Preliminary Results on the Structure and Functioning of a Taiga Watershed

Comprehensive research in ecosystem functioning may logically be undertaken in the conceptual and physical context of complete drainage basins (watersheds or catchments). The watershed forms a fundamental, cohesive landscape unit in terms of water movement following initial receipt of precipitation. Water itself is a fundamental agent in energy flux, nutrient transport, and in plant and animal life. The Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed is an interagency endeavor aimed at understanding hydrologic and, ultimately, ecological functioning in the subarctic taiga, the discontinuous permafrost uplands of central Alaska. Initial work includes acquisition and analysis of data on soils, vegetation, local climate, hydrology, and stream quality. Information acquired in the research watershed is summarized here, and implications for future data acquisition and research are considered

Virtual Worlds: Between Contract and Property

Although virtual worlds have existed in some form for several years, it is only recently that the phrase has begun to seem truly accurate, with many users increasingly choosing to live the primary part of their days logged into a virtual world. While virtual worlds are causing us to rethink how we view relationships and communications, they are also increasingly coming into conflict with our prior conceived notions of property law. With virtual worlds facing an escalating number of conflicts over property ownership, it is becoming imperative that the status of virtual property be addressed to ensure the continued growth of virtual worlds and their nascent, booming economies. In this Article, I examine the current conflicts over property rights within virtual worlds and offer a solution to the current problems. Although the status quo is untenable, I show that neither property law nor contract law can provide an exclusive solution to the current conflict. Instead, I argue that virtual worlds and their unique characteristics call for the creation of a new type of property interest, which I call the virtual easement. Combining features of both property and contract law, the virtual easement allows for sufficient user property protections as well as maintaining virtual world companies’ control over their worlds. If established, the virtual easement should allow for continued growth of virtual world economies with a minimum of governmental interference. I conclude with a discussion of possible policy concerns relating to the establishment of the virtual easement

Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Assessment of the orbiter main propulsion system FMEA/CIL, volume 1

The results of the Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Critical Items List (CIL) are presented. The IOA effort first completed an analysis of the Main Propulsion System (MPS) hardware, generating draft failure modes and potential critical items. To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. The IOA results were then compared to available data from the Rockwell Downey/NASA JSC FMEA/CIL review. The Orbiter MPS is composed of the Propellant Management Subsystem (PMS) consisting of the liquid oxygen (LO2) and liquid hydrogen (LH2) subsystems and the helium subsystem. The PMS is a system of manifolds, distribution lines, and valves by which the liquid propellants pass from the External Tank to the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The helium subsystem consists of a series of helium supply tanks and their associated regulators, control valves, and distribution lines. Sulphur River Formation and the Pleistocene Mammals of the Ben Franklin Local Fauna

An extensive alluvial deposit in northeastern Texas is here described and named the Sulphur River Formation. Twenty-one mammals from these deposits are identified and grouped under the name Ben Franklin local fauna. Fossils and radiocarbon dates indicate that the age of the fauna is Late Wisconsin

Are Electronic Data Bases a Viable Audit Research Tool? Practitioners\u27 Perceptions and Recommendations

An exciting new service for the practicing audit professional is the creation of financial data bases usable for electronic research. Over the past ten years, service companies have compiled data bases of financial data and other information. Service companies make their products available through subscription to clients who want easy and instant access to data which be helpful in the decision making process. All of the Big 8 accounting firms are now subscribers to one of more of these services. They, in turn, provide access to their local offices where telephone communication facilities permit. In an attempt to determine what use is made of public access data bases in the auditing process, the authors conducted a national survey of 469 offices of Big 8 firms. The results of the survey and some suggestions for practitioners which surfaced in the responses are discussed in this article. A Landslide Climate Indicator from Machine Learning

In order to create a Landslide Hazard Index, we accessed rain, snow, and a dozen other variables from the National Climate Assessment Land Data Assimilation System. These predictors were converted to probabilities of landslide occurrence with XGBoost, a major machine-learning tool. The model was fitted with thousands of historical landslides from the Pacific Northwest Landslide Inventory (PNLI)

A Study of the Influence of Public and Private Christian High School Education on Academic Achievement and Spiritual Formation of College Students

This investigation compared the influence of public and Christian high schools on the spiritual formation and academic achievement of college students. Recent high school graduates who attend a private, liberal arts university in the southeastern United States responded to an online survey and interview questions related to the influence of one’s high school experience on spiritual formation and academic achievement. Significant differences were found between high school type and the type of problems faced by students and teachers, students’ ability to intelligently defend their faith, and students’ perceived ability to function in a diverse world. Significant differences favoring Christian school graduates were also found related to high school’s influence on taking college classes seriously, helping others, defending beliefs, sharing their faith, appreciation for other cultures, taking responsibility for actions, ability to receive constructive feedback, and being honest with oneself. Suggestions for educational improvement from both public and private high school graduates include: the need for hiring and retaining inspiring teachers who model moral behavior daily; the need for school personnel to listen to students and involve them in decision making; better problem-solving skills by school administrators; less favoritism shown to certain students by teachers and administrators; greater focus on authentic learning in real-world contexts; and the need for academic freedom to discuss critical issues without fear of retribution by teachers, administrators, or other students
