    Enhancing Water Quality Data Service Discovery And Access Using Standard Vocabularies

    There is a growing need for consistency across the publishing, discovering, integrating and access to scientific datasets, such as water quality data. Such datasets may have varying formats and service interfaces. The Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) is both a software package and a data format for producing array-oriented scientific data, which is commonly used to exchange data, including water quality data. NetCDF datasets are also published through service interfaces using the THREDDS data server. Alternatively water quality datasets can be encoded with standard XML formats such as WaterML 2.0, which can be published with services such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) community\u27s Web Feature Service interface standard (WFS). However, appropriate interpretation of the content, discovery and interoperability of data depends on common models, schemas and vocabularies, though these may not always be available. Using the water quality vocabulary we have developed, formalized using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) language, and published as Linked Data, we demonstrate the use of such standard vocabularies in existing data services for providing service capability metadata. We also present methods for augmenting existing metadata fields for water quality data specifically in formats such as NetCDF, WaterML 2.0 using standard vocabularies. We show how using standard vocabularies that are encoded and published using semantic technologies can enhance discovery, integration and access to existing data services delivering water quality datasets

    CLEAR II: Evidence for Early Formation of the Most Compact Quiescent Galaxies at High Redshift

    The origin of the correlations between mass, morphology, quenched fraction, and formation history in galaxies is difficult to define, primarily due to the uncertainties in galaxy star-formation histories. Star-formation histories are better constrained for higher redshift galaxies, observed closer to their formation and quenching epochs. Here we use "non-parametric" star-formation histories and a nested sampling method to derive constraints on the formation and quenching timescales of quiescent galaxies at 0.7<z<2.50.7<z<2.5. We model deep HST grism spectroscopy and photometry from the CLEAR (CANDELS Lymanα-\alpha Emission at Reionization) survey. The galaxy formation redshifts, z50z_{50} (defined as the point where they had formed 50\% of their stellar mass) range from z502z_{50}\sim 2 (shortly prior to the observed epoch) up to z5058z_{50} \simeq 5-8. \editone{We find that early formation redshifts are correlated with high stellar-mass surface densities, logΣ1/(M kpc2)>\log \Sigma_1 / (M_\odot\ \mathrm{kpc}^{-2}) >10.25, where Σ1\Sigma_1 is the stellar mass within 1~pkpc (proper kpc). Quiescent galaxies with the highest stellar-mass surface density, logΣ1/(M kpc2)>10.25\log\Sigma_1 / (M_\odot\ \mathrm{kpc}^{-2}) > 10.25, } show a \textit{minimum} formation redshift: all such objects in our sample have z50>2.9z_{50} > 2.9. Quiescent galaxies with lower surface density, $\log \Sigma_1 / (M_\odot\ \mathrm{kpc}^{-2}) = 9.5 - 10.25,showarangeofformationepochs(, show a range of formation epochs (z_{50} \simeq 1.5 - 8),implyingthesegalaxiesexperiencedarangeofformationandassemblyhistories.Wearguethatthesurfacedensitythreshold), implying these galaxies experienced a range of formation and assembly histories.     z~2: An Epoch of Disk Assembly

    We explore the evolution of the internal gas kinematics of star-forming galaxies from the peak of cosmic star-formation at z2z\sim2 to today. Measurements of galaxy rotation velocity VrotV_{rot}, which quantify ordered motions, and gas velocity dispersion σg\sigma_g, which quantify disordered motions, are adopted from the DEEP2 and SIGMA surveys. This sample covers a continuous baseline in redshift from z=2.5z=2.5 to z=0.1z=0.1, spanning 10 Gyrs. At low redshift, nearly all sufficiently massive star-forming galaxies are rotationally supported (Vrot>σgV_{rot}>\sigma_g). By z=2z=2, the percentage of galaxies with rotational support has declined to 50%\% at low stellar mass (1091010M10^{9}-10^{10}\,M_{\odot}) and 70%\% at high stellar mass (10101011M10^{10}-10^{11}M_{\odot}). For Vrot>3σgV_{rot}\,>\,3\,\sigma_g, the percentage drops below 35%\% for all masses. From z=2z\,=\,2 to now, galaxies exhibit remarkably smooth kinematic evolution on average. All galaxies tend towards rotational support with time, and it is reached earlier in higher mass systems. This is mostly due to an average decline in σg\sigma_g by a factor of 3 since a redshift of 2, which is independent of mass. Over the same time period, VrotV_{rot} increases by a factor of 1.5 for low mass systems, but does not evolve for high mass systems. These trends in VrotV_{rot} and σg\sigma_g with time are at a fixed stellar mass and should not be interpreted as evolutionary tracks for galaxy populations. When galaxy populations are linked in time with abundance matching, not only does σg\sigma_g decline with time as before, but VrotV_{rot} strongly increases with time for all galaxy masses. This enhances the evolution in Vrot/σgV_{rot}/\sigma_g. These results indicate that z=2z\,=\,2 is a period of disk assembly, during which the strong rotational support present in today's massive disk galaxies is only just beginning to emerge.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Ap

    A Harmonized Vocabulary For Water Quality

    Interoperability of water quality data depends on the use of common models, schemas and vocabularies. However, terms are usually collected during different activities and projects in isolation of one another, resulting in vocabularies that have the same scope being represented with different terms, using different formats and formalisms, and published in various access methods. Significantly, most water quality vocabularies conflate multiple concepts in a single term, e.g. quantity kind, units of measure, substance or taxon, medium and procedure. This bundles information associated with separate elements from the OGC Observations and Measurements (O&M) model into a single slot. We have developed a water quality vocabulary, formalized using RDF, and published as Linked Data. The terms were extracted from existing water quality vocabularies. The observable property model is inspired by O&M but aligned with existing ontologies. The core is an OWL ontology that extends the QUDT ontology for Unit and QuantityKind definitions. We add classes to generalize the QuantityKind model, and properties for explicit description of the conflated concepts. The key elements are defined to be sub-classes or sub-properties of SKOS elements, which enables a SKOS view to be published through standard vocabulary APIs, alongside the full view. QUDT terms are re-used where possible, supplemented with additional Unit and QuantityKind entries required for water quality. Along with items from separate vocabularies developed for objects, media, and procedures, these are linked into definitions in the actual observable property vocabulary. Definitions of objects related to chemical substances are linked to items from the Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) ontology. Mappings to other vocabularies, such as DBPedia, are in separately maintained files. By formalizing the model for observable properties, and clearly labelling the separate concerns, water quality observations from different sources may be more easily merged and also transformed to O&M for cross-domain applications

    Tiled Auxetic Cylinders for Soft Robots

    Compliant structures allow robots to overcome environmental challenges by deforming and conforming their bodies. In this paper, we investigate auxetic structures as a means of achieving this compliance for soft robots. Taking a tiling based approach, we fabricate 3D printed cylindrical auxetic structures to create tiled auxetic cylinders (TACs). We characterise the relative stiffness of the structures and show that variation in behaviour can be achieved by modifying the geometry within the same tiling family. In addition, we analysed the equivalent Poisson's ratio and found the range between the investigated designs to span from -0.33 to -2. Furthermore, we demonstrate a conceptual application in the design of a soft robot using the auxetic cylinders. We show that these structures can reactively change in shape, thereby reducing the complexity of control, with potential applications in confined spaces such as the human body, or for exploration through unpredictable terrain.</p
