    High-Frequency Gravitational Waves from Spinning Non-Abelian Cosmic-Strings

    We investigated the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills system on a time-dependent non-diagonal cylindrical symmetric space-time. From the numerical investigation, wave-like solutions are found, consistent with the familiar string-like features. They possess an angle-deficit which depends on the initial form of the magnetic component of the YM field, i.e., the number of times it crosses the r-axis. The soliton-like behavior of the gravitational and YM waves show significant differences from the ones found in the Einstein-Maxwell system. The stability of the system is analyzed using the multiple-scale method. To first order a consistent set of equations is obtained.Comment: 26 pages in Revtex+ 10 eps figures.     Top-down control is not lost in the attentional blink: evidence from intact endogenous cuing.

    The attentional blink (AB) refers to the finding that performance on the second of two targets (T1 and T2) is impaired when the targets are presented at a target onset asynchrony (TOA) of less than 500 ms. One account of the AB assumes that the processing load of T1 leads to a loss of top-down control over stimulus selection. The present study tested this account by examining whether an endogenous spatial cue that indicates the location of a following T2 can facilitate T2 report even when the cue and T2 occur within the time window of the AB. Results from three experiments showed that endogenous cuing had a significant effect on T2 report, both during and outside of the AB; this cuing effect was modulated by both the cue-target onset asynchrony and by cue validity, while it was invariant to the AB. These results suggest that top-down control over target selection is not lost during the AB. © 2007 Springer-Verlag

    Good vibrations, bad vibrations: Oscillatory brain activity in the attentional blink

    The attentional blink (AB) is a deficit in reporting the second (T2) of two targets (T1, T2) when presented in close temporal succession and within a stream of distractor stimuli. The AB has received a great deal of attention in the past two decades because it allows to study the mechanisms that influence the rate and depth of information processing in various setups and therefore provides an elegant way to study correlates of conscious perception in supra-threshold stimuli. Recently evidence has accumulated suggesting that oscillatory signals play a significant role in temporally coordinating information between brain areas. This review focuses on studies looking into oscillatory brain activity in the AB. The results of these studies indicate that the AB is related to modulations in oscillatory brain activity in the theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. These modulations are sometimes restricted to a circumscribed brain area but more frequently include several brain regions. They occur before targets are presented as well as after the presentation of the targets. We will argue that the complexity of the findings supports the idea that the AB is not the result of a processing impairment in one particular process or brain area, but the consequence of a dynamic interplay between several processes and/or parts of a neural network

    BACKGROUND: For locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC), the recurrence rate after surgery and postoperative radiotherapy is between 20 and 40%, and the 5- year overall survival rate is similar to 50%. Presently, no markers exist to accurately predict treatment outcome. Expression of proteins in the human epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway has been reported as a prognostic marker in several types of cancer. METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of proteins in the EGFR pathway in HNSCC. For this purpose, we collected surgically resected tissue of 140 locally advanced head and neck cancer patients, all treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. RESULTS: In a multivariate analysis, expression of the phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) was significantly related to worse locoregional control (LRC; HR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.1-4.6; P = 0.03), independent of lymph node metastases (HR: 5.6, 95% CI: 1.2-27.4; P = 0.03) and extranodal spread (HR: 2.7; 95% CI: 1.2- 6.5; P = 0.02). In vitro clonogenic radiosensitivity assays confirmed that overexpression of PTEN resulted in increased radioresistance. CONCLUSION: Our study is the first report showing that expression of PTEN mediates radiosensitivity in vitro and that increased expression in advanced HNSCC predicts worse LRC.     Occipital gamma activation during Vipassana meditation

    Long-term Vipassana meditators sat in meditation vs. a control rest (mind-wandering) state for 21 min in a counterbalanced design with spontaneous EEG recorded. Meditation state dynamics were measured with spectral decomposition of the last 6 min of the eyes-closed silent meditation compared to control state. Meditation was associated with a decrease in frontal delta (1–4 Hz) power, especially pronounced in those participants not reporting drowsiness during meditation. Relative increase in frontal theta (4–8 Hz) power was observed during meditation, as well as significantly increased parieto-occipital gamma (35–45 Hz) power, but no other state effects were found for the theta (4–8 Hz), alpha (8–12 Hz), or beta (12–25 Hz) bands. Alpha power was sensitive to condition order, and more experienced meditators exhibited no tendency toward enhanced alpha during meditation relative to the control task. All participants tended to exhibit decreased alpha in association with reported drowsiness. Cross-experimental session occipital gamma power was the greatest in meditators with a daily practice of 10+ years, and the meditation-related gamma power increase was similarly the strongest in such advanced practitioners. The findings suggest that long-term Vipassana meditation contributes to increased occipital gamma power related to long-term meditational expertise and enhanced sensory awareness

    Mindfulness as a General Ingredient of Successful Psychotherapy

    In this chapter I present a psychological conceptualization of mindfulness based on constructs in common therapeutic parlance. Taking a functional approach based on the skills and recognitions patients gain from the exercises commonly used in mindfulness training and avoiding exotic and cryptic language, it makes apparent both the commonality mindfulness has with modalities therapists will be already using in their clinical practice and the ways in which it may add something new and therapeutically useful. It also describes the evolutionary pressures that have shaped the biological imperatives driving the default movements of attention that result in day-to-day experience being experienced as less than pleasant; defaults that result in both the need for, and the challenge of cultivating mindfulness. So, while the instructions and narrative within which these principles are introduced into therapy will need to be adapted to the patient’s background and circumstances, an understanding and grounding in the principles enables the therapist both to skillfully make these adaptations to the training exercises and to make them immediately sensible to the patient, including the challenges they will meet in getting started
