A MAN OF GREATNESS RETURNS TO HIS NATIVE OPATIJA
This report deals with a school project that prompted the organisation of the international
scientific symposium «Dr. Leo H. Sternbach: Life and Work of Valium Inventor» (Opatija,
Villa Angiolina,18th May 2006.), and the unveiling of the commemorative plaque on the
house in Opatija where Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, an eminent American scientist originating
from Opatija, spent his childhood.
The project was realised by the pupils of The Eugen Kumičić Grammar School in Opatija;
Ana Petrovčić, David Deszô, Dominik Pažin, Davor Dujmić, Marin Dujmić and Hrvoje
Tramontana during the 2005/6 academic year, as an assignment of the school history group.
The project stemmed from a special curriculum on the holocaust and human rights education
including the research into the history of pre-war Jewish community in Opatija, of which
the Sternbach family was a part. It was based on the research of original archive material,
biographic literature and the application of the historiographic method of oral history.
The project was expounded through PowerPoint presentation in the course of the symposium
during which both foreign and Croatian presenters shed light on facts pertaining to life and
scientific work of Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, emphasising his exceptional contribution to the
development of the medical science of the 20th century. On 18th May 2006, under the auspices
of Roche Croatia and the Town of Opatija, the scientific symposium “Dr. Leo Henryk
Sternbach: Life and Work of Valium Inventor” was held at the Villa Angiolina in Opatija.
Also, the unveiling of the commemorative plaque on the building at 114 Maršal Tito Street in
Opatija, where Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach spent his childhood was ceremoniously performed,
marking thus the perennial memory of this distinguished scientist (picture 14).U prikazu je riječ o školskom projektu kojim je potaknuto održavanje međunarodnoga
znanstvenog simpozija “Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach: Život i djelo izumitelja Valiuma” (Opatija,
dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, ugledni američki znanstvenik rodom iz Opatije, proveo djetinjstvo.
Projekt su realizirali učenici Gimnazije Eugena Kumičića u Opatiji: Ana Petrovčić, David
Dezsô, Dominik Pažin, Davor Dujmić, Marin Dujmić i Hrvoje Tramontana tijekom školske
godine 2005./06., u okviru rada povijesne grupe.
usmene povijesti (oral history).
djelovanja dr. Lea Henryka Sternbacha, istaknuvši njegov izvanredni doprinos razvoju
medicinske znanosti XX. stoljeća

OPATIJSKO DJETINJSTVO DR. LEA HENRYKA STERNBACHA
This paper studies the childhood of Dr. Leo H. Sternbach, an eminent American scientist,
in his native Opatija in the period of 1908 – 1921. His father, Mihael Abraham Sternbach,
a Polish Jew, after completing his studies in pharmacy and after a short practice in Poland
moved to Opatija at the beginning of the 20th century. There, he successfully ran a rented
pharmacy and met his future wife, Piroska Kohn. The family played an important role in
the life of the Jewish community of Opatija so Mihael A. Sternbach filled the post of The
Community’s president in the period from 1923 to 1926 after it was legally constituted. They
lived in a rented flat on the second floor of the Villa Jadran, close to the pharmacy and on
the main street of Opatija. Two sons, Leo and Gyula were to be born in Opatija. Leo, the
older one, will finish his elementary school there. However, because of Italian occupation in
1918 and the annexation of Opatija to the Kingdom of Italy, German schools were closed
down so he could not continue his education in German language. Leo was to carry on his
schooling in Villach first, then Graz (Austria) and complete it in Bielitz (Bielsko – Biała)
in Silesia, southern Poland, where the family moved in 1926. This decision was taken on
grounds of economic as well as other problems that emerged as consequences of altered
political circumstances in Opatija. This paper is also partly based on autobiographical notes
by Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach and the interviews conducted with him through e – mail in
May 2005.U priopćenju je riječ o djetinjstvu uglednog američkog znanstvenika dr. Lea H. Sternbacha
u rodnoj Opatiji (1908.–1921.) gdje se njegov otac Mihael Abraham Sternbach, poljski
Židov, nakon završenog studija farmacije i kratkotrajne prakse u Poljskoj, početkom XX.
stoljeća doselio i uspješno vodio iznajmljenu ljekarnu u Bazaru Mandria te tu upoznao i
svoju buduću suprugu Pirošku Cohn. Obitelj je zauzimala istaknutu ulogu u životu opatijske
židovske zajednice te je Mihael A. Sternbach obnašao i ulogu predsjednika opatijske židovske
općine nakon njezina utemeljenja (1923.–1926.). Stanovali su u iznajmljenom stanu na
drugom katu vile Jadran, u blizini ljekarne, na glavnoj opatijskoj prometnici. Njima će se
u Opatiji roditi dvojica sinova, Leo i Gyula.

Nadalje, istraživanje može doprinijeti otkrivanju različitih aspekata unutarnje dinamike razvoja židovske zajednice suvremenoga doba i njezina utjecaja u široj društvenoj zajednici.Based on the relevant historical literature and archival sources, particular demographic features of the Liburnian Jewish community, with the seat of the religious community in Opatija (Comunità ebraica di Abbazia), are identified here. The target period is between the forming of the community at the end of the 19th century and the preparations for the implementation of the fascistic race-based list of foreign and Italian Jews in the early August days of 1938; thereby, in the Kingdom of Italy, the foundations for the anti-Semitic “Rules for the Protection of the Italian Race” to be implemented were set. In the 1930s, among the Italian religious communities, the community in Opatija belonged – in the absolute sense – to the smallest ones, whilst its population density in Opatija considerably exceeded not only the national average, but also the average of the towns and cities with the oldest and most numerous Jewish communities. The data presented may serve as the starting point for the valuation of the demographic and the social-economic structure, as well as the effects of the fascistic and Nazi anti-Semitic persecution (1938-1945), due to which the local Jewish religious community had seized to operate, not to be renewed during the post-war period. The research may furthermore contribute to the identification of various internal dynamics aspects relating to the development of the modern Jewish community and its influence on the social community as a whole.

Written testimony of Bernard Nathan, given in 1963, on the history of the Jewish Religious Community of Opatija
This article, after almost fifty years of its creation, for the first time in the Croatian language and in the integral form, publishes the written testimony by Bernard Nathan given to the Federation of Yugoslavia of the Jewish Communities in Belgrade regarding the history of the Jewish community in Opatija (Die Geschichte der Israelitischen Kultursgemeinde von Abazzia). Bernard Nathan was a Jewish activist since the first years of Jewish presence in Liburnia at the end of the 19th century, who since 1924 until his captivity by the Fascists in southern Italy in June 1940 performed the function of President of the Jewish Community of Opatija (Comunita Israelitica di Abbazia). Along with the introductory review of the motivation for his testimony, in the main body of the article, Nathan described the beginnings of Jewish presence and the creation of institutional foundations of the Jewish Community in Opatija of the Habsburg empire at the end of the 19th century, the creation and the activities of the Jewish Religious Community from its formal- legal establishment under the Italian administration in 1923 until its closure soon after outbreak of the World War Two, due to the mass extermination of its members in Fascist and Nazi persecution (1938-1945.). In the Epilogue, as a separate section, dated 25 February 1964, Nathan described the outcomes of his endeavors to decipher the Hebrew writing in the lower part of the Aron Ha-Kodesh from the Opatija synagogue, integrated after the war into the monument in memory of persecuted Opatija Jews at the Opatija Jewish cemetery. He attached to it a brief expert report by the German art historian Georgina Ban-Volkmar (Die Hebraische Inschrift des Aron ha-Qodesch derfruheren Synagogue in Opatija, Yugoslavia)
