A research to reduce interior noise in general aviation airplanes. General aviation interior noise study
The construction, calibration, and properties of a facility for measuring sound transmission through aircraft type panels are described along with the theoretical and empirical methods used. Topics discussed include typical noise source, sound transmission path, and acoustic cabin properties and their effect on interior noise. Experimental results show an average sound transmission loss in the mass controlled frequency region comparable to theoretical predictions. The results also verify that transmission losses in the stiffness controlled region directly depend on the fundamental frequency of the panel. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that increases in this frequency, and consequently in transmission loss, can be achieved by applying pressure differentials across the specimen
A research program to reduce interior noise in general aviation airplanes. Design of an acoustic panel test facility
The design, construction, and costs of a test facility for determining the sound transmission loss characteristics of various panels and panel treatments are described. The pressurization system and electronic equipment used in experimental testing are discussed as well as the reliability of the facility and the data gathered. Tests results are compared to pertinent acoustical theories for panel behavior and minor anomalies in the data are examined. A method for predicting panel behavior in the stiffness region is also presented
Identification of the Beutler-Fano formula in eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance
Eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance for a system of one
discrete state and two continua are shown to be functionals of the Beutler-
Fano formulas using appropriate dimensionless energy units and line profile
indices. Parameters responsible for the avoided crossing of eigenphase shifts
and eigentime delays are identified. Similarly, parameters responsible for the
eigentime delays due to a frame change are identified. With the help of new
parameters, an analogy with the spin model is pursued for the S matrix and time
delay matrix. The time delay matrix is shown to comprise three terms, one due
to resonance, one due to a avoided crossing interaction, and one due to a frame
change. It is found that the squared sum of time delays due to the avoided

Parallax and Distance Estimates for Fourteen Cataclysmic Variable Stars
I used the 2.4 m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to
measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques
are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below
1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A
Bayesian method which combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and
absolute magnitude constraints is developed and used to derive distance
estimates and confidence intervals. The most precise distance derived here is
for WZ Sge, for which I find 43.3 (+1.6, -1.5) pc. Six Luyten Half-Second stars
with previous precise parallax measurements were re-measured to test the

Far infrared study of the two dimensional dimer spin system SrCu_2(BO_3)_2
Using far-infrared spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 12T we have studied
a two-dimensional dimer spin gap system SrCu_2(BO_3)_2. We found several
infrared active modes in the dimerized state (below 10K) in the frequency range
from 3 to 100cm^-1. The measured splitting from the ground state to the excited
triplet M_S=0 sublevel is Delta_1=24.2cm^-1 and the other two triplet state
sublevels in zero magnetic field are 1.4cm^-1 below and above the M_S=0
sublevel. Another multiplet is at Delta_2=37.6cm^-1 from the ground state. A
strong electric dipole active transition polarized in the (ab)-plane is

Spectroscopy of Seven Cataclysmic Variables with Periods Above Five Hours
We present spectroscopy of seven cataclysmic variable stars with orbital
periods P(orb) greater than 5 hours, all but one of which are known to be dwarf
novae. Using radial velocity measurements we improve on previous orbital period
determinations, or derive periods for the first time. The stars and their

For each of the systems we detect the spectrum of the secondary star,
estimate its spectral type, and derive a distance based on the surface
brightness and Roche lobe constraints. In five systems we also measure the
radial velocity curve of the secondary star, estimate orbital inclinations, and
where possible estimate distances based on the MV(max) vs.P(orb) relation found
by Warner. In concordance with previous studies, we find that all the secondary
stars have, to varying degrees, cooler spectral types than would be expected if

Astrophysical Fluids of Novae: High Resolution Pre-decay X-ray spectrum of V4743 Sagittarii
Eight X-ray observations of V4743 Sgr (2002), observed with Chandra and
XMM-Newton are presented. The nova turned off some time between days 301.9 and
371, and the X-ray flux subsequently decreased from day 301.9 to 526 following
an exponential decline time scale of days. We use the absorption
lines present in the SSS spectrum for diagnostic purposes, and characterize the
physics and the dynamics of the expanding atmosphere during the explosion of
the nova. The information extracted from this first stage is then used as input
for computing full photoionization models of the ejecta in V4743 Sgr. The SSS
spectrum is modeled with a simple black-body and multiplicative Gaussian lines,
which provides us of a general kinematical picture of the system, before it
decays to its faint phase (Ness et al. 2003). In the grating spectra taken
between days 180.4 and 370, we can resolve the line profiles of absorption
lines arising from H-like and He-like C, N, and O, including transitions
involving higher principal quantum numbers. Except for a few interstellar
lines, all lines are significantly blue-shifted, yielding velocities between
1000 and 6000 km/s which implies an ongoing mass loss. It is shown that
significant expansion and mass loss occur during this phase of the explosion,
at a rate . Our measurements show that the efficiency of the amount of
energy used for the motion of the ejecta, defined as the ratio between the
kinetic luminosity and the radiated luminosity , is

Criteria of efficiency for conformal prediction
We study optimal conformity measures for various criteria of efficiency of
classification in an idealised setting. This leads to an important class of
criteria of efficiency that we call probabilistic; it turns out that the most
standard criteria of efficiency used in literature on conformal prediction are
not probabilistic unless the problem of classification is binary. We consider
both unconditional and label-conditional conformal prediction.Comment: 31 page
The effect of uniaxial pressure on the magnetic anomalies of the heavy-fermion metamagnet CeRu2Si2
The effect of uniaxial pressure (P_u) on the magnetic susceptibility (X),
magnetization (M), and magnetoresistance (MR) of the heavy-fermion metamagnet
CeRu2Si2 has been investigated. For the magnetic field along the tetragonal c
axis, it is found that characteristic physical quantities, i.e., the
temperature of the susceptibility maximum (T_max), the pagamagnetic Weiss
temperature (Q_p), 1/X at 2 K, and the magnetic field of the metamagnetic
anomaly (H_M), scale approximately linearly with P_u, indicating that all the
quantities are related to the same energy scale, probably of the Kondo
temperature. The increase (decrease) of the quantities for P_u || c axis (P_u
|| a axis) can be attributed to a decrease (increase) in the nearest Ce-Ru
distance. Consistently in MR and X, we observed a sign that the anisotropic
nature of the hybridization, which is believed to play an important role in the
metamagnetic anomaly, can be controlled by applying the uniaxial pressure.
