The Rhetorical Principles of Cicero in the 16th/17th Century Humanistic Education in Riga
Darbs risina jautÄjumu par zinÄÅ”anu pÄrnesi starp antÄ«kajiem laikiem un RÄ«gas humÄnistiem, kuru vÄrtÄ«bas atspoguļojas RÄ«gas Domskolas mÄcÄ«bu programmÄ 16. gs. TÄ uzrÄdÄs grÄmatÄ Libellus ethicus, kurÄ atrodami gan skolas noteikumi, gan tikumiska cilvÄka rÄ«cÄ«bas un vÄrtÄ«bu orientieri, un pÄc tam Johana RÄ«vija reformÄtÄs skolas mÄcÄ«bu programmÄ un runÄs, kas teiktas par godu Ŕīs skolas atklÄÅ”anai 1594. gadÄ un publicÄtas krÄjumÄ Orationes tres. Darbs ir sadalÄ«ts trÄ«s daļÄs, kur pirmajÄ tiek analizÄts un konstruÄts Cicerona ideÄlÄ oratora modelis, reducÄjot viÅa retoriskos principus uz vÄrtÄ«bu prizmu. OtrajÄ daÄ¼Ä tiek izskatÄ«ts humÄnisms un meklÄti tÄ saskares punkti ar Cicerona vÄrtÄ«bu orientieriem, bet treÅ”ajÄ daÄ¼Ä izskatÄ«ta RÄ«gas humÄnistiskÄ izglÄ«tÄ«ba 16.gs., meklÄjot skolas idejiskos avotus gan humÄnismÄ, gan Cicerona nostÄdnÄs.The research paper analyses and addresses the transfer of the knowledge between ancient times and the humanists in Riga, the values of which are reflected in the curriculum of the Riga Dome School in the 16th century. This knowledge can be found in the book Libellus ethicus, which contains both school rules and guidelines for the actions and values of the ethical individual. The curriculum and speeches of Johannes Riviusā reformed school in the honour of the opening of this school in 1594 (Orationes tres) also serves as the source of information and analysis. The paper is divided into three parts, first one analyses and constructs Cicero's ideal orator model, reducing his rhetorical principles to the prism of values. The second part examines humanism and searches for its points of contact with Cicero's values, but the third part examines Riga's humanistic education in the 16th century, looking for the school's ideological sources in both humanism and Cicero's principles
Dialectics of Clarity and Obscurity in Platoās Dialogues
Bakalaura darbs risina jautÄjumus par skaidrÄ«bas izteikÅ”anu caur neskaidrÄ«bu un Platona saules metaforu kÄ filozofisku nepiecieÅ”amÄ«bu pÄc paliekoÅ”as neskaidrÄ«bas, kas paplaÅ”ina filozofijas diskursa robežas, pieļaujot metaforisku pieredzÄjumu kÄ Ärpus-valodisku filozofijas elementu. Darba mÄrÄ·is ir noskaidrot un pierÄdÄ«t, ka fundamentÄla skaidrÄ«bas un neskaidrÄ«bas metaforisko attiecÄ«bu pÄrvÄrtÄÅ”ana caur dialektisku opozÄ«ciju HÄrakleita valodas metaforiskajam lietojumam veido un nosaka filozofijas diskursa robežas Platona darbos. Darba hipotÄze paredz pierÄdÄ«t, ka Platona metafora nav izvÄlÄta, lai netieÅ”i simbolizÄtu Labo vienkÄrÅ”Äkai izpratnei, bet gan lai parÄdÄ«tu, ka Labais mums ir tverams nevis tieÅ”Ä veidÄ, bet vienÄ«gi tÄpat kÄ to attÄlo Platons ā caur metaforu. MÄrÄ·a sasniegÅ”anai tiek veikta Platona Valsts V-VII grÄmatu un dialoga Kratils analÄ«ze, saattiecinot to ar HÄrakleita fragmentu interpretÄciju. The bachelor's thesis approaches obscurity as a means to express a clarity and the Platoās metaphor of sun as a philosophical necessity for a permanent obscurity which broadens a limits of the philosophical discourse, allowing to interpret metaphorical experience as an extralinguistic element of philosophy. The aim of the thesis is to establish and to prove that the fundamental revaluation of metaphorical relations between clarity and obscurity in dialectical opposition to Heraclitus metaphorical use of the language forms and determines the limits of philosophical discourse in Platoās dialogues. The hypothesis is to prove that Platoās use of the metaphor of sun is not chosen to indirectly symbolize the idea the Good for an easier understanding but to show that the Good is perceptible strictly in the same way as Plato depicts it ā through a metaphor. To achieve the predetermined goals, the thesis consists of an analysis of Platoās Republic (books V-VII) and Cratylus and combining these results with an established interpretation of the fragments of Heraclitus
The unity of the virtues in Plato's socratic dialogues
The bachelor's thesis work āThe Unity of the virtues in Plato's socratic dialoguesā looks at one of Socrates's paradoxes ā how is it possible that individual virtues (courage, justice, temperance and wisdom) are segregated from one another and at the same time every virtue is formed from the same thing ā moral knowledge. This problem reveals itself most directly in two of Plato's dialogues, Protagoras and Laches, and so the mentioned works were used as the basis for this analysis. The bachelor's thesis work proves that it is possible to form a coherent view and solve such contradictions, that are based on forming the unity of virtues through knowledge. The main basic interpretations that were used in this work are the positions of Gregory Vlastos, Thomas C. Brickhouse and Nicholas Smith, which I tried to mutually harmonize
