Pretreatment with Pancaspase Inhibitor (Z-VAD-FMK) Delays but Does Not Prevent Intraperitoneal Heat-Killed Group B Streptococcus-Induced Preterm Delivery in a Pregnant Mouse Model

Caspases and apoptosis are thought to play a role in infection-associated preterm-delivery. We have shown that in vitro treatment with pancaspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK protects trophoblasts from microbial antigen-induced apoptosis. Objective. To examine whether in vivo administration of Z-VAD-FMK would prevent infection-induced preterm-delivery. Methods. We injected 14.5 day-pregnant-mice with heat-killed group B streptococcus (HK-GBS). Apoptosis within placentas and membranes was assessed by TUNEL staining. Calpain expression and caspase-3 activation were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Preterm-delivery was defined as expulsion of a fetus within 48 hours after injection. Results. Intrauterine (i.u.) or intraperitoneal (i.p.) HK-GBS injection led to preterm-delivery and induced apoptosis in placentas and membranes at 14 hours. The expression of calpain, a caspase-independent inducer of apoptosis, was increased in placenta. Treatment with the specific caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK (i.p.) prior to HK-GBS (i.p.) delayed but did not prevent preterm-delivery. Conclusion. Caspase-dependent apoptosis appears to play a role in the timing but not the occurrence of GBS-induced preterm delivery in the mouse

Creating Bonds across Campus: Integrating Elements of Information Literacy into the Chemistry Curriculum

The Chemistry and Research Services Library faculty at Georgia Gwinnett College have worked together for the last eight years to embed information literacy in the introductory chemistry class that is required for all students with STEM majors at the college. The library’s work to adopt and adapt the ACRL Framework has revitalized our cooperative efforts and has led to some major revisions of our collaborative information literacy initiative. We’ve flipped our instruction model, added an exciting new in-class activity that guides students on an exploration of how to assess and evaluate information through the lens of understanding “Information Creation as a Process” and are piloting innovative methods of instruction and assessment. Our panel will introduce our collaborative pedagogical work, cover our instructional design process, demonstrate our instructional methods, and discuss our most recent efforts to assess how much and how well our chemistry students are learning the information literacy knowledge practices and dispositions they need to succeed in their STEM fields

Emotional intelligence, victimisation, bullying behaviours and attitudes

Emotional intelligence (EI) and pro-victim attitudes play an important role in adolescent bullying and victimisation. We recruited 284 male and female adolescents attending secondary school in Australia. All participants completed the adolescent version of the Swinburne University Emotional Intelligence Test, the Peer Relations Questionnaire and the Revised Pro-victim Scale. Results revealed significant associations between bullying, victimisation, pro-victim attitudes and the EI dimensions. Regression analyses revealed greater Understanding Emotions, lower Emotional Management and Control, being male and having weaker Pro-Victim Attitudes to be significant predictors of engaging in bullying. Investigation of the influence of EI and pro-victim attitudes on victimisation revealed significant independent contributions to the prediction model of victimisation by lesser Emotional Management and Control and stronger Pro-Victim Attitudes. Pro-Social behaviours were predicted by the female gender and greater Understanding Emotions. Results have implications for management and intervention practices of school based adolescent bullying focussed on EI development

Mental health systems in six Caribbean small island developing states: a comparative situational analysis

Background: Small island developing states (SIDS) have particular mental health system needs due to their remoteness and narrow resource base. We conducted situational analyses to support mental health system strengthening in six SIDS: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat and Turks and Caicos Islands. Methods: The situational analyses covered five domains: 1. Socio-economic context and burden of mental disorders, 2. Leadership and governance for mental health 3. Mental health and social care services 4. Strategies for promotion and prevention in mental health and 5. Information systems, evidence and research for mental health. First, a desk-based exercise was conducted, in which data was drawn from the public domain. Second, a field visit was conducted at each site, comprising visits to facilities and consultation meetings with key stakeholders. Results: Our key findings were 1. Despite most of these SIDS being high-income economies, social inequalities within states exist. There was no population-level data on mental health burden. 2. All SIDS have a mental health policy or plan, but implementation is typically limited due to lack of funds or staff shortages. There was minimal evidence of service user involvement in policy or service development. 3. All SIDS have a specialist, multi-disciplinary mental health workforce, however Montserrat and Anguilla rely on visiting psychiatrists. Child and adolescent and dedicated crisis intervention services were found in only two and one SIDS respectively. A recovery-oriented ethos was not identified in any SIDS. 4. Mental illness stigma was prevalent in all SIDS. Promotion and prevention were objectives of mental health strategies for all SIDS, however activities tended to be sporadic. No mental health non-Governmental organisations were identified in three SIDS. 5. Health information systems are generally underdeveloped, with paper-based systems in three SIDS. There has been no rigorous local mental health research. Conclusion: Cross-cutting recommendations include: to develop mental health action plans that include clear implementation indicators; to facilitate community surveys to ascertain the prevalence of mental disorders; to explore task-sharing approaches to increase access to primary mental health care; and to develop programmes of mental health promotion and prevention

A functional trait database of arable weeds from Eurasia and North Africa

The functional traits of arable weeds in Eurasia and North Africa database contains functional trait values for specific leaf area, canopy height, canopy diameter, leaf area per node thickness, vegetative propagation, and plant life history for 928 arable weed species. The number of accessions used to calculate the trait values are provided. The data was collected up until 2021 from locations around Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, with minor collections in other parts of Eurasia (e.g., Japan), in order to characterise species growing as arable weeds in cereal and pulse crops managed under traditional agricultural regimes (that is, organically, without chemical fertilisers and herbicides, and in some cases minimal mechanisation) in these regions. This database iteration is version 1. The data are used by the R package WeedEco[1] to assign functional trait values to inputted species from archaeobotanical samples or other sources, allowing comparison through discriminant to three arable regime models.
