Called to Respond

The Canadian Jesuit Refugee Programme hosted the conference "Called to Respond: Refugees and the New Canadian Reality" on October 28-30. The objective was to develop a working strategy on options to continue supporting refugees. Given the ambiguity of how the new legislation will be manifest in practice, our "new reality" is currently largely unknown quantity. Clearly, in these circumstances, the process of developing a strategy is dynamic in nature since strategizing must anticipate the need to respond to reality as it unfolds

Women in the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation, Leadership, and Media Coverage

The report analyzes the representation and participation of women in the international and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic organizations. Specifically, it examines the types and extent of opportunities that are provided for women in administrative and leadership roles within these structures as well as the chances women have to compete in the Games themselves. This report also assesses the extent that the IOC, IPC and United States Olympic Committee (USOC) are fulfilling their stated missions with respect to fairness to fairness and gender equity and whether or not legal statutes are being upheld

Women in the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation, Leadership, and Media Coverage

This report is the eighth in the series that follows the progress of women in the Olympic and Paralympic movement. The first three reports were published by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The fourth report was published by SHARP, the Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center for Women and Girls. SHARP was a research center at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender, co-founded by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The fifth report, published in 2017 by the Women’s Sports Foundation, provided the most comprehensive examination of the participation trends among female Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the hiring trends of Olympic and Paralympic governing bodies with respect to the number of women who hold, leadership positions in these organizations. The sixth and seventh reports examined the same issues for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively. This report about the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is intended to provide governing bodies, athletes, and policymakers at the national and international level with even greater depth with an eye toward making the Olympic and Paralympic movement equitable for all. Changing an impermissible LIFO method

Taxpayers utilizing an impermissible last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory method may be able to change it into a “permissible” one at a modest tax cost. Rev. Proc. 97-27 provides that the IRS is not precluded from transforming an impermissible method in an earlier year just because a taxpayer alters a submethod within the impermissible method in a later year. As a result, taxpayers should examine their LIFO method and, if permissible, alter it before the IRS challenges it and tries to include the LIFO reserves in income. Moreover, taxpayers utilizing an impermissible LIFO method or submethod that has generated large prior advantages need not recognize them under a cut-off method in the form of a Sec. 481(a) adjustment. A recent Tax Court case, Mountain State Ford Truck Sales, Inc., is discussed to illustrate the significant negative tax consequences of utilizing impermissible LIFO inventory account procedures

Challenges for Malaria Elimination in Zanzibar: Pyrethroid Resistance in Malaria Vectors and Poor Performance of Long-Lasting Insecticide Nets.

Long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual house spraying (IRS) are the main interventions for the control of malaria vectors in Zanzibar. The aim of the present study was to assess the susceptibility status of malaria vectors against the insecticides used for LLINs and IRS and to determine the durability and efficacy of LLINs on the island. Mosquitoes were sampled from Pemba and Unguja islands in 2010--2011 for use in WHO susceptibility tests. One hundred and fifty LLINs were collected from households on Unguja, their physical state was recorded and then tested for efficacy as well as total insecticide content. Species identification revealed that over 90% of the Anopheles gambiae complex was An. arabiensis with a small number of An. gambiae s.s. and An. merus being present. Susceptibility tests showed that An. arabiensis on Pemba was resistant to the pyrethroids used for LLINs and IRS. Mosquitoes from Unguja Island, however, were fully susceptible to all pyrethroids tested. A physical examination of 150 LLINs showed that two thirds were damaged after only three years in use. All used nets had a significantly lower (p < 0.001) mean permethrin concentration of 791.6 mg/m2 compared with 944.2 mg/m2 for new ones. Their efficacy decreased significantly against both susceptible An. gambiae s.s. colony mosquitoes and wild-type mosquitoes from Pemba after just six washes (p < 0.001). The sustainability of the gains achieved in malaria control in Zanzibar is seriously threatened by the resistance of malaria vectors to pyrethroids and the short-lived efficacy of LLINs. This study has revealed that even in relatively well-resourced and logistically manageable places like Zanzibar, malaria elimination is going to be difficult to achieve with the current control measures
