Induced decay of the neutral vaccum in overcritical fields occurring in heavy-ion collisions
In critical or nearly critical heavy-ion collisions, induced as well as spontaneous energyless e-e+ pair creation result in the decay of the neutral vacuum. Induced transitions from the negative-energy continuum into a vacant molecular 1s level can occur even in the absence of diving and produce a substantial enhancement and broadening of the previously considered spontaneous positron spectrum. Effect of Tryptophan Analogs on Derepression of the \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e Tryptophan Operon by Indole-3-Propionic Acid
The abilities of 14 tryptophan analogs to repress the tryptophan (trp) operon have been studied in Escherichia coli cells derepressed by incubation with 0.25 mM indole-3-propionic acid (IPA). trp operon expression was monitored by measuring the specific activities of anthranilate synthase (EC 4.1.3.27) and the tryptophan synthase (EC 4.2.1.20) β subunit. Analogs characterized by modification or removal of the α-amino group or the α-carboxyl group did not repress the trp operon. The only analogs among this group that appeared to interact with the trp aporepressor were IPA, which derepressed the trp operon, and d-tryptophan. Analogs with modifications of the indole ring repressed the trp operon to various degrees. 7-Methyl-tryptophan inhibited anthranilate synthase activity and consequently derepressed the trp operon. Additionally, 7-methyltryptophan prevented IPA-mediated derepression but, unlike tryptophan, did so in a non-coordinate manner, with the later enzymes of the operon being relatively more repressed than the early enzymes. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on IPA-mediated derepression was likely not due to the interaction of IPA with the allosteric site of anthranilate synthase, even though feedback-resistant mutants of anthranilate synthase were partially resistant to derepression by IPA. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on derepression by IPA was probably due to the effect of the analog-aporepressor complex on trp operon expression
The stochastic behavior of a molecular switching circuit with feedback
Background: Using a statistical physics approach, we study the stochastic
switching behavior of a model circuit of multisite phosphorylation and
dephosphorylation with feedback. The circuit consists of a kinase and
phosphatase acting on multiple sites of a substrate that, contingent on its
modification state, catalyzes its own phosphorylation and, in a symmetric
scenario, dephosphorylation. The symmetric case is viewed as a cartoon of
conflicting feedback that could result from antagonistic pathways impinging on
the state of a shared component.
Results: Multisite phosphorylation is sufficient for bistable behavior under
feedback even when catalysis is linear in substrate concentration, which is the
case we consider. We compute the phase diagram, fluctuation spectrum and
large-deviation properties related to switch memory within a statistical
mechanics framework. Bistability occurs as either a first-order or second-order
non-equilibrium phase transition, depending on the network symmetries and the
ratio of phosphatase to kinase numbers. In the second-order case, the circuit
never leaves the bistable regime upon increasing the number of substrate
molecules at constant kinase to phosphatase ratio.
Conclusions: The number of substrate molecules is a key parameter controlling
both the onset of the bistable regime, fluctuation intensity, and the residence
time in a switched state. The relevance of the concept of memory depends on the
degree of switch symmetry, as memory presupposes information to be remembered,
which is highest for equal residence times in the switched states.

Remote Detection of Disturbance from Motorized Vehicle Use in Appalachian Wetlands
Wetland disturbance from motorized vehicle use is a growing concern across the Appalachian coalfields of southwestern Virginia and portions of adjacent states, particularly as both extractive industries and outdoor recreation development expand in regional communities. However, few attempts have been made in this region or elsewhere to adapt approaches that can assist researchers and land managers in remotely identifying and monitoring wetland habitats disturbed by motorized vehicle use. A comparative analysis of wetlands impacted and unimpacted by off-road vehicle activity at a public recreation area in Tazewell County, Virginia was conducted to determine if and how a common, satellite-derived index of vegetation health, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), can remotely detect wetland disturbance. NDVI values were consistently lower in wetlands impacted by several years of off-road vehicle use when compared to adjacent, unimpacted sites, with statistically-significant NDVI coldspots growing in size in impacted wetlands across the same time period. While considerations exist related to the resolution of data sources and the identification of specific modes of disturbance, NDVI and associated spatial analysis tools may provide a simple and cost-effective way for researchers and land managers to remotely monitor rates of wetland disturbance across mountainous portions of the eastern United States
