    Missiological Education by Extension: A Case Study of the Course, “Foundations of the World Christian Movement”

    This article is a case study of a simple online course created jointly by a mission agency and small university. It demonstrates how open source course management technology has been used to create a true sense of community among students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and locations. The content of the course was delivered through a blending of open source technology and self-directed adult learning facilitated through online dialog, which in turned engendered multi-cultural, respectful virtual community. Information is shared to enable others to obtain low-cost technological help for setting up other individual courses in Moodle

    A Preliminary Investigation into the Impact of a First-Year Stress Management Seminar

    Research reveals that high stress levels in undergraduate students may negatively impact their emotional and physical well-being. Short-term approaches to introducing stress management on college campuses have been explored. The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine whether a first-year stress management seminar course helped students reduce their stress a year after completing the course, identify which stress management skills students preferred, and assess the effectiveness of specific teaching techniques on student learning. Participants included students enrolled in two sections of a first-year stress management course. A survey was administered in 4 waves during the 2020 to 2021 academic year. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Positive trends emerged regarding students’ abilities to cope with stress. They preferred an active approach to learning and used cognitive techniques, support, and humor to manage stressors. Furthermore, this study also provides instructors, from various disciplines, with stress management techniques they can incorporate into their classes and share with their students

    Autonomous support for microorganism research in space

    A preliminary design for performing on orbit, autonomous research on microorganisms and cultured cells/tissues is presented. An understanding of gravity and its effects on cells is crucial for space exploration as well as for terrestrial applications. The payload is designed to be compatible with the Commercial Experiment Transporter (COMET) launch vehicle, an orbiter middeck locker interface, and with Space Station Freedom. Uplink/downlink capabilities and sample return through controlled reentry are available for all carriers. Autonomous testing activities are preprogrammed with in-flight reprogrammability. Sensors for monitoring temperature, pH, light, gravity levels, vibrations, and radiation are provided for environmental regulation and experimental data collection. Additional experimental data acquisition includes optical density measurement, microscopy, video, and film photography. On-board full data storage capabilities are provided. A fluid transfer mechanism is utilized for inoculation, sampling, and nutrient replenishment of experiment cultures. In addition to payload design, representative experiments were developed to ensure scientific objectives remained compatible with hardware capabilities. The project is defined to provide biological data pertinent to extended duration crewed space flight including crew health issues and development of a Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS). In addition, opportunities are opened for investigations leading to commercial applications of space, such as pharmaceutical development, modeling of terrestrial diseases, and material processing

    Fifteen species of the labrid fish genus Halichoeres occur in the western Indian Ocean (west of the southern tip of India): hortulanus (centiquadrus of many authors), scapularis, (ziczac is a synonym), marginatus (lamarii, ianthinus and virescens are synonyms), dussumieri (nigrescens of many authors; javanicus, dubius and dianthus are synonyms), pardaleocephalus (first western Indian Ocean record), hoevenii (vrolikii is a synonym), nebulosus (previously confused with margaritaceus which does not occur in the Indian Ocean), zeylonicus (bimaculatus of most authors is a synonym), lapillus, and six new species (stigmaticus, pelicieri, cosmetus, iridis, trispilus, and leucoxanthus). H. stigmaticus from the Persian Gulf is distinctive in having 28 lateral-line scales, 6 or 7 suborbital pores, and a U-shaped black mark on side above pectoral fin tips in males; H. pelicieri from Mauritius is a close relative of H. zeylonicus, differing chiefly in the colour of males (pelicieri with a broad blackish zone in dorsal fin and no large black spot on upper side); H. cosmetus, wide-ranging in the western Indian Ocean and a close relative of H. ornatissimus of the Pacific and Cocos-Keeling Islands, is alternately striped with bluish gray to green and salmon pink or yellow; H. iridis, also a species of the western Indian Ocean, has a dark brown body except for a red band along the back and an orange-yellow head with green bands; H. trispilus, known only from Mauritius and the Maldives, is pale pink with a diagonal row of three dark brown spots on upper caudal base and usually three black dots on back; H. leucoxanthus, known only from the Maldives, southwest Thailand and Java, is yellow dorsally and abruptly white on ventral half of body with a dark spot behind the eye, a black spot on upper caudal base, and three others in the dorsal fin.Rhodes University Libraries (Digitisation
