    Design and performance of a Martian autonomous navigation system based on a smallsat constellation

    Deciphering the genesis and evolution of the Martian polar caps can provide crucial understanding of Mars' climate system and will be a big step forward for comparative climatology of the terrestrial planets. The growing scientific interest for the exploration of Mars at high latitudes, together with the need of minimizing the resources onboard landers and rovers, motivates the need for an adequate navigation support from orbit. In the context of the ARES4SC study, we propose a novel concept based on a constellation that can support autonomous navigation of different kind of users devoted to scientific investigations of those regions. We study two constellations, that differ mainly for the semi-major axis and the inclination of the orbits, composed of 5 small satellites (based on the SmallSats design being developed in Argotec), offering dedicated coverage of the Mars polar regions. We focus on the architecture of the inter-satellite links (ISL), the key elements providing both ephemerides and time synchronization for the broadcasting of the navigation message. Our concept is based on suitably configured coherent links, able to suppress the adverse effects of on-board clock instabilities and to provide excellent range-rate accuracies between the constellation's nodes. The data quality allows attaining good positioning performance for both constellations with a largely autonomous system. Indeed, we show that ground support can be heavily reduced by employing an ISL communication architecture. Periodic synchronization of the clocks on-board the constellation nodes with terrestrial time (TT) is enabled through the main spacecraft (the mother-craft), the only element of the constellation enabling radio communication with the Earth. We report on the results of numerical simulations in different operational scenarios and show that a very high-quality orbit reconstruction can be obtained for the constellation nodes using a batch-sequential filter or a batch filter with overlapping arcs, that could be implemented on board the mother-craft, thus enabling a high level of navigation autonomy. The assessment of the achievable positioning accuracy with this concept is fundamental to evaluate the feasibility of a future positioning system providing a global coverage of the red planet

    Plant functional traits are correlated with species persistence in the herb layer of old-growth beech forests

    This paper explores which traits are correlated with fine-scale (0.25 m2) species persistence patterns in the herb layer of old-growth forests. Four old-growth beech forests representing different climatic contexts (presence or absence of summer drought period) were selected along a north–south gradient in Italy. Eight surveys were conducted in each of the sites during the period spanning 1999–2011. We found that fine-scale species persistence was correlated with different sets of plant functional traits, depending on local ecological context. Seed mass was found to be as important for the fine-scale species persistence in the northern sites, while clonal and bud-bank traits were markedly correlated with the southern sites characterised by summer drought. Leaf traits appeared to correlate with species persistence in the drier and wetter sites. However, we found that different attributes, i.e. helomorphic vs scleromorphic leaves, were correlated to species persistence in the northernmost and southernmost sites, respectively. These differences appear to be dependent on local trait adaptation rather than plant phylogenetic history. Our findings suggest that the persistent species in the old-growth forests might adopt an acquisitive resource-use strategy (i.e. helomorphic leaves with high SLA) with higher seed mass in sites without summer drought, while under water-stressed conditions persistent species have a conservative resource-use strategy (i.e. scleromorphic leaves with low SLA) with an increased importance of clonal and resprouting ability

    Functional Optimisation of Online Algorithms in Multilayer Neural Networks

    We study the online dynamics of learning in fully connected soft committee machines in the student-teacher scenario. The locally optimal modulation function, which determines the learning algorithm, is obtained from a variational argument in such a manner as to maximise the average generalisation error decay per example. Simulations results for the resulting algorithm are presented for a few cases. The symmetric phase plateaux are found to be vastly reduced in comparison to those found when online backpropagation algorithms are used. A discussion of the implementation of these ideas as practical algorithms is given

    First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell {\Lambda}-Hypernuclei

    Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of eight Lambda-Hypernuclei (A = 5-16) have been revisited. New values of the ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths, Gamma_2N/Gamma_p, are obtained from single proton spectra, Gamma_2N/Gamma_p = 0.50 +/- 0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra, Gamma_2N/Gamma_p = 0.36 +/- 0.14stat +0.05sys -0.04sys , in full agreement with previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Lambda decay width, Gamma_p/Gamma_Lambda, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical calculations.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    MC1568 inhibits HDAC6/8 activity and influenza A virus replication in lung epithelial cells: Role of Hsp90 acetylation

    Aim: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) regulate the life cycle of several viruses. We investigated the ability of different HDAC inhibitors, to interfere with influenza virus A/Puerto Rico/8/34/H1N1 (PR8 virus) replication in Madin-Darby canine kidney and NCI cells. Results: 3-(5-(3-Fluorophenyl)-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl)-1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-N-hydroxyacrylamide (MC1568) inhibited HDAC6/8 activity and PR8 virus replication, with decreased expression of viral proteins and their mRNAs. Such an effect may be related to a decrease in intranuclear content of viral polymerases and, in turn, to an early acetylation of Hsp90, a major player in their nuclear import. Later, the virus itself induced Hsp90 acetylation, suggesting a differential and time-dependent role of acetylated proteins in virus replication. Conclusion: The inhibition of HDAC6/8 activity during early steps of PR8 virus replication could lead to novel anti-influenza strategy

    A study of the proton spectra following the capture of K−K^- in 6^6Li and 12^{12}C with FINUDA

    Momenta spectra of protons emitted following the capture of K−K^- in 6^6Li and 12^{12}C have been measured with 1% resolution. The 12^{12}C spectrum is smooth whereas for 6^6Li a well defined peak appears at about 500 MeV/cc. The first observation of a structure in this region was identified as a strange tribaryon or, possibly, a Kˉ\bar K-nuclear state. The peak is correlated with a π−\pi^- coming from Σ−\Sigma^- decay in flight, selected by setting momenta larger than 275 MeV/cc. The Σ−\Sigma^- could be produced, together with a 500 MeV/cc proton, by the capture of a K−K^- in a deuteron-cluster substructure of the 6^6Li nucleus. The capture rate for such a reaction is (1.62\pm 0.23_{stat} ^{+0.71}_{-0.44}(sys))%/K^-_{stop}, in agreement with the existing observations on 4^4He targets and with the hypothesis that the 6^6Li nucleus can be interpreted as a (d+α)(d+\alpha) cluster.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures.     Σ−p\Sigma^- p emission rates in K−K^- absorptions at rest on 6^6Li, 7^7Li, 9^{9}Be, 13^{13}C and 16^{16}O

    An experimental study of the Kstop−A→Σ−pA′K^-_{stop}A\rightarrow \Sigma^- p A' reaction on A=6A=^6Li, 7^7Li, 9^9Be, 13^{13}C and 16^{16}O pp-shell nuclei is presented. The data were collected by the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the DAΦ\PhiNE ϕ\phi-factory (LNF-INFN, Italy). Emission rates for the reaction in the mentioned nuclei are measured and compared with the few existing data. The spectra of several observables are discussed; indications of Quasi-Free absorptions by a (np)(np) pair embedded in the AA nucleus can be obtained from the study of the missing mass distributions.Comment: Version accepted by PR
