Symbolic Implementation of Connectors in BIP
BIP is a component framework for constructing systems by superposing three
layers of modeling: Behavior, Interaction, and Priority. Behavior is
represented by labeled transition systems communicating through ports.
Interactions are sets of ports. A synchronization between components is
possible through the interactions specified by a set of connectors. When
several interactions are possible, priorities allow to restrict the
non-determinism by choosing an interaction, which is maximal according to some
given strict partial order.
The BIP component framework has been implemented in a language and a
tool-set. The execution of a BIP program is driven by a dedicated engine, which
has access to the set of connectors and priority model of the program. A key
performance issue is the computation of the set of possible interactions of the
BIP program from a given state.
Currently, the choice of the interaction to be executed involves a costly
exploration of enumerative representations for connectors. This leads to a
considerable overhead in execution times. In this paper, we propose a symbolic
implementation of the execution model of BIP, which drastically reduces this
overhead. The symbolic implementation is based on computing boolean
representation for components, connectors, and priorities with an existing BDD
package

Eclipsing Binaries in Open Clusters
Detached eclipsing binaries are very useful objects for calibrating
theoretical stellar models and checking their predictions. Detached eclipsing
binaries in open clusters are particularly important because of the additional
constraints on their age and chemical composition from their membership of the
cluster. I compile a list containing absolute parameters of well-studied
eclipsing binaries in open clusters, and present new observational data on the
B-type systems V1481 Cyg and V2263 Cyg which are members of the young open

Quasi-Two-Body Decays of Nonstrange Baryons
We examine the decays of nonstrange baryons to the final states ,
, , , , , and
, in a relativized pair-creation() model which has
been developed in a previous study of the decays of the same baryon
states. As it is our goal to provide a guide for the possible discovery of new
baryon states at CEBAF and elsewhere, we examine the decays of resonances which
have already been seen in the partial-wave analyses, along with those of states
which are predicted by the quark model but which remain undiscovered. The level
of agreement between our calculation and the available widths from the

Professionalism, golf coaching and a master of science degree
A distinction can be made between 'professionalisation', which is concerned with occupational status and standing, and 'professionalism,' which refers to matters of quality and standards of practice (especially specialized knowledge, ethics and altruism). The purpose of this stimulus article is to present key features of contemporary medical professionalism as a basis for critically reflecting on discourse associated with Tiger Woods' current coach, Sean Foley. It is suggested that that provision of a Master of Science degree in golf teaching/coaching would facilitate the development of 'professionalism' in golf coaches
Louse (Insecta : Phthiraptera) mitochondrial 12S rRNA secondary structure is highly variable
Lice are ectoparasitic insects hosted by birds and mammals. Mitochondrial 12S rRNA sequences obtained from lice show considerable length variation and are very difficult to align. We show that the louse 12S rRNA domain III secondary structure displays considerable variation compared to other insects, in both the shape and number of stems and loops. Phylogenetic trees constructed from tree edit distances between louse 12S rRNA structures do not closely resemble trees constructed from sequence data, suggesting that at least some of this structural variation has arisen independently in different louse lineages. Taken together with previous work on mitochondrial gene order and elevated rates of substitution in louse mitochondrial sequences, the structural variation in louse 12S rRNA confirms the highly distinctive nature of molecular evolution in these insects
Charge Deficiency, Charge Transport and Comparison of Dimensions
We study the relative index of two orthogonal infinite dimensional
projections which, in the finite dimensional case, is the difference in their
dimensions. We relate the relative index to the Fredholm index of appropriate
operators, discuss its basic properties, and obtain various formulas for it. We
apply the relative index to counting the change in the number of electrons
below the Fermi energy of certain quantum systems and interpret it as the
charge deficiency. We study the relation of the charge deficiency with the
notion of adiabatic charge transport that arises from the consideration of the
adiabatic curvature. It is shown that, under a certain covariance,
(homogeneity), condition the two are related. The relative index is related to
Bellissard's theory of the Integer Hall effect. For Landau Hamiltonians the
relative index is computed explicitly for all Landau levels.Comment: 23 pages, no figure
Nontrivial eigenvalues of the Liouvillian of an open quantum system
We present methods of finding complex eigenvalues of the Liouvillian of an
open quantum system. The goal is to find eigenvalues that cannot be predicted
from the eigenvalues of the corresponding Hamiltonian. Our model is a T-type
quantum dot with an infinitely long lead. We suggest the existence of the
non-trivial eigenvalues of the Liouvillian in two ways: one way is to show that
the original problem reduces to the problem of a two-particle Hamiltonian with
a two-body interaction and the other way is to show that diagram expansion of
the Green's function has correlation between the bra state and the ket state.
We also introduce the integral equations equivalent to the original eigenvalue

Constraining warm dark matter with cosmic shear power spectra
We investigate potential constraints from cosmic shear on the dark matter
particle mass, assuming all dark matter is made up of light thermal relic
particles. Given the theoretical uncertainties involved in making cosmological
predictions in such warm dark matter scenarios we use analytical fits to linear
warm dark matter power spectra and compare (i) the halo model using a mass
function evaluated from these linear power spectra and (ii) an analytical fit
to the non-linear evolution of the linear power spectra. We optimistically
ignore the competing effect of baryons for this work. We find approach (ii) to
be conservative compared to approach (i). We evaluate cosmological constraints
using these methods, marginalising over four other cosmological parameters.
Using the more conservative method we find that a Euclid-like weak lensing
survey together with constraints from the Planck cosmic microwave background
mission primary anisotropies could achieve a lower limit on the particle mass

Evidence for the fourth P11 resonance predicted by the constituent quark model
It is pointed out that the third of five low-lying P11 states predicted by a
constituent quark model can be identified with the third of four states in a
solution from a three-channel analysis by the Zagreb group. This is one of the
so-called ``missing'' resonances, predicted at 1880 MeV. The fit of the Zagreb
group to the pi N -> eta N data is the crucial element in finding this fourth
