    Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy

    Get PDF
Two cases of a recently described entity, 'sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy,' occurring in Black males, are reported. Prominent cervical adenopathy was the main presenting feature in both. Histologically, these nodes were characterised by pronounced proliferation of sinus histiocytes which showed phagocytosis of blood cells, predominantly Iymphocytes. One of the patients has been followed up for 9 years and has remained clinically well despite persistence of the adenopathy. The importance of recognition of this condition is stressed in order to obviate unnecessarily radical therapy for a mistaken diagnosis of malignancy.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 451 (1974)

Lattice dielectric response of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} and of CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} from first principles

Structural, vibrational, and lattice dielectric properties of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are studied using density-functional theory within the local spin-density approximation, and the results are compared with those computed previously for CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12}. Replacing Ca with Cd is found to leave many calculated quantities largely unaltered, although significant differences do emerge in zone-center optical phonon frequencies and mode effective charges. The computed phonon frequencies of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment, and the computed lattice contribution to the intrinsic static dielectric constant (~60) also agrees exceptionally well with a recent optical absorption experiment. These results provide further support for a picture in which the lattice dielectric response is essentially conventional, suggesting an extrinsic origin for the anomalous low-frequency dielectric response recently observed in both materials.Comment: 5 pages; uses REVTEX macros. Complement activity in the cord blood of term neonates with the amniotic fluid infection syndrome

    No full text
Cord blood samples from 11 term neonates whose placentas showed histological changes typical of the amniotic fluid infection syndrome were analysed in order to determine haemolytic activity of the classic and alternative complement pathways and serum levels of complement proteins and immunoglobulins. Although the mean values of all these parameters were higher in this group than in an age-related control group, only classic haemolytic pathway activity was significantly elevated (P< 0,025)

Learning from leading women's experience:towards a sociological understanding

Conceptions of leadership draw largely on the leadership experiences of a limited population, and of those in a restricted range of organizational settings. This article begins to address some of these biases by examining the experiences of six leading women in differing sectors. In researching the `how' of leadership there emerges a web of four inter-related factors that connects these leaders to their community and that plays a foundational role in their lives: upbringing, environment, focus and networks and alliances. The ways in which leadership is experienced and constructed by women, the article therefore argues, can be made more sense of through a sociological lens, and raises questions about how tendencies in research sites lead to gendered and individualistic understandings of leadership. In illuminating the need to make the distinction between representations of leadership and our experience of leadership, the article concludes that leadership is not just about leading people, but is often pioneering and can include the leadership of ideas, communities, and the representation of issue

A measurement of the average longitudinal development profile of cosmic ray air showers between 10(17) and 10(18) eV

Copyright © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. The average extensive air shower longitudinal development profile is measured. Events between 1017 and 1018 eV recorded by the HiRes/MIA hybrid experiment are used for the average profile. Several functional forms are examined using this average profile. The best-fit parameters for the above functions are determined. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/523319/description#descriptio
