    Hybrid in vitro diffusion cell for simultaneous evaluation of hair and skin decontamination: temporal distribution of chemical contaminants

    Most casualty or personnel decontamination studies have focused on removing contaminants from the skin. However, scalp hair and underlying skin are the most likely areas of contamination following airborne exposure to chemicals. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions of contaminants with scalp hair and underlying skin using a hybrid in vitro diffusion cell model. The in vitro hybrid test system comprised “curtains” of human hair mounted onto sections of excised porcine skin within a modified diffusion cell. The results demonstrated that hair substantially reduced underlying scalp skin contamination and that hair may provide a limited decontamination effect by removing contaminants from the skin surface. This hybrid test system may have application in the development of improved chemical incident response processes through the evaluation of various hair and skin decontamination strategies.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Enveloping Sophisticated Tools into Process-Centered Environments

    We present a tool integration strategy based on enveloping pre-existing tools without source code modifications or recompilation, and without assuming an extension language, application programming interface, or any other special capabilities on the part of the tool. This Black Box enveloping (or wrapping) idea has existed for a long time, but was previously restricted to relatively simple tools. We describe the design and implementation of, and experimentation with, a new Black Box enveloping facility intended for sophisticated tools --- with particular concern for the emerging class of groupware applications

    Guidelines for autopsy investigation of sudden cardiac death: 2017 update from the Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology.

    Although sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of the most important modes of death in Western countries, pathologists and public health physicians have not given this problem the attention it deserves. New methods of preventing potentially fatal arrhythmias have been developed and the accurate diagnosis of the causes of SCD is now of particular importance. Pathologists are responsible for determining the precise cause and mechanism of sudden death but there is still considerable variation in the way in which they approach this increasingly complex task. The Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology has developed these guidelines, which represent the minimum standard that is required in the routine autopsy practice for the adequate investigation of SCD. The present version is an update of our original article, published 10 years ago. This is necessary because of our increased understanding of the genetics of cardiovascular diseases, the availability of new diagnostic methods, and the experience we have gained from the routine use of the original guidelines. The updated guidelines include a detailed protocol for the examination of the heart and recommendations for the selection of histological blocks and appropriate material for toxicology, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular investigation. Our recommendations apply to university medical centers, regionals hospitals, and all healthcare professionals practicing pathology and forensic medicine. We believe that their adoption throughout Europe will improve the standards of autopsy practice, allow meaningful comparisons between different communities and regions, and permit the identification of emerging patterns of diseases causing SCD. Finally, we recommend the development of regional multidisciplinary networks of cardiologists, geneticists, and pathologists. Their role will be to facilitate the identification of index cases with a genetic basis, to screen appropriate family members, and ensure that appropriate preventive strategies are implemented

    A review of bioanalytical techniques for evaluation of cannabis (Marijuana, weed, Hashish) in human hair

    Cannabis products (marijuana, weed, hashish) are among the most widely abused psychoactive drugs in the world, due to their euphorigenic and anxiolytic properties. Recently, hair analysis is of great interest in analytical, clinical, and forensic sciences due to its non-invasiveness, negligible risk of infection and tampering, facile storage, and a wider window of detection. Hair analysis is now widely accepted as evidence in courts around the world. Hair analysis is very feasible to complement saliva, blood tests, and urinalysis. In this review, we have focused on state of the art in hair analysis of cannabis with particular attention to hair sample preparation for cannabis analysis involving pulverization, extraction and screening techniques followed by confirmatory tests (e.g., GC–MS and LC–MS/MS). We have reviewed the literature for the past 10 years’ period with special emphasis on cannabis quantification using mass spectrometry. The pros and cons of all the published methods have also been discussed along with the prospective future of cannabis analysis

    Degradation of zopiclone during storage of spiked and authentic whole blood and matching dried blood spots

    Z-drugs such as zopiclone are increasingly involved in forensic cases. Its degradation occurs in solvents and biological fluids. It is assumed that hydrolysis largely accounts for the breakdown of zopiclone in aqueous media. Therefore, a stability study in blood at different storage conditions (-20, 4, 20, and 40A degrees C) was performed to establish changes of the drug's concentration with time, also including its degradation product 2-amino-5-chloropyridine (ACP). As removal of the aqueous phase may stabilize molecules that are prone to hydrolysis, it was assessed whether the use of dried blood spots (DBS) may be an alternative for storing and analyzing zopiclone and ACP. Spiked and authentic blood samples and corresponding DBS were analyzed using fully validated LC-MS/MS assays. There was agreement between the measurement of zopiclone from either blood or matching DBS in freshly prepared samples. Results showed that zopiclone was unstable in blood at all storage temperatures except at -20A degrees C. Stability of zopiclone in spiked and authentic blood was increased in DBS compared to matching blood samples stored at the same condition. About 85 % of the initial concentration of zopiclone was still intact in DBS on day 8 at 20A degrees C. ACP was formed from zopiclone in equimolar amounts in both media. Therefore, determination of both zopiclone and ACP may be helpful to estimate the initial concentration in both media. Pre-analytical conditions have a major impact on the recovery of zopiclone from blood. With respect to its known advantages, DBS can be recommended as a valuable alternative for the determination of zopiclone from blood

    A User Experience Questionnaire for VR Locomotion: Formulation and Preliminary Evaluation

    When evaluating virtual reality (VR) locomotion techniques, the user experience metrics that are used are usually either focused on specific experiential dimensions or based on non-standardised, subjective reporting. The field would benefit from a standard questionnaire for evaluating the general user experience of VR locomotion techniques. This paper presents a synthesised user experience questionnaire for VR locomotion, which is called the VR Locomotion Experience Questionnaire (VRLEQ). It comprises the Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ) and the System Usability Scale (SUS) survey. The results of the VRLEQ’s application in a comparative, empirical study (n=26) of three prevalent VR locomotion techniques are described. The questionnaire’s content validity is assessed at a preliminary level based on the correspondence between the questionnaire items and the qualitative results from the study’s semi-structured interviews. VRLEQ’s experiential dimensions’ scoring corresponded well with the semi-structured interview remarks and effectively captured the experiential qualities of each VR locomotion technique. The VRLEQ results facilitated and quantified comparisons between the techniques and enabled an understanding of how the techniques performed in relation to each other.acceptedVersio
