Project Panormos is an international archaeological research project, centred on a recently-identified ancient necropolis near Didyma, located on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Since its establishment in 2012, the research has been undertaken as a cooperative effort between archaeological researchers from DAI’s Istanbul department and the archaeological Museum of Balat / Miletus (Aydın province, Turkey). The project aims to examine a number of historical issues, ranging from the lifestyles and geographical origins of the individuals who were buried at the necropolis, to recording and interpreting details of local/regional funerary practices, and to improving our knowledge of trade and interaction during the early 1st millennium BC

This article presents a comprehensive description and analysis of the Roman periodfunerary materials from Seleukeia Sidera in Pisidia found outside of their originalcontext. The sarcophagi, ostothekai, stelae, and busts in this collection werebrought to the regional museum in past decades or were found during more recentarchaeological surveys. This article offers a full catalogue of the funerary items, many of which are unpublished. Despite the relatively modest number of items, the collection allows us to reconstruct funerary customs at the site and to investigateprocesses of identity-formation in the burial grounds. We highlight the significantresearch potential of such ex-situ materials and treat them as one assemblage, integrating their textual, visual, and physical components. Our article is intendedto demonstrate the value hidden in these so-called legacy datasets, thereby intersectingwith debates on curation issues of heritage institutions in Turkey

Project Panormos Archaeological Survey: Archaeological Data (survey-data)

    No full text
This forms part of the preliminary open data release for the Project Panormos archaeological survey. This "panormos/survey-data" repository contains archaeological data collected as part of the Project Panormos intensive archaeological survey, including tract data (pottery counts, environment, etc.), POI (points-of-interest), finds descriptions and contexts. Scripts to correct raw imported data files (e.g. from ODK software) into the canonical or clean versions are also made available here. Release 0.1.0 includes data from the 2015 season. It is a pre-publication or observation version. No derivative works should be made until the expiry of the observation phase: please see enclosed LICENSE file for details. Releases below 1.0.0 represent preprint working datasets before final publication. Although every effort has been made to reduce errors and make the datasets available in a form that should be easy to navigate, the status of the data as a form of "beta" should be borne in mind
