    Relating localized nanoparticle resonances to an associated antenna problem

    We conceptually unify the description of resonances existing at metallic nanoparticles and optical nanowire antennas. To this end the nanoantenna is treated as a Fabry-Perot resonator with arbitrary semi-nanoparticles forming the terminations. We show that the frequencies of the quasi-static dipolar resonances of these nanoparticles coincide with the frequency where the phase of the complex reflection coefficient of the fundamental propagating plasmon polariton mode at the wire termination amounts to π\pi. The lowest order Fabry-Perot resonance of the optical wire antenna occurs therefore even for a negligible wire length. This approach can be used either to easily calculate resonance frequencies for arbitrarily shaped nanoparticles or for tuning the resonance of nanoantennas by varying their termination.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Industrial Sponsor Perspective On Leveraging Capstone Design Projects To Enhance Their Business

    Capstone design projects have become commonplace among engineering and engineering technology programs.  These projects are valuable tools when assessing students, as they require students to work in teams, communicate effectively, and demonstrate technical competency.  The use of industrial sponsors enhances these projects by giving these projects more of a “real world” feel.  Most of the research into capstone design projects focuses on student learning as well as the overall design process.  However, very little research has been performed from the perspective of the industrial sponsor.  In this paper, an industrial sponsor who has sponsored several large-scale capstone design projects presents their perspective on working with students on these projects.  These projects serve as training systems for their existing employees and clients, and offer the sponsor the opportunity to evaluate the students as prospective future employees

    Differences in the Prevalence of Non-Communicable Disease between Slum Dwellers and the General Population in a Large Urban Area in Brazil.

    Residents of urban slums are at greater risk for disease than their non-slum dwelling urban counterparts. We sought to contrast the prevalences of selected non-communicable diseases (NCDs) between Brazilian adults living in a slum and the general population of the same city, by comparing the age and sex-standardized prevalences of selected NCDs from a 2010 survey in Pau da Lima, Salvador Brazil, with a 2010 national population-based telephone survey. NCD prevalences in both populations were similar for hypertension (23.6% (95% CI 20.9⁻26.4) and 22.9% (21.2⁻24.6), respectively) and for dyslipidemia (22.7% (19.8⁻25.5) and 21.5% (19.7⁻23.4)). Slum residents had higher prevalences of diabetes mellitus (10.1% (7.9⁻12.3)) and of overweight/obesity (46.5% (43.1⁻49.9)), compared to 5.2% (4.2⁻6.1) and 40.6% (38.5⁻42.8) of the general population in Salvador. Fourteen percent (14.5% (12.1⁻17.0)) of slum residents smoked cigarettes compared to 8.3% (7.1⁻9.5) of the general population in Salvador. The national telephone survey underestimated the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, overweight/obesity, and smoking in the slum population, likely in part due to differential sampling inside and outside of slums. Further research and targeted policies are needed to mitigate these inequalities, which could have significant economic and social impacts on slum residents and their communities

    Alterations on peripheral B cell subsets following an acute uncomplicated clinical malaria infection in children

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The effects of <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>on B-cell homeostasis have not been well characterized. This study investigated whether an episode of acute malaria in young children results in changes in the peripheral B cell phenotype.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using flow-cytofluorimetric analysis, the B cell phenotypes found in the peripheral blood of children aged 2–5 years were characterized during an episode of acute uncomplicated clinical malaria and four weeks post-recovery and in healthy age-matched controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was a significant decrease in CD19<sup>+ </sup>B lymphocytes during acute malaria. Characterization of the CD19<sup>+ </sup>B cell subsets in the peripheral blood based on expression of IgD and CD38 revealed a significant decrease in the numbers of naive 1 CD38<sup>-</sup>IgD<sup>+ </sup>B cells while there was an increase in CD38<sup>+</sup>IgD<sup>- </sup>memory 3 B cells during acute malaria. Further analysis of the peripheral B cell phenotype also identified an expansion of transitional CD10<sup>+</sup>CD19<sup>+ </sup>B cells in children following an episode of acute malaria with up to 25% of total CD19<sup>+ </sup>B cell pool residing in this subset.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Children experiencing an episode of acute uncomplicated clinical malaria experienced profound disturbances in B cell homeostasis.</p
