Status of tuna fishery in Minicoy, Lakshadweep

    Get PDF
The status of tuna fishery at Minicoy is discussed based on the data for the period 1989 -'99. Pole and line using livebaits and troll operate for its fishery of which the former contribute more than 90% of the total tuna catch. The total tuna catch fluctuated from 3071 in 1991 to 1,2431 in 1995 with an average of 8641. The effort in boat days varied from 2,265 in 1996 to 3,896 in 1989 with an average of 2,915. The C/E ranged from 152.2 kg in 1991 to 408.8 kg in 1995 coinciding with the lowest and highest catches respectively. In troll the catch ranged from 91 in 1997 to 281 in 1994 and C/E varied from 8.5 kg in 1997 to 27.7 kg in 1994 corresponding with the lowest and highest catches respectively. Though the pole and line units are operated from September to May in general, the success of tuna fishery depend upon the higher catches in two or three months

    Get PDF
During routine visit to the Mottaigopuram fish landing centre at Thoothukudi on 27.7.2015 and on 20.10.2015, five numbers of seahorses were collected from the fish catch kept for auctioning. These were caught in indigenous trawl operated along the near shore sea grass beds at Thoothukudi. This gear mainly targets juveniles of prawn (especially Penaeus semisulcatus), crabs, cephalopods and fishes. Occasionally stray numbers of seahorses are also caught. The species obtained in the present collections were Hippocampus fuscus, H. trimaculatus and H. spinosissimus

Economics of troll line operation during monsoon in Minicoy, Lakshadweep

    Get PDF
The Economics of troll line operation during monsoon is given based on the study carried out in 1999. The average initial investment of a troll line unit 5 m OAL with outboard engine of9.9.HP) was found to be Rs.91 , 000/-. The average share of a unit was 616 kg when the fuel was also supplied by the owner along with the craft, outboard engine and gear realising a revenue of RS.28 ,880/-. But the share was 462 kg when the fuel was not supplied realising a gross income ofRs. 21,660/-. The gross profit in the former case was Rs.17, 880/- whereas in the latter case, it was gross income itself indicating the better profitability of the lattersystem

Indigenous substitutes for "Lignum vitae" for making stern bearings for fishing boats

    Get PDF
Difficulties are very often encountered in selecting proper material for making stern bearings for fishing boats. Conventional materials such as white metal, bronze etc. wear out too fast also causing considerable wear to the propeller shaft. Lignum-vitae, a natural wood commonly used for this purpose, is not available on a commercial scale in our country. Results of trials carried out to find out suitable substitutes for lignum-vitae from among indigenous timbers are presented in this paper

Stomach content analysis of the Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier) from Calicut, Kerala

    Get PDF
The food and feeding of the Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta was studied from Calicut based on 1,551 fishes ranging in size from 100 to 280 mm total length (TL) collected from both multi-day trawlers and ring net during the period January to December 2006. There was a preponderance of empty stomachs in all the months. The dominant food item was copepod. Sand and foraminiferans also formed part of the stomach content. The fish, Bregmaceros sp. was noticed for the first time in the adult mackerel

Impact of ring net on the mackerel fishery at Calicut

    Get PDF
With the introduction of ring net, there was considerable improvement in the mackerel fishery. The mackerel landing was almost fully contributed by ring net. During post-ring net period,16684 manpower brought 970 tonnes of mackerel with a catch per manpower of 58.14 kg. Due to the small mesh size of ring net and their better efficiency, the gear can cause over fishing and hence the fishery has to be watched closely in the coming years
