    Servitization and operations management : a service-dominant logic approach

    Managing organisational performance in sectors such as equipment provision has become increasingly complex as competition has heightened and firms have felt pressure to add value through the provision of services (Baines et al, 2007; Howard and Caldwell, 2011; Neely et al., 2011). This provision is commonly referred to as the servitization of manufacturing (Vandermerwe & Rada, 1988). By extending the traditional offering of equipment to include service activities however, underlying operational delivery systems and processes have become more complex to manage and co-ordinate. No longer are firms simply making and shipping products; they are now engaged in a more complex world of design and delivery (Neely et al., 2011). This study aims to explore servitization from a value perspective through the lens of Service-Dominant (S-D) logic, and to propose its implications for operations management

    Normalizers of Irreducible Subfactors

    We consider normalizers of an irreducible inclusion N⊆MN\subseteq M of II1\mathrm{II}_1 factors. In the infinite index setting an inclusion uNu∗⊆NuNu^*\subseteq N can be strict, forcing us to also investigate the semigroup of one-sided normalizers. We relate these normalizers of NN in MM to projections in the basic construction and show that every trace one projection in the relative commutant Nâ€Č∩N'\cap is of the form u∗eNuu^*e_Nu for some unitary u∈Mu\in M with uNu∗⊆NuNu^*\subseteq N. This enables us to identify the normalizers and the algebras they generate in several situations. In particular each normalizer of a tensor product of irreducible subfactors is a tensor product of normalizers modulo a unitary. We also examine normalizers of irreducible subfactors arising from subgroup--group inclusions H⊆GH\subseteq G. Here the normalizers are the normalizing group elements modulo a unitary from L(H)L(H). We are also able to identify the finite trace L(H)L(H)-bimodules in ℓ2(G)\ell^2(G) as double cosets which are also finite unions of left cosets.Comment: 33 Page

The HAWAII-2RG in the MMT and Magellan Infrared Spectrograph shows significant persistence when first powered up.     Phase-resolved Crab Studies with a Cryogenic TES Spectrophotometer

    We are developing time- and energy-resolved near-IR/optical/UV photon detectors based on sharp superconducting-normal transition edges in thin films. We report observations of the Crab pulsar made during prototype testing at the McDonald 2.7m telescope with a fiber-coupled transition-edge sensor (TES) system. These data show substantial (d[alpha]~0.3), rapid variations in the spectral index through the pulse profile, with a strong phase-varying IR break across our energy band. These variations correlate with X-ray spectral variations, but no single synchrotron population can account for the full Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). We also describe test spectrophotopolarimetry observations probing the energy dependence of the polarization sweep; this may provide a new key to understanding the radiating particle population.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures -- to appear in ApJ V56

    High temperature liquid chromatography of steroids on a bonded hybrid column

    A hybrid stationary phase, XTerra MS C18, has been evaluated for the high temperature reversed phase liquid chromatography of selected hydrophobic steroids. The effects on the retention and efficiency at temperatures up to 130 °C and eluent compositions from methanol-water mixtures to superheated water were studied. The thermodynamic data of the separations were determined. It was shown that increasing the temperature enabled the percentage of methanol to be reduced. High mobile phase flow rates could be used but for these non-polar analytes the retention times with superheated water as the eluent were still high
