Spatial Distribution of Competing Ions around DNA in Solution
The competition of monovalent and divalent cations for proximity to negatively charged DNA is of biological importance and can provide strong constraints for theoretical treatments of polyelectrolytes. Resonant x-ray scattering experiments have allowed us to monitor the number and distribution of each cation in a mixed ion cloud around DNA. These measurements provide experimental evidence to support a general theoretical prediction: the normalized distribution of each ion around polyelectrolytes remains constant when ions are mixed at different ratios. In addition, the amplitudes of the scattering signals throughout the competition provide a measurement of the surface concentration parameter that predicts the competition behavior of these cations. The data suggest that ion size needs to be taken into account in applying Poisson-Boltzmann treatments to polyelectrolytes such as DNA
The state of methamphetamine ('tik') use among youth in the Western Cape, South Africa
BACKGROUND Methamphetamine use among youth in the Western Cape Province of South Africa has increased at alarming rates over the
past decade. Although current estimates of youth use exist, they range from 2% to 12%.
OBJECTIVES To identify (i) the prevalence of methamphetamine use in Western Cape youth and (ii) the association between use and known
risk factors for methamphetamine use.
METHODS Data were obtained from 10 000 Western Cape Province Grade 8 learners in 54 secondary schools (mean age 14.0 years).
Prevalence was descriptively reported while risk factors for past-month use were modelled in a hierarchical logistic regression with demographic,
socioeconomic status, substance use, sexual activity and relationship predictors.
RESULTS Approximately 5% (n=496) of learners had used methamphetamine within their lifetime. Of these users, 65% (n=322) had used in
the past month or week. Compared to never users, past-month users were more likely to be male, less likely to have a present or partially
present mother, less likely to live in an apartment/flat/brick house, more likely to have used alcohol and tobacco and more likely to report
having a same-sex partner.
CONCLUSION Results replicate previously known methamphetamine risk factors and highlight the need to address methamphetamine use in
comprehensive prevention initiatives.DHE
Intestinal barrier dysfunction in inflammatory bowel diseases
The etiology of human inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) is believed to involve inappropriate host responses to the complex commensal microbial flora in the gut, although an altered commensal flora is not completely excluded. A multifunctional cellular and secreted barrier separates the microbial flora from host tissues. Altered function of this barrier remains a major largely unexplored pathway to IBD. Although there is evidence of barrier dysfunction in IBD, it remains unclear whether this is a primary contributor to disease or a consequence of mucosal inflammation. Recent evidence from animal models demonstrating that genetic defects restricted to the epithelium can initiate intestinal inflammation in the presence of normal underlying immunity has refocused attention on epithelial dysfunction in IBD. We review the components of the secreted and cellular barrier, their regulation, including interactions with underlying innate and adaptive immunity, evidence from animal models of the barrier's role in preventing intestinal inflammation, and evidence of barrier dysfunction in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Composite Accretion Disk and White Dwarf Photosphere Analyses of the FUSE and HST Observations of EY Cygni
We explore the origin of FUSE and HST STIS far UV spectra of the dwarf nova,
EY Cyg, during its quiescence using \emph{combined} high gravity photosphere
and accretion disk models as well as model accretion belts. The best-fitting
single temperature white dwarf model to the FUSE plus HST STIS spectrum of EY
Cygni has TK, log , with an Si abundance of 0.1 x
solar and C abundance of 0.2 x solar but the distance is only 301 pc. The
best-fitting composite model consists of white dwarf with TK,
log , plus an accretion belt with TK covering 27% of
the white dwarf surface with V km/s. The accretion belt
contributes 63% of the FUV light and the cooler white dwarf latitudes
contribute 37%. This fit yields a distance of 351 pc which is within 100 pc of
our adopted distance of 450 pc. EY Cyg has very weak C {\sc iv} emission and
very strong N {\sc v} emission, which is atypical of the majority of dwarf
novae in quiescence. We also conducted a morphological study of the
surroundings of EY Cyg using direct imaging in narrow nebular filters from
ground-based telescopes. We report the possible detection of nebular material^M
associated with EY Cygni. Possible origins of the apparently large N {\scv}/C
{\sc iv} emission ratio are discussed in the context of nova explosions,
contamination of the secondary star and accretion of nova abundance-enriched
matter back to the white dwarf via the accretion disk or as a descendant of a
precursor binary that survived thermal timescale mass transfer. The scenario
involving pollution of the secondary by past novae may be supported by the

Paracrine-Rescued Lobulogenesis in Chimeric Outgrowths Comprising Progesterone-Receptor-Null Mammary Epithelium and Redirected Wild-Type Testicular Cells
We have previously shown that non-mammary and tumorigenic cells can respond to the signals of the mammary niche and alter their cell fate to that of mammary epithelial progenitor cells. Here we tested the hypothesis that paracrine signals from mammary epithelial cells expressing progesterone receptor (PR) are dispensable for redirection of testicular cells, and that re-directed wild-type testicular-derived mammary cells can rescue lobulogenesis of PR-null mammary epithelium by paracrine signaling during pregnancy. We injected PR-null epithelial cells mixed with testicular cells from wild-type adult male mice into cleared fat-pads of recipient mice. The testicular cells were redirected in vivo to mammary epithelial cell fate during regeneration of the mammary epithelium, and persisted in second-generation outgrowths. In the process, the redirected testicular cells rescued the developmentally deficient PR-null cells, signaling them through the paracrine factor RANKL to produce alveolar secretory structures during pregnancy. This is the first demonstration that paracrine signaling required for alveolar development is not required for cellular reprogramming in the mammary gland, and that reprogrammed testicular cells can provide paracrine signals to the surrounding mammary epithelium
Estimating extragalactic Faraday rotation
(abridged) Observations of Faraday rotation for extragalactic sources probe
magnetic fields both inside and outside the Milky Way. Building on our earlier
estimate of the Galactic contribution, we set out to estimate the extragalactic
contributions. We discuss the problems involved; in particular, we point out
that taking the difference between the observed values and the Galactic
foreground reconstruction is not a good estimate for the extragalactic
contributions. We point out a degeneracy between the contributions to the
observed values due to extragalactic magnetic fields and observational noise
and comment on the dangers of over-interpreting an estimate without taking into
account its uncertainty information. To overcome these difficulties, we develop
an extended reconstruction algorithm based on the assumption that the
observational uncertainties are accurately described for a subset of the data,
which can overcome the degeneracy with the extragalactic contributions. We
present a probabilistic derivation of the algorithm and demonstrate its
performance using a simulation, yielding a high quality reconstruction of the
Galactic Faraday rotation foreground, a precise estimate of the typical
extragalactic contribution, and a well-defined probabilistic description of the
extragalactic contribution for each data point. We then apply this
reconstruction technique to a catalog of Faraday rotation observations. We vary
our assumptions about the data, showing that the dispersion of extragalactic
contributions to observed Faraday depths is most likely lower than 7 rad/m^2,
in agreement with earlier results, and that the extragalactic contribution to

Temporal Trends in Florida Panther Food Habits
Once on the brink of extinction, the Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) has reoccupied parts of its extirpated range in southern Florida, USA over the past 20 years, which has largely been attributed to genetic restoration efforts initiated in 1995 to combat inbreeding depression and subsequent deleterious traits. Concurrent to the resurgence, an increase in documented livestock depredation events has heightened concern over human– panther conflicts. We examined 312 stomach content, scat, and feces (large intestine contents) samples collected 1989 to 2014 across the endemic range in southern Florida. We compared frequency of occurrence of prey items in samples by temporal (pre- and post-genetic restoration), geographic (north and south of 26° 10.017′ latitude), and demographic (age and sex) categories. We observed an apparent temporal shift in prey item occurrence in scats, where raccoon (Procyon lotor) occurrence increased while wild hog (Sus scrofa) occurrence decreased, whereas white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) occurrence appeared constant. Post-genetic restoration, we observed a geographic difference in panther prey, where white-tailed deer and raccoons were consumed more commonly in the southern part of the study area (characterized by lower soil quality and higher hydrological fluctuations), while wild hogs were consumed more frequently in the northern part of the study area. Neither sex nor age appeared to affect frequency of prey occurrence. Pets and livestock were not frequently found in the samples we examined. Overall, our results show shifts in panther diets both temporally and geographically; however, no notable changes in frequency of livestock found in panther diets were observed
Cosmological Constraints on Dissipative Models of Inflation
(Abridged) We study dissipative inflation in the regime where the dissipative
term takes a specific form, \Gamma=\Gamma(\phi), analyzing two models in the
weak and strong dissipative regimes with a SUSY breaking potential. After
developing intuition about the predictions from these models through analytic
approximations, we compute the predicted cosmological observables through full
numerical evolution of the equations of motion, relating the mass scale and
scale of dissipation to the characteristic amplitude and shape of the
primordial power spectrum. We then use Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques to
constrain a subset of the models with cosmological data from the cosmic
microwave background (WMAP three-year data) and large scale structure (SDSS
Luminous Red Galaxy power spectrum). We find that the posterior distributions
of the dissipative parameters are highly non-Gaussian and their allowed ranges
agree well with the expectations obtained using analytic approximations. In the
weak regime, only the mass scale is tightly constrained; conversely, in the
strong regime, only the dissipative coefficient is tightly constrained. A lower
limit is seen on the inflation scale: a sub-Planckian inflaton is disfavoured
by the data. In both weak and strong regimes, we reconstruct the limits on the
primordial power spectrum and show that these models prefer a {\it red}
spectrum, with no significant running of the index. We calculate the reheat
temperature and show that the gravitino problem can be overcome with large
dissipation, which in turn leads to large levels of non-Gaussianity: if
dissipative inflation is to evade the gravitino problem, the predicted level of
