    Perspectives on differing health outcomes by city: accounting for Glasgow's excess mortality

    Several health outcomes (including mortality) and health-related behaviors are known to be worse in Scotland than in comparable areas of Europe and the United Kingdom. Within Scotland, Greater Glasgow (in West Central Scotland) experiences disproportionately poorer outcomes independent of measurable variation in socioeconomic status and other important determinants. Many reasons for this have been proposed, particularly related to deprivation, inequalities, and variation in health behaviors. The use of models (such as the application of Bradford Hill’s viewpoints on causality to the different hypotheses) has provided useful insights on potentially causal mechanisms, with health behaviors and inequalities likely to represent the strongest individual candidates. This review describes the evolution of our understanding of Glasgow’s excess mortality, summarizes some of the key work in this area, and provides some suggestions for future areas of exploration. In the context of demographic change, the experience in Glasgow is an important example of the complexity that frequently lies behind observed variations in health outcomes within and between populations. A comprehensive explanation of Glasgow’s excess mortality may continue to remain elusive, but is likely to lie in a complex and difficult-to-measure interplay of health determinants acting at different levels in society throughout the life course. Lessons learned from the detailed examination of different potentially causative determinants in Scotland may provide useful methodological insights that may be applied in other settings. Ongoing efforts to unravel the causal mechanisms are needed to inform public health efforts to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes in Scotland

The record of Leptodactylus cupreus from municipality Santa Teresaextends in approximately 220 km to the northeastern of its geographic distribution and establishes the inferior limit of 800m in its altitudinal distribution in the Serra da Mantiqueira

    Test of Replica Theory: Thermodynamics of 2D Model Systems with Quenched Disorder

    We study the statistics of thermodynamic quantities in two related systems with quenched disorder: A (1+1)-dimensional planar lattice of elastic lines in a random potential and the 2-dimensional random bond dimer model. The first system is examined by a replica-symmetric Bethe ansatz (RBA) while the latter is studied numerically by a polynomial algorithm which circumvents slow glassy dynamics. We establish a mapping of the two models which allows for a detailed comparison of RBA predictions and simulations. Over a wide range of disorder strength, the effective lattice stiffness and cumulants of various thermodynamic quantities in both approaches are found to agree excellently. Our comparison provides, for the first time, a detailed quantitative confirmation of the replica approach and renders the planar line lattice a unique testing ground for concepts in random systems.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figure

    The smallest eigenvalue of Hankel matrices

    Let H_N=(s_{n+m}),n,m\le N denote the Hankel matrix of moments of a positive measure with moments of any order. We study the large N behaviour of the smallest eigenvalue lambda_N of H_N. It is proved that lambda_N has exponential decay to zero for any measure with compact support. For general determinate moment problems the decay to 0 of lambda_N can be arbitrarily slow or arbitrarily fast. In the indeterminate case, where lambda_N is known to be bounded below by a positive constant, we prove that the limit of the n'th smallest eigenvalue of H_N for N tending to infinity tends rapidly to infinity with n. The special case of the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials is discussed

    Smearing of charge fluctuations in a grain by spin-flip assisted tunneling

    We investigate the charge fluctuations of a grain (large dot) coupled to a lead via a small quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We show that the strong entanglement of charge and spin flips in this setup can result in a stable SU(4) Kondo fixed point, which considerably smears out the Coulomb staircase behavior already in the weak tunneling limit.     Generic scale of the "scale-free" growing networks

    We show that the connectivity distributions P(k,t)P(k,t) of scale-free growing networks (tt is the network size) have the generic scale -- the cut-off at kcuttβk_{cut} \sim t^\beta. The scaling exponent β\beta is related to the exponent γ\gamma of the connectivity distribution, β=1/(γ1)\beta=1/(\gamma-1). We propose the simplest model of scale-free growing networks and obtain the exact form of its connectivity distribution for any size of the network. We demonstrate that the trace of the initial conditions -- a hump at khkcuttβk_h \sim k_{cut} \sim t^\beta -- may be found for any network size. We also show that there exists a natural boundary for the observation of the scale-free networks and explain why so few scale-free networks are observed in Nature.Comment: 4 pages revtex, 3 figure
