    Investigation of heat transfer augmentation through use of internally finned and roughened tubes : final summary report

    This report summarizes a three-year program concerned with obtaining basic design information for tubes having a random roughness on the inside wall (RID) and tubing having continuous internal fins (Forge Fin). Test apparatus and procedures were developed to obtain accurate heat-transfer and friction data for a wide variety of tube geometries using water as the test fluid. For the random roughness the heat-transfer coefficient was above the smooth tube value, for comparable flow conditions, by over 60 percent at a Reynolds number of 30,000. Larger percentage improvements can be expected for higher Reynolds numbers and for fluids having higher Prandtl numbers. Improvements in performance, based on equal pumping power for augmented and smooth tubes, of about 50 percent were observed. The heat-transfer characteristics for tape-generated swirl flow through rough tubes were investigated in order to determine the interaction of swirl flow and roughness effects. For the particular range of parameters covered, for equal flow rates, the maximum improvement in heat transfer with swirl flow in smooth tubes was 70 percent, whereas with swirl flow in rough tubes, the improvement was as much as 100 percent. The heat-transfer coefficient for rough tube swirl flow was accurately correlated by a modification of an additive expression previously suggested for prediction of smooth tube swirl flow data.(cont.) The test program for internally finned tubes established that short spiralled fins produce the greatest improvement in heat transfer. On the basis of equal flow conditions, the heat transfer was improved by over 200 percent; while at equal pumping power, the performance was as high as 170 percent. These improvements, which are attributed to increased area and turbulence promotion, appear to equal the improvements displayed by any of the schemes used to augment heat transfer inside tubes. In order to bring the augmentation problem into perspective, a discussion of data for other types of roughness and finning is included.DS

    Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 from a Seronegative Organ and Tissue Donor

    Abstract BACKGROUND Since 1985, donors of organs or tissues for transplantation in the United States have been screened for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and more than 60,000 organs and 1 million tissues have been transplanted. We describe a case of transmission of HIV-1 by transplantation of organs and tissues procured between the time the donor became infected and the appearance of antibodies. The donor was a 22-year-old man who died 32 hours after a gunshot wound; he had no known risk factors for HIV-1 infection and was seronegative. METHODS We reviewed the processing and distribution of all the transplanted organs and tissues, reviewed the medical histories of the donor and HIV-1—infected recipients, tested stored donor lymphocytes for HIV-1 by viral culture and the polymerase chain reaction, and tested stored serum samples from four organ recipients for HIV-1 antigen and antibody. RESULTS HIV-1 was detected in cultured lymphocytes from the donor. Of 58 tissues and organs obtained from the donor, 52 could be accounted for by the hospitals that received them. Of the 48 identified recipients, 41 were tested for HIV-1 antibody. All four recipients of organs and all three recipients of unprocessed fresh-frozen bone were infected with HIV-1. However, 34 recipients of other tissues — 2 receiving corneas, 3 receiving lyophilized soft tissue, 25 receiving ethanol-treated bone, 3 receiving dura mater treated with gamma radiation, and 1 receiving marrow-evacuated, fresh-frozen bone — tested negative for HIV-1 antibody. Despite immunosuppressive chemotherapy, HIV-1 antibody appeared between 26 and 54 days after transplantation in the three organ recipients who survived more than 4 weeks. CONCLUSIONS Although rare, transmission of HIV-1 by seronegative organ and tissue donors can occur. Improvements in the methods used to screen donors for HIV-1, advances in techniques of virus inactivation, prompt reporting of HIV infection in recipients, and accurate accounting of distributed allografts would help to reduce further this already exceedingly low risk.     Inhibition of G-protein signalling in cardiac dysfunction of intellectual developmental disorder with cardiac arrhythmia (IDDCA) syndrome

    Background: Pathogenic variants of GNB5 encoding the β5 subunit of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein cause IDDCA syndrome, an autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder associated with cognitive disability and cardiac arrhythmia, particularly severe bradycardia. Methods: We used echocardiography and telemetric ECG recordings to investigate consequences of Gnb5 loss in mouse. Results: We delineated a key role of Gnb5 in heart sinus conduction and showed that Gnb5-inhibitory signalling is essential for parasympathetic control of heart rate (HR) and maintenance of the sympathovagal balance. Gnb5-/- mice were smaller and had a smaller heart than Gnb5+/+ and Gnb5+/-, but exhibited better cardiac function. Lower autonomic nervous system modulation through diminished parasympathetic control and greater sympathetic regulation resulted in a higher baseline HR in Gnb5-/- mice. In contrast, Gnb5-/- mice exhibited profound bradycardia on treatment with carbachol, while sympathetic modulation of the cardiac stimulation was not altered. Concordantly, transcriptome study pinpointed altered expression of genes involved in cardiac muscle contractility in atria and ventricles of knocked-out mice. Homozygous Gnb5 loss resulted in significantly higher frequencies of sinus arrhythmias. Moreover, we described 13 affected individuals, increasing the IDDCA cohort to 44 patients. Conclusions: Our data demonstrate that loss of negative regulation of the inhibitory G-protein signalling causes HR perturbations in Gnb5-/- mice, an effect mainly driven by impaired parasympathetic activity. We anticipate that unravelling the mechanism of Gnb5 signalling in the autonomic control of the heart will pave the way for future drug screening

    Line of Business Reporting and Security Prices: An Analysis of an SEC Disclosure Rule: Comment

    In an earlier article in this Journal, Horwitz and Kolodny reported that imposition of the SEC's line of business reporting requirements did not affect investors' assessments of the riskiness of multisegment firms. We suggest that shortcomings in their sample-selection and hypothesis-testing procedures may have led to this result. Our empirical analyses indicate that the LOBUR disclosure did convey useful information to investors and that the average effect was a downward shift in their assessment of a multisegment firm's market riskiness.

    This paper investiga tes the extent to which nonsynchronous security trading explains observed autocorrelations in daily returns on stock market indices. The theoretical portfolio autocorrelation due solely to nonsynchronous trading is estimated from a derived model. This estimated level is found to be substantially less than that observed empirically. The theoretical and empirical relationship between portfolio size and autocorrelation is also investigated. The results of this study suggest that other price-adjustment delay factors, in addition to nonsynchronous trading, cause the high autocorrelations present in daily returns on stock index portfolios.
