Formative years: Hans Freudenthal in prewar Amsterdam

International audienceHans Freudenthal started his public career in mathematics education after the war. During the war, when he was expelled by the Germans from the university, he made a thorough study of the didactics of teaching arithmetic. Freudenthal himself made on several places remarks about the influences he underwent before the war, he even suggested that his “framework” on mathematics education was already formed then. Although he was in those year active as a mathematician in the first place, there can be no doubt that he was then already seriously interested in the problems of the teaching of mathematics. He had inspiring discussions with other mathematicians with unorthodox ideas about the teaching of mathematics and read publications that helped him to develop his own ideas. The seeds that were sown in those years would bear fruit long afterwards.</p

Energy‐efficient asset management for professional landlords

CO2 reduction by means of energy conservation is an important topic in many governmental environmental policies. As new construction accounts for a fraction of the total building stock, the energy performance of existing dwellings is of great importance. Professional landlords can play a major role in energy conservation, but there are indications that the large energy conservation potential in their housing existing stock is only exploited to a minor extent. This paper presents a method to implement the topic energy conservation in the asset management of professional landlords, in order to establish an integration of energy conservation in their maintenance and renovation practice. This method is described in relation to the asset management of Dutch social housing landlords, but may also be useful for other professional landlords. The method takes advantage of the European EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive). First published online: 18 Oct 201

On the Two-View Geometry of Unsynchronized Cameras

We present new methods for simultaneously estimating camera geometry and time shift from video sequences from multiple unsynchronized cameras. Algorithms for simultaneous computation of a fundamental matrix or a homography with unknown time shift between images are developed. Our methods use minimal correspondence sets (eight for fundamental matrix and four and a half for homography) and therefore are suitable for robust estimation using RANSAC. Furthermore, we present an iterative algorithm that extends the applicability on sequences which are significantly unsynchronized, finding the correct time shift up to several seconds. We evaluated the methods on synthetic and wide range of real world datasets and the results show a broad applicability to the problem of camera synchronization.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 201

Kadangi naujos statybos sudaro tik maža visu pastatu ištekliu dali, jau pastatytu bûstu energinis naudingumas labai svarbus. Profesionaliu nuomotoju vaidmuo taupant energija gali būti svarbus, tačiau yra ženklu, kad didžiulis ju turimu jau pastatytu būstu energijos taupymo potencialas išnaudojamas nedaug. Šiame darbe pristatomas metodas, kaip energijos taupymo tema itraukti i profesionaliu nuomotoju turto valdyma, kad energijos taupymas taptu ju priežiūros ir renovacijos praktikos dalis. Metodo aprašymas remiasi Olandijos socialinio būsto savininku turto valdymo praktika, bet jis gali būti naudingas ir kitiems profesionaliems nuomotojams. Novel Surgical Treatment of an Intraretinal Juxtapapillary Hemangioblastoma Using Intraocular Diathermy Forceps:A Case Report

The surgical treatment of intraretinal juxtapapillary retinal hemangioblastomas (JRHs) was previously contraindicated because of the significant risk of collateral damage to the macula and optic nerve. This case report discusses the effectiveness and safety of a novel surgical technique using intraocular bipolar diathermy forceps to coagulate feeder and draining blood vessels of an intraretinal JRH. The patient suffered from bilateral retinal hemangioblastomas with loss of visual function in one eye and the development of an intraretinal JRH in the other eye. Despite intensive treatment with intravitreal bevacizumab and subconjunctival triamcinolone acetonide, growth of the intraretinal JRH continued, macular exudation worsened, and visual acuity decreased. Surgical treatment was undertaken in which, first, the feeder and draining vessels of the JRH were identified by comparing the retinal imaging of the JRH with the imaging before the emergence of the JRH 4 years earlier. Then, retinal incisions were made above the blood vessels and parallel to the nerve fibers during a pars plana vitrectomy. Lastly, these vessels were lifted above the retinal surface and coagulated using intraocular diathermy forceps. Postoperatively, macular edema reduced, and visual acuity increased and remained stable for about 6 months. Using intraocular diathermy forceps, this case report demonstrates effective and safe intraretinal JRH blood vessel coagulation above the retinal surface. This novel surgical approach was able to delay the deterioration of visual acuity due to tumor growth and exudation in this patient. This suggests that coagulation with intraocular diathermy forceps can be considered an additional surgical treatment option for JRHs, especially those with an intraretinal growth pattern.</p
