    Get PDF
In This paper, we have investigated the proposed 8-channel WDM system transmitted over 100 km distance is amplified with EDFA-SOA post-amplifier configuration for different EDFA length. For different EDFA-SOA combination gives different results for different EDFAs length (5m, 10m, and 15m). The proposed EDFA-SOA post-amplifier improves the input power to the receiver subsystem. Performance of hybrid amplifiers (EDFA-SOA) has been analyzed for different EDFAs lengths by Q-factor, min BER rate, threshold, and height. Also, detail analysis of the performance of both the amplifiers combination for different lengths for a WDM network shows that EDFA-SOA amplifier combination give favorable results when EDFA length is small (5m)

Predicted Performance Bounds of Thermochromism Assisted Photon Transport for Efficient Solar Thermal Energy Storage

Efficient storage of solar thermal energy is still one of the major bottlenecks in realizing dispatchable solar thermal systems. Present work is a significant step in this direction, wherein, we propose, thermochromism assisted photon transport based optical charging for efficient latent heat storage. Seeding thermochromic nanoparticles into the phase change material (PCM) allows for dynamic control of PCM's optical properties - aiding deeper penetration of photons and hence significantly enhancing the photon-nanoparticle interactions. Moreover, carefully tailoring of transition temperature near the melting temperature allows for efficient non-radiative decay of the absorbed photon energy and that too under nearly thermostatic conditions. In particular, the present work serves to develop a mechanistic opto-thermal theoretical modelling framework to compute melting front progression, latent heat storage and sensible heat discharging capacities pertinent to thermochromism assisted photon transport. Moreover, to truly assess and quantify the benefits of the aforementioned charging route, a host of other possible charging routes (viz., thermal and non-thermochromic optical charging) have also been dealt with. Detailed analysis reveals that relative to the thermal charging route, thermochromism assisted optical charging offers significant enhancements in terms of melting front progression (approximately 152%) and latent heat storage capacity (approximately 167%). Overall, thermochromism assisted photon transport is a synergistic approach which allows for simultaneous collection and storage of solar energy at accelerated rates without requiring the PCM to be heated to high temperatures.Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, to be submitted to a Journa

Developmental persistent falcine sinus with cranium bifidum occultum, craniosynostosis, and associated anomalies: A unique case

    Get PDF
The falcine sinus is an intrauterine anatomic structure located in the falx cerebri that is closed after birth and persistence of thisembryologic falcine sinus is considered as a rare variation of the venous pathway which is associated with defect in the developmentof the straight sinus leading to formation of an alternate venous pathway served by the persistent falcine sinus. Cranium bifidumoccultum is another rare skull ossification disorder referred to as the Catlin mark characterized by ossification defects in theparietal bones. Many other associated anomalies can be seen with persistent falcine sinus apart from cranium bifidum occultumwhich include absent or dysplastic tentorium cerebelli, agenesis of the corpus callosum, apert syndrome, atretic occipital/parietalencephalocele, vein of galen malformation, osteogenesis imperfecta, and chiari malformation Type II. We describe a rare case of a10-year-old girl who presented with short stature, intermittent headache, and abnormal skull shape. On radiological examination, persistent falcine sinus was detected with large midline skull defect at the high parietal area. The straight sinus was absent, and therewas dysplastic tentorium cerebelli. In addition to these, craniosynostosis was also present with many other associated anomalies.Persistent falcine sinus and cranium bifidum occultum are very rare, and when found, they are associated with many anomaliesraising the possibility that they may represent the benign end of the same developmental spectrum. To the best of our knowledge, these constellations of anomalies have been reported in very few children

Development and Challenges in Sports: A Case Study of the Indian Cricket

    Get PDF
Cricket is the most popular game at present not in only in India but also in the Indian Subcontinent. The controversies and the ups and downs of the willow game have been the subject of discussion by the cricket chroniclers and the lovers of the game in times gone by. The present study aims at examining the level of motivation among players, nature and role of cooperation from academic institutions such as the college or the university, from the family, need for a different academic course structure for players and fairness in the selection process. Using the information through a sample of 320 student cricketers, the role of the University of Delhi in nurturing the talent and producing some outstanding cricketers of national and international levels has been probed. Absence of trainers along with commensurate infrastructure seems to be the bane in developing top cricketers in the Colleges and the Universities. Forced to give major part of their time to the sport, it is tough for the sportspersons to focus on academics. Continuous training and travel with consequent missed classes makes it tough to secure good credits in class attendance and internal assessment which results in adverse performance in semester examinations. The sports centric curriculum and sufficient credit for performance in sports with adequate, flexible teaching schedules, improved training and sports infrastructure in colleges and the universities in India can only raise the standard of cricket and other sports. The excessive use of antioxidant therapy: A possible cause of male infertility?

    Get PDF
Reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress are closely associated with various pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases, ageing and male infertility. Hence, antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, N‐acetyl cysteine, L‐carnitine and folic acid are regularly used in various treatment regimens to protect cells from the damage induced by free radicals. However, given their over‐the‐counter availability at unnaturally high concentrations and also the fact that they are commonly added to various food products, patients may run a risk of consuming excessive dosages of these compounds, which may then be toxic. The few studies that have assessed antioxidant overuse and the associated adverse effects found that large doses of dietary antioxidant supplements have varying—if any—therapeutic effects even though free radicals clearly damage cells—a phenomenon that has been termed the “antioxidant paradox.” Furthermore, overuse of antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, N‐acetyl cysteine may lead to reductive stress, which is reported to be as dangerous to cells as oxidative stress and can be the cause of diseases such as cancer or cardiomyopathy. Therefore, we feel that there is a need for more elaborate research to establish the clear benefits and risks involved in antioxidant therapy for male infertility.IS

Fourier analysis of nonlinear pendulum oscillations

    Get PDF
Since the times of Galileo, it is well-known that a simple pendulum oscillates harmonically for any sufficiently small angular amplitude. Beyond this regime and in absence of dissipative forces, the pendulum period increases with amplitude and then it becomes a nonlinear system. Here in this work, we make use of Fourier series to investigate the transition from linear to nonlinear oscillations, which is done by comparing the Fourier coefficient of the fundamental mode (i.e., that for the small-angle regime) to those corresponding to higher frequencies, for angular amplitudes up to 9 0 ∘. Contrarily to some previous works, our results reveal that the pendulum oscillations are not highly anharmonic for all angular amplitudes. This kind of analysis for the pendulum motion is of great pedagogical interest for both theoretical and experimental classes on this theme
