    Flipping Argument

    This project utilizes the concept of “flipping the classroom” pioneered by the Kahn Academy to help students understand Aristotelian elements of argument (ethos, pathos, and logos). The four lesson plans require students to preview existing internet resources depicting practical applications of rhetorical concepts, and then invites them to utilize these concepts in the classroom. Students learn to recognize logical fallacies and types of argumentative appeals as they are used (and misused) in popular culture and in literature. The project as a whole has the additional benefit of encouraging students to identify and critically evaluate explicit and implicit arguments in a range of media, from blogs, to YouTube videos, to television drama, to advertising. Students will gain a sense of what makes an effective argument, and how argument is deployed in daily life, popular culture and literature

    Infrared and visual lunar occultations measurements of stellar diameters and new binary stars detections at the Calar Alto 1.5m telescope

    We present a program of routine lunar occultations, at optical and near-IR wavelengths, recently started at the 1.5m Spanish telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory. Both a CCD and an infrared array detector are used. The program is aimed mainly at the detection and investigation of binary systems, although results in other areas of stellar research are also anticipated. Occultations are reported for a total of 40 stars. Among these, SAO 164567, SAO 78258 and AG+24 788 have been discovered to be binaries, with projected separations as small as 0.006". Furthermore, binarity is suspected in the case of SAO 78119 and SAO 79251. Additionally, the angular diameter of the late-type giant 30 Psc and of the infrared star V349 Gem have been accurately measured, this latter for the first time. We finally evaluate the instrumentation performance in terms of limiting magnitude and angular resolution, and discuss applications to larger telescopes.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, uses aa.cls.     Detecting Inappropriate Clarification Requests in Spoken Dialogue Systems

    Spoken Dialogue Systems ask for clarification when they think they have misunderstood users. Such requests may differ depending on the information the system believes it needs to clarify. However, when the error type or location is misidentified, clarification requests appear confusing or inappropriate. We describe a classifier that identifies inappropriate requests, trained on features extracted from user responses in laboratory studies. This classifier achieves 88.5% accuracy and .885 F-measure in detecting such requests

Hydrate-bearing core samples were collected at the BPXA-DOE-USGS Mount Elbert Gas Hydrate Stratigraphic Test Well in February 2007. Coring was performed while using a custom oil-based drilling mud, and the cores were retrieved by a wireline. The samples were characterized and subsampled at the surface under ambient winter arctic conditions. Samples thought to be hydrate bearing were preserved either by immersion in liquid nitrogen (LN), or by storage under methane pressure at ambient arctic conditions, and later depressurized and immersed in LN. Eleven core samples from hydrate-bearing zones were scanned using x-ray computed tomography to examine core structure and homogeneity. Features observed include radial fractures, spalling-type fractures, and reduced density near the periphery. These features were induced during sample collection, handling, and preservation. Isotopic analysis of the methane from hydrate in an initially LN-preserved core and a pressure-preserved core indicate that secondary hydrate formation occurred throughout the pressurized core, whereas none occurred in the LN-preserved core, however no hydrate was found near the periphery of the LN-preserved core. To replicate some aspects of the preservation methods, natural and laboratory-made saturated porous media samples were frozen in a variety of ways, with radial fractures observed in some LN-frozen sands, and needle-like ice crystals forming in slowly frozen clay-rich sediments.     Geologic controls on gas hydrate occurrence in the Mount Elbert prospect, Alaska North Slope

The definitive version was published in Marine and Petroleum Geology 28 (2011): 589-607, doi:10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2009.12.004.Data acquired at the BPXA-DOE-USGS Mount Elbert Gas Hydrate Stratigraphic Test Well, drilled in the Milne Point area of the Alaska North Slope in February, 2007, indicates two zones of high gas hydrate saturation within the Eocene Sagavanirktok Formation. Gas hydrate is observed in two separate sand reservoirs (the D and C units), in the stratigraphically highest portions of those sands, and is not detected in non-sand lithologies. In the younger D unit, gas hydrate appears to fill much of the available reservoir space at the top of the unit. The degree of vertical fill with the D unit is closely related to the unit reservoir quality. A thick, low-permeability clay-dominated unit serves as an upper seal, whereas a subtle transition to more clay-rich, and interbedded sand, silt, and clay units is associated with the base of gas hydrate occurrence. In the underlying C unit, the reservoir is similarly capped by a clay-dominated section, with gas hydrate filling the relatively lower-quality sands at the top of the unit leaving an underlying thick section of high-reservoir quality sands devoid of gas hydrate. Evaluation of well log, core, and seismic data indicate that the gas hydrate occurs within complex combination stratigraphic/structural traps. Structural trapping is provided by a four-way fold closure augmented by a large western bounding fault. Lithologic variation is also a likely strong control on lateral extent of the reservoirs, particularly in the D unit accumulation, where gas hydrate appears to extend beyond the limits of the structural closure. Porous and permeable zones within the C unit sand are only partially charged due most likely to limited structural trapping in the reservoir lithofacies during the period of primary charging. The occurrence of the gas hydrate within the sands in the upper portions of both the C and D units and along the crest of the fold is consistent with an interpretation that these deposits are converted free gas accumulations formed prior to the imposition of gas hydrate stability conditions

    ACR Appropriateness CriteriaÂź Spinal Bone Metastases

    The spine is a common site of involvement in patients with bone metastases. Apart from pain, hypercalcemia, and pathologic fracture, progressive tumor can result in neurologic deterioration caused by spinal cord compression or cauda equina involvement. The treatment of spinal bone metastases depends on histology, site of disease, extent of epidural disease, extent of metastases elsewhere, and neurologic status. Treatment recommendations must weigh the risk-benefit profile of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for the particular individual's circumstance, including neurologic status, performance status, extent of spinal disease, stability of the spine, extra-spinal disease status, and life expectancy. Patients with spinal instability should be evaluated for surgical intervention. Research studies are needed that evaluate the combination or sequencing of localized therapies with systemic therapies including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy (HT), osteoclast inhibitors (OI), and radiopharmaceuticals. The roles of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in the management of spinal oligometastasis, radioresistant spinal metastasis, and previously irradiated but progressive spinal metastasis are emerging, but more research is needed to validate the findings from retrospective studies. The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed every 2 years by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and review include an extensive analysis of current medical literature from peer-reviewed journals and the application of a well-established consensus methodology (modified Delphi) to rate the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures by the panel.     Intrapulmonary Pharmacokinetics of First-line Anti-tuberculosis Drugs in Malawian Patients With Tuberculosis

    BACKGROUND: Further work is required to understand the intrapulmonary pharmacokinetics of first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs. This study aimed to describe the plasma and intrapulmonary pharmacokinetics of rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, and explore relationships with clinical treatment outcomes in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS: Malawian adults with a first presentation of microbiologically-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis received standard 6-month first-line therapy. Plasma and intrapulmonary samples were collected 8 and 16 weeks into treatment and drug concentrations measured in plasma, lung/airway epithelial lining fluid, and alveolar cells. Population pharmacokinetic modelling generated estimates of drug exposure (Cmax and AUC) from individual-level post-hoc Bayesian estimates of plasma and intrapulmonary pharmacokinetics. RESULTS: One-hundred-and-fifty-seven patients (58% HIV co-infected) participated. Despite standard weight-based dosing, peak plasma concentrations of first-line drugs were below therapeutic drug monitoring targets. Rifampicin concentrations were low in all three compartments. Isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol achieved higher concentrations in epithelial lining fluid and alveolar cells than plasma. Isoniazid and pyrazinamide concentrations were 14.6 (95% CI: 11.2-18.0) and 49.8-fold (95% CI: 34.2-65.3) higher in lining fluid than plasma respectively. Ethambutol concentrations were highest in alveolar cells (alveolar cells:plasma ratio 15.0, 95% CI 11.4-18.6). Plasma or intrapulmonary pharmacokinetics did not predict clinical treatment response. CONCLUSIONS: We report differential drug concentrations between plasma and the lung. While plasma concentrations were below therapeutic monitoring targets, accumulation of drugs at the site of disease may explain the success of the first-line regimen. The low rifampicin concentrations observed in all compartments lend strong support for ongoing clinical trials of high-dose rifampicin regimens
