Liberal Studies at Longwood College: Preparing Teachers for Virginia\u27s Future
The Liberal Studies Major provides future teachers studying at Longwood College with an excellent opportunity to prepare for all aspects of teaching in elementary school classrooms. In the area of mathematics and science, the Liberal Studies Major contains a total of 24 hours of mathematics and science, and prepares future K-6 classroom teachers to teach all components of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) in these disciplines. Longwood College is currently studying how requirements can be modiïŹed within the Liberal Studies Program to make it possible for students to complete the discipline speciïŹc course work that will be necessary for middle school endorsement
Twin prime correlations from the pair correlation of Riemann zeros
We establish, via a formal/heuristic Fourier inversion calculation, that the
Hardy-Littlewood twin prime conjecture is equivalent to an asymptotic formula
for the two-point correlation function of Riemann zeros at a height on the
critical line. Previously it was known that the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture
implies the pair correlation formula, and we show that the reverse implication
also holds. A smooth form of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture is obtained by
inverting the limit of the two-point correlation
function and the precise form of the conjecture is found by including
asymptotically lower order terms in the two-point correlation function formula.Comment: 11 page

Urbanheart surgery - a logic of design alternatives
In 1972 Sir Leslie Martin in his essay “The Grid as Generator”, advocated “a strong theoretical basis for [planning and] urban design” (Carolin P, 2000, p4) by methodically shifting design parameters regarding the way “in which buildings [could be] placed on the land” Martin was able to demonstrate how the generation of alternatives could “allow wider scope for decisions and objectives” to be considered and discussed (Carmona M, & Tiesdell S 2007, p81). Operating within a conventional design studio yet drawing of Sir Leslie Martin’s logic, ie developing an informed understanding of a problem by identifying a finite world of design ‘alternatives’, the following paper outlines a studio based program at the School of Architecture and Building, Deakin University, referred to as the ‘UrbanHeart Surgery’. While most atelier-based courses operate largely on an ad-hoc basis where students often work within self imposed competitive isolation, Urbanheart adopts a more open yet structured approach where students work in design collaboratives to generate a matrix of alternative design scenarios. The program actively integrates postgraduate students from Architecture, Urban Design and Planning into a design research culture and allows them to engage in critical discourse by working on strategic design projects in three areas significant to the future development of the state of Victoria: Metropolitan Urbanism, Urbanism on the Periphery and Regional Urbanism
A viscoelastic traction layer model of mucociliary flow
A new mathematical model of the transport of mucus and periciliary liquid (PCL) in the airways by cilia is presented. Mucus is represented by a linearly viscoelastic fluid, the mat of cilia is modelled as an âactive porous medium.â The propulsive effect of the cilia is modelled by a time-dependent force acting in a shear-thinned âtraction layerâ between the mucus and the PCL. The effects of surface and interface tension are modelled by constraining the mucus free surface and mucusâPCL interface to be flat. It is assumed that the epithelium is impermeable to fluid. Using Fourier series, the system is converted into ODEs and solved numerically. We calculate values for mean mucus speed close to those observed by Matsui et~al. [{J. Clin. Invest.}, 102(6):1125â1131, 1998], (~40 ÎŒmsâ1). We obtain more detail regarding the dynamics of the flow and the nonlinear relationships between physical parameters in healthy and diseased states than in previously published models. Pressure gradients in the PCL caused by interface and surface tension are vital to ensuring efficient transport of mucus, and the role of the mucusâPCL interface appears to be to support such pressure gradients, ensuring efficient transport. Mean transport of PCL is found to be very small, consistent with previous analyses, providing insight into theories regarding the normal tonicity of PCL
Calculation of material properties and ray tracing in transformation media
Complex and interesting electromagnetic behavior can be found in spaces with
non-flat topology. When considering the properties of an electromagnetic medium
under an arbitrary coordinate transformation an alternative interpretation
presents itself. The transformed material property tensors may be interpreted
as a different set of material properties in a flat, Cartesian space. We
describe the calculation of these material properties for coordinate
transformations that describe spaces with spherical or cylindrical holes in
them. The resulting material properties can then implement invisibility cloaks
in flat space. We also describe a method for performing geometric ray tracing
in these materials which are both inhomogeneous and anisotropic in their
electric permittivity and magnetic permeability
