    An apparatus for quantification of light and temperature cutting ability of curtains

    An apparatus has been designed and developed to measure the light cutting/absorbing ability of curtains and to provide useful information on their temperature cutting ability. The apparatus is provided with various light sources with light, temperature and humidity detectors. The reproducibility of results, and effect of intensity of light (MBTL light source) on light and temperature cutting ability of six different fabric samples have been studied. The light and temperature cutting ability of the knitted fabric is found to be lower than that of woven and black out curtain fabric samples

    Development of fabric smoothness tester

    An instrument has been designed and developed to measure the smoothness behavior of finished cotton fabrics. The instrument is based on pendulum principle. The weight (hang on string) comprises a frictionless wheel movable along arc shaped platform. The platform acts as a sample holder. When the weight is subjected to push, it swings back and forth in the platform. The amplitude of the swing reduces due to friction of the fabric. The amplitude is inversely proportional to the friction or roughness of the fabric. Various types of finished cotton fabrics are tested on the developed instrument. The results are compared with Kawabata system to verify the working of instrument. These results are also compared with the bending length and crease recovery behavior of the particular fabric sample. It is found that the lesser the bending length the more will be the smoothness. If the crease recovery angle is high, the fabric will be smoother. One way analysis of variance has been applied to find out effect of different processes on fabric surface smoothness property

    Before dyeing, woven cotton fabrics have been passed through different pretreatments like desizing, scouring, bleaching and mercerising to enhance quality. In every treatment cotton fabric is treated with different chemicals and mechanical processes. After these treatments, the feel of the fabric has been changed. The change in feel or in terms of the hand value of treated fabrics were analysed by determining the bending length, crease recovery angle, SEM, FTIR, surface roughness and smoothness properties. Other physical properties viz. the tear and tensile strength were also evaluated. Fabric surface roughness and smoothness were determined using the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) and digital image processing method. Using MATLAB software, digital image processing techniques were used to evaluate the roughness index. The study revealed that the pretreatment process alters the fabric surface. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) was carried out using SPSS software in order to establish the relationship between the pretreatment process effect on the bending length, smoothness and crease recovery angle.W celu poprawy jakości tkaniny bawełniane przed barwieniem poddawane są obróbce wstępnej składającej się z następujących etapów: odklejanie, szorowanie, wybielanie i merceryzowanie. Podczas każdego etapu tkanina bawełniana jest poddawana różnym procesom chemicznym i mechanicznym. Przebadano tkaniny SEM, FTIR, określono chropowatości powierzchni i gładkość. Oceniono również wytrzymałość na rozdarcie i rozciąganie. Chropowatość i gładkość powierzchni tkaniny określono przy użyciu Kawabata Evaluation System (KES), metody cyfrowego przetwarzania obrazu i oprogramowania MATLAB. Badanie ujawniło, że proces obróbki wstępnej zmienia powierzchnię tkaniny. Wyniki badań poddano analizie statystycznej

    Transformation of <em>Kantha</em> Traditional Embroidery: As fabric painting

    720-725Rising concern in traditional Indian embroideries for their time consuming techniques and out dated look and reaching the art of painting at its highest degree of excellence, demands for revival of traditional Indian embroideries. These require bringing them into contemporary look and developed through faster techniques. Fabric painting is an innovative, economical and time saving technique as compare to the embroidery. Present study was conducted for transforming Kantha traditional embroidery designs for fabric painting on jacket for its revival at Hisar, India. Fifteen motifs were explored from market survey, 3 designs were developed and selected from them and finally three placement-design combinations were selected for developing final products. Six jackets were developed, i.e., three with embroidery and three with painting. On the basis of experts’ preferences for developed jackets on various parameters, fabric painting technique was most preferred technique on the basis of overall appearance was considered best. The study will serve guidelines for a new designer to develop articles of same look from traditional embroidery technique with less time consuming techniques. It will open a new vista for women entrepreneur to make low cost articles with great demand. It will also enhance aesthetic beauty of traditional Kantha embroidery
