiopian population
Introduction
The hypothesis that paracetamol might increase the risk of asthma and other allergic diseases have gained support from a range of independent studies. However, in studies based in developed countries, the possibility that paracetamol and asthma are associated through aspirin avoidance is difficult to exclude.
Objectives
To explore this hypothesis among women in a developing country, where we have previously reported aspirin avoidance to be rare.
Methods
In 2005/6 a population based cohort of 1065 pregnant women was established in Butajira, Ethiopia and baseline demographic data collected. At 3 years post birth, an interview-based questionnaire administered to 945 (94%) of these women collected data on asthma, eczema, and hay fever in the past 12 month, frequency of paracetamol use and potential confounders. Allergen skin tests to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and cockroach were also performed. The independent effects of paracetamol use on allergic outcomes were determined using multiple logistic regression analysis.
Findings
The prevalence of asthma, eczema and hay fever was 1.7%, 0.9% and 3.8% respectively; of any one of these conditions 5.5%, and of allergen sensitization 7.8%. Paracetamol use in the past month was reported by 29%, and associations of borderline significance were seen for eczema (adjusted OR (95% CI) = 8.51 (1.68 to 43.19) for 1–3 tablets and 2.19 (0.36 to 13.38) for ≥4 tablets, compared to no tablets in the past month; overall p = 0.055) and for ‘any allergic condition’ (adjusted OR (95% CI) = 2.73 (1.22 to 6.11) for 1–3 tablets and 1.35 (0.67 to 2.70) for ≥4 tablets compared to 0 in the past month; overall p = 0.071).
Conclusions
This study provides further cross-sectional evidence that paracetamol use increases the risk of allergic disease
Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering, Direct Reaction, and Fusion Cross Sections for the 9Be + 208Pb System at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies
Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization
potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts,
simultaneous analyses are performed for elastic scattering, DR, and
fusion cross section data for the Be+Pb system at
near-Coulomb-barrier energies. Similar analyses are also performed
by only taking into account the elastic scattering and fusion data as was
previously done by the present authors, and the results are compared with those
of the full analysis including the DR cross section data as well. We find that
the analyses using only elastic scattering and fusion data can produce very
consistent and reliable predictions of cross sections particularly when the DR
cross section data are not complete. Discussions are also given on the results
obtained from similar analyses made earlier for the Be+Bi system.Comment: 5 figure
Dual omental flap in obliterating post-pneumonectomy bronchopleural fistulae
Background: Post-pneumonectomy bronchopleural fistulae is associated with high mortality and morbidity. The omental flap has been widely used to manage this condition either through laparoscopic or open surgery with varied degrees of success. We present a modification of the omental flap by using two flaps of the omentum in obliterating the bronchopleural fistulae.Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of dual omental flap in obliteration of postpneumonectomy bronchopleural fistulaeDesign: A prospective clinical study.Setting: The cardiothoracic unit at the Kenyatta National Hospital between January 2010 and December 2013 .Subjects: Five patients with post-pneumonectomy bronchopleural fistulae managed in a period of four years.Results: Pneumonectomy were due to cancer of the lungs in two patients and tuberculosis in three patients. All the patients had previously attempted repair with a pleural patch without success. Dual omental flap was utilised to repair the fistulae. All patients had successful repair of the fistula and no recurrence was noted at one year of follow up.Conclusion: Dual omental flap offers an alternative technique in obliterating postpneumonectomy fistula. The two flap technique allows for one flap to completely seal the fistula while the second flap provides an additional airtight closure over the first flap and hence prevents any leakages. This ensures higher success rate with few recurrences
Taming the Leibniz Rule on the Lattice
We study a product rule and a difference operator equipped with Leibniz rule
in a general framework of lattice field theory. It is shown that the difference
operator can be determined by the product rule and some initial data through
the Leibniz rule. This observation leads to a no-go theorem that it is
impossible to construct any difference operator and product rule on a lattice
with the properties of (i) translation invariance, (ii) locality and (iii)
Leibniz rule. We present a formalism to overcome the difficulty by an infinite
flavor extension or a matrix expression of a lattice field theory.Comment: 15 page
Febuxostat, an Inhibitor of Xanthine Oxidase, Suppresses Lipopolysaccharide-Induced MCP-1 Production via MAPK Phosphatase-1-Mediated Inactivation of JNK.
Excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation can trigger various pathological conditions such as inflammation, in which xanthine oxidase (XO) is one major enzymatic source of ROS. Although XO has been reported to play essential roles in inflammatory conditions, the molecular mechanisms underlying the involvement of XO in inflammatory pathways remain unclear. Febuxostat, a selective and potent inhibitor of XO, effectively inhibits not only the generation of uric acid but also the formation of ROS. In this study, therefore, we examined the effects of febuxostat on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammatory responses. Here we show that febuxostat suppresses LPS-induced MCP-1 production and mRNA expression via activating MAPK phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) which, in turn, leads to dephosphorylation and inactivation of JNK in macrophages. Moreover, these effects of febuxostat are mediated by inhibiting XO-mediated intracellular ROS production. Taken together, our data suggest that XO mediates LPS-induced phosphorylation of JNK through ROS production and MKP-1 inactivation, leading to MCP-1 production in macrophages. These studies may bring new insights into the novel role of XO in regulating inflammatory process through MAPK phosphatase, and demonstrate the potential use of XO inhibitor in modulating the inflammatory processes
Dose-dependent and combined effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist MK-801 and nitric oxide synthase inhibitor nitro-L-arginine on the survival of retinal ganglion cells in adult hamsters
This study investigated the effects of daily intraperitoneal injections of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist MK-801 and nitric oxide synthase inhibitor nitro-L-arginine (L-NA) on the survival of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) at 1 and 2 weeks after unilateral optic nerve transection in adult hamsters. The left optic nerves of all animals were transected intraorbitally 1 mm from the optic disc and RGCs were retrogradely labeled with Fluorogold before they received different daily dosages of single MK-801 or L-NA as well as daily combinational treatments of these two chemicals. All experimental and control animals survived for 1 or 2 weeks after optic nerve transection. Our results revealed that the mean numbers of surviving RGCs increased and then decreased when the dosage of MK-801 (1.0, 3.0 and 4.5 mg/kg) and L-NA (1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 mg/kg) increased at both 1 and 2 weeks survival time points. Daily combinational use of 1.0 mg/kg MK-801 and 1.5 mg/kg L-NA lead to a highest RGC number that was even higher than the sum of the RGC numbers in 1.0 mg/kg MK-801 and 1.5 mg/kg L-NA subgroups at 2 weeks. These findings indicated that both MK-801 and L-NA can protect axotomized RGCs in a dose-dependent manner and combinational treatment of these chemicals possesses a potentiative and protective effect.published_or_final_versio
