The influence of genetics and the environment on human personalities, relationships and experiences
It\u27s no mystery that our genetic make-up plays an integral part in the outcome of our lives, but to what extent exactly are our personalities, relationships and experiences pre-determined by this genetic code? There are two forces that contribute to the outcome of these aspects of our lives. Genetics and Environment. The significance of the environment, i.e., our upbringing, lifestyle and the world around us is often emphasized by psychologists as the more dominant force, however our genes are just as, if not more, influential on our lives. My choreographic process is directly in relation to the group of artists involved. It\u27s impossible for me to solely have one successful process unless consistently working with the same group of dancers/artists and even then each time will be different with different problems. My research has intentionally consisted of three quite different processes, working with Link Dance Company, First year WAAPA dance students and, the most challenging of all, choreographing on myself and one other dancer for a public performance. I created three pieces throughout the year. The first entitled, \u27Upshot\u27 where I worked with the first year Bachelor of Arts (Dance) students, the second, \u27Of A Kind\u27 with Link Dance Company for the Prague Dance Festival and lastly, \u27No Right Angles\u27, where I worked with an independent dancer, Bernadette Lewis

Chemical elements in the environment: Multi-element geochemical datasets from continental- to national-scale surveys on four continents
During the last 10â20 years, Geological Surveys around the world have undertaken a major effort towards delivering fully harmonised and tightly quality controlled low-density multi-element soil geochemical maps and datasets of vast regions including up to whole continents. Concentrations of between 45 and 60 elements commonly have been determined in a variety of different regolith types (e.g., sediment, soil). The multi-element datasets are published as complete geochemical atlases and made available to the general public. Several other geochemical datasets covering smaller areas, but generally at a higher spatial density, are also available. These datasets may, however, not be found by superficial internet-based searches because the elements are not mentioned individually either in the title or in the keyword lists of the original references. This publication attempts to increase the visibility and discoverability of these fundamental background datasets covering large areas up to whole continents.We thank the governments and

Schistosomiasis Morbidity Hotspots: Roles of the Human Host, the Parasite and Their Interface in the Development of Severe Morbidity.
Schistosomiasis is the second most important human parasitic disease in terms of socioeconomic impact, causing great morbidity and mortality, predominantly across the African continent. For intestinal schistosomiasis, severe morbidity manifests as periportal fibrosis (PPF) in which large tracts of macro-fibrosis of the liver, visible by ultrasound, can occlude the main portal vein leading to portal hypertension (PHT), sequelae such as ascites and collateral vasculature, and ultimately fatalities. For urogenital schistosomiasis, severe morbidity manifests as pathology throughout the urinary system and genitals, and is a definitive cause of squamous cell bladder carcinoma. Preventative chemotherapy (PC) programmes, delivered through mass drug administration (MDA) of praziquantel (PZQ), have been at the forefront of schistosomiasis control programmes in sub-Saharan Africa since their commencement in Uganda in 2003. However, despite many successes, 'biological hotspots' (as distinct from 'operational hotspots') of both persistent high transmission and morbidity remain. In some areas, this failure to gain control of schistosomiasis has devastating consequences, with not only persistently high infection intensities, but both "subtle" and severe morbidity remaining prevalent. These hotspots highlight the requirement to revisit research into severe morbidity and its mechanisms, a topic that has been out of favor during times of PC implementation. Indeed, the focality and spatially-structured epidemiology of schistosomiasis, its transmission persistence and the morbidity induced, has long suggested that gene-environmental-interactions playing out at the host-parasite interface are crucial. Here we review evidence of potential unique parasite factors, host factors, and their gene-environmental interactions in terms of explaining differential morbidity profiles in the human host. We then take the situation of schistosomiasis mansoni within the Albertine region of Uganda as a case study in terms of elucidating the factors behind the severe morbidity observed and the avenues and directions for future research currently underway within a new research and clinical trial programme (FibroScHot)

The Courage to SoTL
Using Parker Palmerâs The Courage to Teach, and in particular the notion of the undivided life, to guide reflections through the process of collaborative autoethnography, we reflect on our lived experiences with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). The central question being: How does Palmerâs idea of the undivided life enable SoTL scholars to explore notions of identity and integrity that are intertwined with our academic practice? Ultimately, we found that Palmerâs insights provoked us to think deeply about our identities, and while perhaps we did not always see ourselves on the paths he illuminates, his work, and our collaborative ethnographic process, helped us to illuminate our own paths. More specifically, we share five themes arising from our collaborative autoethnography related to the importance of context and positionality, defining a SoTL scholar, the power to diminish, the importance of relationships and community, and collaborative autoethnography as method and process. Our stories highlight the need for us to see our community as complex, messy, and deeply human, and we remind readers of the need to think about the ethics of all methods and the power in our everyday practice to include or exclude
Intra- and Interspecies Spread of a Novel Conjugative Multidrug Resistance IncC Plasmid Coharboring blaOXA-181 and armA in a Cystic Fibrosis Patient.
A novel multidrug resistance conjugative 177,859-bp IncC plasmid pJEF1-OXA-181 coharboring the carbapenemase-coding blaOXA181 and the aminoglycoside resistance 16S rRNA methyltransferase-coding armA genes was detected in two unrelated Escherichia coli gut isolates of ST196 and ST648, as well as two ST35 Klebsiella pneumoniae gut and sputum isolates of a cystic fibrosis patient. The armA gene was located within the antimicrobial resistance island ARI-A and the blaOXA181 gene, which was preceded by IS903 and ISEcp1Î was inserted within the transfer genes region without affecting conjugation ability. Comparative plasmid analysis with other related IncC plasmids showed the presence of blaOXA181, as well as its integration site, are thus far unique for these types of plasmids. This study illustrates the potential of a promiscuous multidrug resistance plasmid to acquire antibiotic resistance genes and to disseminate in the gut of the same host. IMPORTANCE Colocalization of carbapenemases and aminoglycoside resistance 16S rRNA methylases on a multidrug resistance conjugative plasmid poses a serious threat to public health. Here, we describe the novel IncC plasmid pJEF1-OXA-181 cocarrying blaOXA-181 and armA as well as several other antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in different Enterobacterales isolates of the sputum and gut microbiota of a cystic fibrosis patient. IncC plasmids are conjugative, promiscuous elements which can incorporate accessory antimicrobial resistance islands making them key players in ARGs spread. This plasmid was thus far unique among IncC plasmids to contain a blaOXA-181 which was integrated in the transfer gene region without affecting its conjugation ability. This study highlights that new plasmids may be introduced into a hospital through different species hosted in one single patient. It further emphasizes the need of continuous surveillance of multidrug-resistant bacteria in patients at risk to avoid spread of such plasmids in the health care system
