Gas phase reaction system using anhydrous ammonia removes nitrogen dioxide. System consists of ammonia injection and mixing section, reaction section /reactor/, and scrubber section. All sections are contained in system ducting

First Records of the Northern Long-eared Bat, Myotis septentrionalis, in the Yukon Territory

Three adult male Northern Long-eared Bats, Myotis septentrionalis, were captured in mist nets in July 2004 in the LaBiche River Valley, southeastern Yukon. These are the first records of M. septentrionalis in the Yukon. Further survey work is needed to delineate the extent of the range and population structure of this and other species of bats in northwestern North America

First Records of the Southern Red-backed Vole, Myodes gapperi, in the Yukon

Twenty Southern Red-backed Voles, Myodes gapperi, were collected in July 2004 in the LaBiche River valley of southeastern Yukon. Specimens were identified using morphological characteristics and analysis of cytochrome b gene sequences. These are the first records of this species in the Yukon. No Northern Red-backed Voles, M. rutilus, were collected and it is not known whether the two species are sympatric or parapatric in the Yukon. Further survey work is needed in southeastern Yukon to better delineate the extent of the northwestern range of this species and the extent, if any, of introgression with M. rutilus

Multi-Touch Tablets, E-Books, and an Emerging Multi-Coding/Multi-Sensory Theory for Reading Science e-Textbooks: Considering the Struggling Reader

    Get PDF
Pavio’s Dual-Coding Theory (1991) and Mayer’s Multimedia Principal (2000) form the foundation for proposing a multi-coding theory centered around Multi-Touch Tablets and the newest generation of e-textbooks to scaffold struggling readers in reading and learning from science textbooks. Using E. O. Wilson’s Life on Earth: An Introduction (2012) as a simulation for our essay, we theorize that text, graphics, interactive elements, and audio represent four distinct encoding schemes. Each of these encoding schemes can be used as separate but mutually supportive scaffolds to assist struggling students in reading and learning with science textbooks. The open access fee for this work was funded through the Texas A&M University Open Access to Knowledge (OAK) Fund

The Golgin GMAP210/TRIP11 Anchors IFT20 to the Golgi Complex

Eukaryotic cells often use proteins localized to the ciliary membrane to monitor the extracellular environment. The mechanism by which proteins are sorted, specifically to this subdomain of the plasma membrane, is almost completely unknown. Previously, we showed that the IFT20 subunit of the intraflagellar transport particle is localized to the Golgi complex, in addition to the cilium and centrosome, and hypothesized that the Golgi pool of IFT20 plays a role in sorting proteins to the ciliary membrane. Here, we show that IFT20 is anchored to the Golgi complex by the golgin protein GMAP210/Trip11. Mice lacking GMAP210 die at birth with a pleiotropic phenotype that includes growth restriction, ventricular septal defects of the heart, omphalocele, and lung hypoplasia. Cells lacking GMAP210 have normal Golgi structure, but IFT20 is no longer localized to this organelle. GMAP210 is not absolutely required for ciliary assembly, but cilia on GMAP210 mutant cells are shorter than normal and have reduced amounts of the membrane protein polycystin-2 localized to them. This work suggests that GMAP210 and IFT20 function together at the Golgi in the sorting or transport of proteins destined for the ciliary membrane

Calculation of RDX molecular crystal geometry and vibrational frequencies under hydrostatic pressure

    No full text
First-principles calculations of the effects of hydrostatic pressure on RDX are performed using the all-electron CRYSTAL06 program. The lattice constants and optimized internal coordinates are simultaneously obtained at ambient pressure and hydrostatic pressure up to 2.9 GPa. The vibrational frequencies as a function of pressure are also calculated and compared with experimental results from the literature. © 2007 American Institute of Physics

Graphing Calculators and Algebra I, Algebra II, IPC, and Chemistry Teachers’ Perceptions of Change

Graphing calculators have been suggested as one tool that can be used to facilitate increased integration between mathematics and science. This paper investigates the graphing calculator as an innovation with a group of high school mathematics and science teachers (n = 43) who are participating in a year-long inservice program to increase mathematics and science integration. The Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ) was given to the teachers to assess their concerns about graphing calculators. Results demonstrate that although algebra I and II teachers are more familiar with graphing calculators than IPC and chemistry teachers, all four groups have similar concerns and that these concerns focus on high information stage concerns, high personal stage concerns, and high collaboration stage concerns

Analysis of α-phase RDX vibrational lattice modes under hydrostatic pressure

    No full text
Calculations using the all-electron CRYSTAL06 program employing density functional theory are used to calculate the terahertz vibrational frequencies of α-phase RDX. The lowest frequency infrared active lattice modes are investigated as a function of hydrostatic pressure from ambient conditions up to 3 GPa. A given mode may be composed of both external and internal vibration contributions, with the composition changing as a function of pressure. The anharmonic deviation of each mode from simple harmonic behavior as a function of pressure is also explored. © 2009 American Institute of Physics
