The Wisdom in Folly: An Examination of William Shakespeare\u27s Fools in Twelfth Night and King Lear
This thesis explores the complexities to be found in the characters of Lear\u27s Fool from King Lear and Feste from Twelfth Night. It begins with an investigation of the history behind the taxonomy of fools that William Shakespeare created in his works. The rest of the thesis is devoted to examining the many facets of the two aforementioned fools, with the goal of discovering just how important and influential they are to their respective plots and to the world of literature. Finally, there is a brief coda that explores the other striking similarities that the two plays have in common
Sub-ballistic behavior in quantum systems with L\'evy noise
We investigate the quantum walk and the quantum kicked rotor in resonance
subjected to noise with a L\'evy waiting time distribution. We find that both
systems have a sub-ballistic wave function spreading as shown by a power-law

Optimizing Delay Discounting Procedures
The purpose of the current research is twofold: 1) to identify the causes and typical frequencies of nonsystematic data in three commonly used discounting tasks, and 2) to test and optimize these delay discounting procedures to reduce the amount of non-systematic data that is produced. Experiment 1 will be the first study to explicitly examine the frequency of nonsystematic data obtained across these three procedures, which will identify which method is the most reliable procedure for producing systematic data. While many of these procedures have been widely used, the procedural parameters (e.g., delay range, monetary amounts) have varied greatly across studies so an accurate estimate when these details are held constant is currently unknown. Using participants’ feedback, we will determine the most typical causes of nonsystematic data in these tasks. In Experiment 2, the directions for each task will be modified in accordance with participants’ feedback in Experiment 1. We will then assess discounting rates with these modified procedures to generate a new estimate of the frequency of nonsystematic data. This will allow us to compare the rates of non-systematic data from Experiment 1 to those in Experiment 2 to identify the efficacy of our instructional manipulation in generating the most valid data as possible
The Norad Programme in Arts and Cultural Education. A Mid-Term Review of the Programme Period 2006-2008/9
This report is a review of the Norad Programme in Arts and Cultural Education (ACE). ACE is a programme for cooperation between institutions for cultural education in the South and partners in Norway, established to contribute to the strengthening of cultural education institutions in the south and to the professionalization of artists and art forms.
In the programme period 2006-2008/9, seven projects have received funding, benefitting students from Mali, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. By the end of the programme period, if all plans are successful, 50 students, close to half of them women, will have received a degree in Dance, Music, Drama, Ethnomusicology, or Visual Cultural Studies. A central element of the programme is to encourage students to work at their home institution (or at another cultural institution in their home country) upon completion of their degree. This will contribute to the strengthening of cultural education institutions in the south. The review finds that four to five of the seven projects are likely to fulfil this goal.
The review concludes that the programme has been economically efficient and that it should be continued. The review recommends that in the future, the programme should:
- Fund post-studies employment at institutions in the south
- Reduce scholarships during studies/fieldwork in the south
- Clarify responsibilities of each institution
- Revise the accounting system and streamline conditions
- Consider the possibility of research components
- Consider the possibility for south-south cooperation
- Introduce web-based information sharin
The EU’s Proposed Reform of Directors’ Duties and the Missing Link to Soft Law
In this paper, we investigate whether reform of EU company law is needed to make corporate governance more sustainable. We also consider some issues to which the EU proposals on company law and sustainability paid scant attention, such as the role of corporate governance codes and other types of soft law, mainly of international origin, in promoting sustainable governance. In addition, we underline that in recent years the EU has adopted several measures which offer better prospects for sustainable governance than the reform of directors' duties the EU is currently debating. We conclude that the failure to take corporate governance codes and the existing regulatory framework into account could seriously impair pending reforms of directors' duties and their link to sustainability
Cu_{2}O as nonmagnetic semiconductor for spin transport in crystalline oxide electronics
We probe spin transport in Cu_{2}O by measuring spin valve effect in
La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co and
La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial
heterostructures. In La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co systems we find that a
fraction of out-of-equilibrium spin polarized carrier actually travel across
the Cu_{2}O layer up to distances of almost 100 nm at low temperature. The
corresponding spin diffusion length dspin is estimated around 40 nm.
Furthermore, we find that the insertion of a SrTiO_{3} tunneling barrier does
not improve spin injection, likely due to the matching of resistances at the
interfaces. Our result on dspin may be likely improved, both in terms of
Cu_{2}O crystalline quality and sub-micrometric morphology and in terms of
device geometry, indicating that Cu_{2}O is a potential material for efficient
spin transport in devices based on crystalline oxides.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure
Critical Field of MGB2 : Crossover from Clean to Dirty Regimes
We have studied the upper critical field, Bc2, in poly-crystalline MgB2
samples in which disorder was varied in a controlled way to carry selectively p
and s bands from clean to dirty limit. We have found that the clean regime
survives when p bands are dirty and s bands are midway between clean and dirty.
In this framework we can explain the anomalous behaviour of Al doped samples,
in which Bc2 decreases as doping increases.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
The Crossover beteween Aslamazov-Larkin and Short Wavelength Fluctuations Regimes in HTS Conductivity Experiments
We present paraconductivity (AL) measurements in three different high
temperature superconductors: a melt textured sample, a
epitaxial thin film and a highly textured
tape. The crossovers between different temperature
regimes in excess conductivity have been analysed. The Lawrence-Doniach (LD)
crossover, which separates the 2D and 3D regimes, shifts from lower to higher
temperatures as the compound anisotropy decreases. Once the LD crossover is
overcome, the fluctuation conductivity of the three compounds shows the same
universal behaviour: for all the curves bend down
according to the law. This asymptotic behaviour was
theoretically predicted previously for the high temperature region where the
