Enhancing social-emotional and character development for youths' success : a theoretical orientation and an evaluation using a cluster-randomized design
Interest in social-emotional and character development (SECD) programming has intensified in recent years. SECD-related programs often seek to enhance a variety of health-related outcomes by addressing multiple influences and embracing a comprehensive approach that includes youth, school personnel, families, and communities. Alongside a comprehensive approach arises the need for a comprehensive, integrative theory. To address this need, the first manuscript serves as 1) an empirical review of the SECD-related literature and 2) a theoretical orientation whereby the Theory of Triadic Influence provides a roadmap to guide the design and evaluation of SECD-related programs.
The second and third manuscripts examine one example of a SECD program, Positive Action (PA), utilizing data from the PA Hawai`i trial conducted from 2002-03 through 2005-06. The trial was a matched-pair, cluster-randomized, controlled trial that included 20 racially/ethnically diverse schools. Specifically, the second manuscript builds upon previous research and examines a mechanism whereby improvements in academic-related behaviors mediated the PA program effects on negative behaviors. Structural equation models, with a latent academic behavior mediator, indicated that students attending program schools reported significantly better academic behavior. Program effects on student-reported substance use, violence, and sexual activity were mediated by greater academic behavior. Teacher reports corroborated these results.
The third manuscript explores the impact of the PA program on school-level indicators of school quality, thereby examining the ability of a SECD program to create contextual, whole-school change. Teacher, parent, and student archival school-level data were analyzed to examine indicators of school quality such as student safety and well-being, involvement, and satisfaction, as well as overall school quality. Program schools demonstrated a significant improvement in individual indicators and overall school quality compared to control schools. Therefore, consistent with theory, a SECD program demonstrated the ability to enhance school quality and facilitate whole-school change
Paediatric trauma on the Last Frontier: an 11-year review of injury mechanisms, high-risk injury patterns and outcomes in Alaskan children
Background: Paediatric trauma system development in Alaska is complicated by a vast geographic coverage area, wide regional variations in environment and culture, and a lack of available published data. Objective: To provide a detailed description of paediatric trauma mechanisms, high-risk injury patterns and outcomes in Alaska. Design: This retrospective study included all children aged 17 years or younger in the State of Alaska Trauma Registry database admitted with traumatic injury between 2001 and 2011. Each injury record was reviewed individually and assigned a mechanism based on Centers for Disease Control E-codes. Geographic definitions were based on existing Emergency Medical Services regions. Mechanisms were compared by geographic region, patient demographics, injury characteristics and outcome. Subgroup analysis of fatal injuries was performed to identify causes of death. Results: Of 5,547 patients meeting inclusion criteria, the most common mechanisms of injury were falls (39%), motor vehicle collisions (10%) and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accidents (9%). The overall case fatality rate was 2%. Mechanisms with the greatest risk of death were gunshot wounds (21%), pedestrians struck by motorized vehicles (9%) and motor vehicle collisions (5%). These 3 mechanisms accounted for 15% of injuries but 60% of deaths in the overall cohort. Injury patterns involving combined central nervous system (CNS) and torso injuries were unusual but especially lethal, occurring in 3% of patients but carrying a case fatality rate of 18%. Although the distribution of mechanisms was generally similar for each geographic region, ATV and snowmobile injuries were significantly more common in remote areas (23% remote vs. 7% non-remote, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Mechanisms of paediatric trauma in Alaska have widely varying impacts on outcome and show some variation by region. Highest-risk mechanisms include gunshot wounds and motorized vehicle-related accidents. Prevention efforts should give special attention to CNS injury prevention, ATV and snowmobile safety in remote areas, and optimization of management of multisystem trauma. Further studies should investigate predictors of outcome in greater detail
Direct and mediated effects of a social-emotional and character development program on adolescent substance use
Mitigating and preventing substance use among adolescents requires approaches that
address the multitude of factors that influence this behavior. Such approaches must be
tested, not only for evidence of empirical effectiveness, but also to determine the
mechanisms by which they are successful. The aims of the present study were twofold:
1) To determine the effectiveness of a school-based social-emotional and character
development (SECD) program, Positive Action (PA), in reducing substance use (SU)
among a sample of U.S. youth living in a low-income, urban environment, and 2) to test
one mechanism by which the program achieves its success. We used longitudinal
mediation analysis to test the hypotheses that: 1) students attending PA intervention
schools engage in significantly less SU than students attending control schools, 2)
students attending PA intervention schools show significantly better change in SECD
than students attending control schools, and 3) the effect of the PA intervention on SU is
mediated by the change in SECD. Analyses revealed program effects on both SECD and
SU, a relationship between SECD and SU, and the effects of PA on SU were completely
mediated by changes in SECD. Future research directions and implications for schoolbased social-emotional and character development efforts and substance use prevention are addressed.peer-reviewe
Spectroscopy of neutron-unbound F
The ground state of F has been observed as an unbound resonance
keV above the ground state of F. Comparison of this
result with USDA/USDB shell model predictions leads to the conclusion that the
F ground state is primarily dominated by -shell configurations. Here
we present a detailed report on the experiment in which the ground state
resonance of F was first observed. Additionally, we report the first
observation of a neutron-unbound excited state in F at an excitation

Observational Results of a Multi-Telescope Campaign in Search of Interstellar Urea [(NH)CO]
In this paper, we present the results of an observational search for gas
phase urea [(NH)CO] observed towards the Sgr B2(N-LMH) region. We show
data covering urea transitions from 100 GHz to 250 GHz from five
different observational facilities: BIMA, CARMA, the NRAO 12 m telescope, the
IRAM 30 m telescope, and SEST. The results show that the features ascribed to
urea can be reproduced across the entire observed bandwidth and all facilities
by best fit column density, temperature, and source size parameters which vary
by less than a factor of 2 between observations merely by adjusting for
telescope-specific parameters. Interferometric observations show that the
emission arising from these transitions is cospatial and compact, consistent
with the derived source sizes and emission from a single species. Despite this
evidence, the spectral complexity, both of (NH)CO and of Sgr B2(N),
makes the definitive identification of this molecule challenging. We present
observational spectra, laboratory data, and models, and discuss our results in

Further Insights into the Reaction Be14(CH2,X)10He
A previously published measurement of the reaction of a 59 MeV/nucleon 14Be beam on a deuterated polyethylene target was further analyzed to search for 12He as well as initial state effects in the population of the 10He ground state. No evidence for either was found. A lower limit of about 1 MeV was determined for a possible resonance in 12He. In addition, the three-body decay energy spectrum of 10He could not be described by a reaction mechanism calculation based on the halo structure of the initial 14Be assuming a direct α-particle removal reaction
First observation of Li ground state
The ground state of neutron-rich unbound Li was observed for the first
time in a one-proton removal reaction from Be at a beam energy of 53.6
MeV/u. The Li ground state was reconstructed from Li and two
neutrons giving a resonance energy of 120 keV. All events
involving single and double neutron interactions in the Modular Neutron Array
(MoNA) were analyzed, simulated, and fitted self-consistently. The three-body
(Li+) correlations within Jacobi coordinates showed strong
dineutron characteristics. The decay energy spectrum of the intermediate
Li system (Li+) was described with an s-wave scattering length
of greater than -4 fm, which is a smaller absolute value than reported in a

Structure and Decay Correlations of Two-Neutron Systems Beyond the Dripline
The two-neutron unbound systems of 16Be, 13Li, 10He, and 26O have been measured using the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) and 4 Tm Sweeper magnet setup. The correlations of the 3-body decay for the 16Be and 13Li were extracted and demonstrated a strong correlated enhancement between the two neutrons. The measurement of the 10He ground state resonance from a 14Be(−2p2n) reaction provided insight into previous predictions that wavefunction of the entrance channel, projectile, can influence the observed decay energy spectrum for the unbound system. Lastly, the decay-in-target (DiT) technique was utilized to extract the lifetime of the 26O ground state. The measured lifetime of 4.5+1.1 −1.5 (stat.)±3(sys.) ps provides the first indication of two-neutron radioactivity
