On Expectations-Driven Business Cycles in Economies with Production Externalities: A Comment

Eusepi (2009, International Journal of Economic Theory 5, pp. 9-23) analytically finds that a one-sector real business cycle model may exhibit positive co-movement between consumption and investment when the equilibrium wage-hours locus is positively-sloped and steeper than the household's labor supply curve. However, we show that this condition does not imply expectations-driven business cycles will emerge in Eusepi's model. Specifically, a positive news shock about future productivity improvement leads to an aggregate recession whereby output, employment, consumption and investment all fall in the announcement period.Expectations-Driven Business Cycles; Production Externalities.

El presente trabajo de investigación representa un intento crítico para abordar el concepto de continuidad en el pensamiento artístico basado en el estudio de caso de una obra artística única en su tipo, el Ciclo Cremaster de Matthew Barney. Es una producción artística notoria, que ha suscitado mucho debate y dividido las opiniones de los críticos y del público, sin llegar, sin embargo a concluir de manera definitiva el proceso artístico del autor. La hipótesis que manejamos es la de contemplar al Ciclo Cremaster como una especie de manifiesto contemporáneo de los sistemas desarrollados por el filósofo y libre pensador Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), cuyos tratados sobre el cosmos, la memoria, la imaginación, la magia y la imagen se condensan en una “maquina mágica de la memoria” que podría ser una significante precursora del trabajo de Barney.This research work represents a critical attempt to address the concept of continuity in artistic thought based on the case study of a unique artistic work of its kind, the Matthew Barney Cremaster Cycle. It is a well-known artistic production, which has provoked a lot of debate and divided the opinions of the critics and the public, without arriving, however, to definitively conclude the author’s artistic process. The hypothesis that we handle is to contemplate the Cremaster Cycle as a kind of contemporary manifesto of the systems developed by the philosopher and free thinker Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), whose treatises on the cosmos, memory, imagination, magic and the image is condensed into a “magic memory machine” that could be a significant forerunner of Barney’s work

El Mago (de) Matthew Barney: Influencias Renacentistas en el Ciclo Cremaster

In this article we will try to offer a new interpretation of the video art work of the artist Matthew Barney (California, 1967) the Cremaster Cycle, approaching a more humanistic and less biological vision, the last one being the principal study aspect for the experts on Matthew Barney. We will focus on the character of the Magician, a key figure in the Cremaster Cycle. The Magician lighting the pass to a possible interpretation of the Cycle in Renaissance key, the magician character while being a personification of aesthetic- artistic interests of Matthew Barney is also an approximation to the ideal of the Renaissance man: philosopher, magician, healer. Alter-ego of Matthew Barney, the escape artist Harry Houdini represents (and through him all other magical branches) a possible link with the powerful magician Renaissance described by the philosopher Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), able to metamorphose, influence in the sensitivities of his objects, through self-knowledge and knowledge of the Divine.El presente artículo trata de ofrecer una nueva interpretación acerca de la obra de video-arte Ciclo Cremaster del artista Matthew Barney (1967), aproximándonos a una visión más humanística y menos biológica ya que esta última ha sido profusamente estudiada por diversos especialistas en su obra. Nos hemos centrado en el personaje del Mago, figura clave en el Ciclo Cremaster. El Mago ilumina el camino hacia una posible interpretación del ciclo en clave renacentista, siendo el personaje del mago al mismo tiempo una personificación de los intereses estético-artísticos de Matthew Barney como una aproximación al ideal del hombre renacentista: filósofo, mago, curandero. Linking the brain and bone through fat

Over the past years, bone and adipose tissue have gained interest from researchers in the light of their secretory profiles, being able to produce active molecules, with the final effect of regulating energy homeostasis. Both adipocytes and osteoblasts originate in the pluripotent mesenchymal stem cell and this common origin has been proposed as the core of the fat-bone relationship. The central nervous system might be the third player in this association, capable of integrating signals. Numerous adipose tissue secreted factors that influence energy homeostasis and bone have been described: leptin, adiponectin, lipocalin 2, and inflammatory cytokines (e.g. IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α). Similarly, osteocalcin, the most abundant bone protein, has been shown to elicit numerous central and peripheral endocrine functions. In this paper, we provide a review of the current literature regarding the bone-adipose tissue-central nervous system axis and a brief description of the several underlying molecular mechanisms

Ekspresja adiponektyny w otyłości trzewnej jest istotnym wyznacznikiem insulinooporności w otyłości olbrzymiej

Introduction: Visceral adiposity is associated with decreased serum adiponectin levels, peripheral resistance to insulin and an increased risk of cardio-metabolic complications. However, the link between adiponectin expression in visceral adipose tissue (VAT), its serum levels and metabolic protection is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the adiponectin gene expression in VAT and clinical and metabolic parameters in patients with severe obesity. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that included 51 severely obese patients (age 43.24±11.29 years, BMI 45.13±8.67 kg/m2), extensively evaluated clinically and biologically (metabolic tests, serum adiponectin measurements, HOMA-IR) before bariatric surgery. Omental adipose tissue was sampled during the intervention and the relative quantification of adiponectin gene expression was performed by real-time PCR, using beta-actin as reference gene. Results. Adiponectin mRNA in VAT was significantly higher in obese insulin-sensitive patients than in the rest of obese patients (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with HOMA-IR (r =-0.354, p=0.016) and uric acid (r =-0.304, p=0.045). After adjustment for gender, TG/HDL ratio and uric acid, adiponectin expresion (β= -0.439, p=0.001), waist circumference (β=0.467, p=0.001) and serum adiponectin (β =-0.339, p=0.011) remained significantly associated with HOMA-IR, together explaining more than 50% of its variation. Conclusions. In severely obese patients, adiponectin gene expression in VAT is negatively correlated with serum levels of uric acid and is an independent determinant, together with anthropometric parameters of visceral obesity and serum adiponectin levels, of insulin resistance.Wstęp: Otyłość trzewna związana jest ze zmniejszonym stężeniem adiponektyny w surowicy krwi, obwodową opornością na działanie insuliny oraz ze zwiększonym ryzykiem powikłań sercowo-metabolicznych. Jednak związek między ekspresją adiponektyny w trzewnej tkance tłuszczowej, jej stężeniem w surowicy krwi a ochroną metaboliczną jest kwestią sporną. Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie związku między ekspresją genu adiponektyny w trzewnej tkance tłuszczowej a klinicznymi i metabolicznymi parametrami pacjentów ze znaczną otyłością. Materiał i metody: To przekrojowe badanie obejmowało 51 znacznie otyłych pacjentów (wiek 43,24 ± 11,29 roku, BMI 45,13 ± 8,67 kg/m2), szczegółowo ocenionych pod względem klinicznym i biologicznym (testy metaboliczne, pomiary stężenia adiponektyny w surowicy krwi, wskaźnik HOMA-IR) przed operacją bariatryczną. Podczas operacji pobrano tkankę tłuszczową sieci. Względna ocena ilościowa ekspresji genu adiponektyny była przeprowadzona metodą PCR w czasie rzeczywistym. Wyniki: Poziom mRNA adiponektyny w trzewnej tkance tłuszczowej był znacząco wyższy u otyłych pacjentów wrażliwych na insulinę niż u pozostałych otyłych pacjentów (p &lt; 0,05) oraz ujemnie skorelowany ze wskaźnikiem HOMA-IR (r = –0,354, p = 0,016) i kwasem moczowym (r = –0,304, p = 0.045). Po uwzględnieniu płci, wskaźnika TG/HDL i kwasu moczowego, ekspresja adiponektyny (β = –0,439, p = 0,001), obwód talii (β = 0,467, p = 0,001) i poziom adiponektyny w surowicy krwi (β = –0,339, p = 0,011) pozostały istotnie związane ze wskaźnikiem HOMA-IR, łącznie wyjaśniając ponad 50% jego wariancji. Wnioski: W przypadku znacznie otyłych pacjentów ekspresja genu adiponektyny w trzewnej tkance tłuszczowej jest ujemnie skorelowana ze stężeniem kwasu moczowego w surowicy krwi i razem z antropometrycznymi parametrami otyłości trzewnej oraz stężeniem adiponektyny w surowicy krwi jest niezależnym wyznacznikiem insulinooporności

El Ciclo Cremaster de Matthew Barney y las Influencias de Giordano Bruno

La presente tesis representa un intento crítico para abordar el concepto de continuidad en el pensamiento artístico, de su interdisciplinaridad y de su valor artístico basado en el estudio de caso de una obra artística única en su tipo. El Ciclo Cremaster de Matthew Barney es una producción artística notoria y enigmática al mismo tiempo, que ha suscitado mucho debate y dividido las opiniones de los críticos y del público, sin llegar, sin embargo, a concluir de manera definitiva el proceso artístico de Matthew Barney, ni los significados de la obra, ni su impacto en el público. Sin renunciar a las interpretaciones ya existentes y apoyándonos en ellas, esta investigación propone abordar una nueva dimensión al análisis de la riqueza del Ciclo Cremaster. Esta nueva perspectiva se orienta a la interpretación de la obra integrándola dentro de la época renacentista, buscando parecido tanto a nivel de ideas y contenido como en las formas que ilustran dichos planteamientos. La hipótesis que manejamos es la de contemplar al Ciclo Cremaster como una especie de manifiesto contemporáneo de los sistemas desarrollados por los eruditos neo-platónicos durante el Renacimiento, y en particular por el filósofo y libre pensador Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), cuyos tratados sobre el cosmos, la memoria, la imaginación, la magia y la imagen se condensan en una “maquina mágica de la memoria” que podría ser una significante precursora del trabajo de Barney. El hecho de demostrar que pueden existir patrones que se repitan en la obra de estos dos personajes, aunque se desvirtúen los entornos originales, ayuda a reinsertar la vida renacentista dentro de la actualidad y pone bajo una interrogante la dirección lineal del tiempo y de la vida, optando por una visión cíclica de los mismos.Tesis Univ.
