Promoting Partnerships for Student Success: Lessons from the SSPIRE Initiative

The Student Support Partnership Integrating Resources and Education (SSPIRE) initiative aimed to increase the success of young, low-income, and academically underprepared California community college students by helping colleges strengthen their support services and better integrate these services with academic instruction. This report describes what the nine participating community colleges did to meet the goals of SSPIRE and offers lessons for other institutions drawn from MDRC's research on the initiative

Women in the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation, Leadership, and Media Coverage

The report analyzes the representation and participation of women in the international and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic organizations. Specifically, it examines the types and extent of opportunities that are provided for women in administrative and leadership roles within these structures as well as the chances women have to compete in the Games themselves. This report also assesses the extent that the IOC, IPC and United States Olympic Committee (USOC) are fulfilling their stated missions with respect to fairness to fairness and gender equity and whether or not legal statutes are being upheld

An unwell patient with Parkinson’s disease:hyperpyrexia syndrome in a heatwave

Hyperpyrexia syndrome in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a medical emergency requiring prompt action. This can be precipitated by numerous provoking factors, in particular withdrawal of dopaminergic medication. We report a case of a patient with PD presenting with confusion, dramatic worsening of PD symptoms and pyrexia in the context of a heatwave, potentially mediating its effect through dehydration and impaired medication absorption. Precipitous cooling and conversion of dopaminergic medication to a rotigotine patch due to drowsiness led to her rapid improvement. The possibility of infection was covered however no source of infection or evidence of inflammatory response was found, but remained an important differential. This case highlights the importance of recognising and managing hyperpyrexia syndrome in PD and the possibility of uncharacteristically hot weather being a cause

Women in the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation, Leadership, and Media Coverage

This report is the eighth in the series that follows the progress of women in the Olympic and Paralympic movement. The first three reports were published by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The fourth report was published by SHARP, the Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center for Women and Girls. SHARP was a research center at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender, co-founded by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The fifth report, published in 2017 by the Women’s Sports Foundation, provided the most comprehensive examination of the participation trends among female Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the hiring trends of Olympic and Paralympic governing bodies with respect to the number of women who hold, leadership positions in these organizations. The sixth and seventh reports examined the same issues for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively. This report about the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is intended to provide governing bodies, athletes, and policymakers at the national and international level with even greater depth with an eye toward making the Olympic and Paralympic movement equitable for all. Lessons learned compiling data from multiple clinical sources to understand differences in post-surgical shoulder pathology in diabetics and pre-diabetics

"Diabetic patients suffer from shoulder joint pathologies at a rate five times higher than the non-diabetic population. Diabetes is an independent risk factor for postoperative complications. We sought to determine to what extent prediabetics experience shoulder surgery complications. We set out to review rotator cuff repair (RCR) procedures at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) from January 1st, 2015 through December 31st, 2020. There are significant roadblocks to studying our original research question: Delays associated with data requests. Unexpected source file formatting that required manual manipulation. Multiple patient identifiers used in different records systems. Less-than-expected completion of patient outcome questionnaires. We present the challenges associated with receiving, cross-referencing, and organizing patient data in order to prepare for data collection and analysis."--Introduction
