What are the consequences of global banking for the international transmission of shocks? A quantitative analysis

The global financial crisis of 2008 was followed by a wave of regulatory reforms that affected large banks, especially those with a global presence. These reforms were reactive to the crisis. In this paper we propose a structural model of global banking that can be used proactively to perform counterfactual analysis on the effects of alternative regulatory policies. The structure of the model mimics the US regulatory framework and highlights the organizational choices that banks face when entering a foreign market: branching versus subsidiarization. When calibrated to match moments from a sample of European banks, the model is able to replicate the response of the US banking sector to the European sovereign debt crisis. Our counterfactual analysis suggests that pervasive subsidiarization, higher capital requirements, or ad hoc monetary policy interventions would have mitigated the effects of the crisis on US lending.https://www.nber.org/papers/w25203Published versio

Factors Affecting Residential Property Development Patterns

The pattern of residential development within the context of metropolitan growth and development has been the subject of an extensive literature. Among the streams of literature have been monocentric and policentric models, rent gradients and population density, and spatial mismatch and jobs/housing balance. Less explored have been the factors determining the specific location of development from within a larger set of suitable locations. This paper uses a disaggregated data set, county property appraiser data, to track the number of new single-family housing units built in each section (square mile) of Alachua County, Florida by the year built over a twenty- year period. The paper explores the role of transportation, large-scale development, employment nodes, existing patterns of development, and regulation on the spatial pattern of development. As discussions turn to smart growth, compact development, and the alleviation of sprawl, it is important to understand the forces that contribute to observed development patterns.

Performance of a single fuel-vaporizing combustor with six injectors adapted for gaseous hydrogen

The combustor was operated over a range of inlet-air pressures from 5.3 to 24.0 inches of mercury absolute and inlet-air reference velocities from 60 to 100 feet per second. The combustion efficiencies obtained with the six configurations varied from about 65 to 95 percent for a combustor temperature-rise range of 200 degrees to 1400 degrees F. At a temperature rise of 1200 degrees F (near-rated engine conditions), the spread in efficiencies of the six configurations was about 5 percent. Efficiencies in the range of 65 to 85 percent were obtained at operating conditions beyond the burning range of conventional jet fuels. A fuel-injector configuration that fed only gaseous hydrogen fuel into the standard liquid-fuel-vaporizing tubes generally gave the highest efficiencies. This configuration minimizes the possibility of combustion in the fuel-vaporizing tubes and could be easily adapted to the full-scale engine combustor
