Objective: to develop minimum standards for nursing care for people intoxicated by alcohol and treated in the emergency units. Method: documental research, built upon the experience of the authors as members of the nursing care team of a center of toxicological assistance, based on literature review. Results: we presented the results in two units. Firstly, through a brief literature review on patient safety and alcohol users attended in emergency department, and secondly through a description of minimum standards for initial nursing care necessary for the safety of users of alcohol in three aspects: clinical/biological, psycho-emotional and social. Conclusion: The presented standardization, besides regulating nursing practice, improves the execution of assistance programs in the toxicology centers

Treatment for dermatitis associated with incontinence in institutionalized elderly: integrative review

    No full text
This integrative review aimed to identify options for therapeutic intervention in the last five years for the treatment of the incontinence-associated dermatitis in institutionalized elderly. The literature research was conducted in the electronics database: Lilacs, Medline, Scopus, Science Direct and Web of Science, with complete inclusion of scientific articles, published in Portuguese, Spanish or English, and dated from 2007 to 2011. In total (n=7), they were all in English and originated in Europe and North America. It was verified that absorbent products, baby wipes and topical products can bring good results, therefore they are strengthened by research of higher methodological stringency. Due to the scarcity of research about this theme and availability of similar products for the therapy of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis, it's necessary the development of evaluative research in the institutionalized elderly care

Objective: to characterize the profile of users intoxicated by drugs of abuse reported to a center of information and toxicological assistance and related this to the occurrence of deaths. Methods: study of case series reported in the 2010-2011 biennium after active case finding. Data were obtained from epidemiological records filed in the center and submitted to univariate analysis, with chi-squared test and Fischer test. Results: three hundred and thirty nine cases were found, most were men (87.3%), with basic education (61.0%) and elderly (37.2%). Alcohol use (83.8%) and chronic intoxications (89.9%) were predominant. Clinical complications were present in most medical diagnoses (63.4%). However, mortality was higher in the event deferral by cold and fire weapons. Conclusion: the consumption of drugs of abuse influences morbidity and mortality, particularly in men aged at 60 years or above and with low level of education

The 1,8-naphthyridines sulfonamides are NorA efflux pump inhibitors

    No full text
Objective: Efflux pumps are transmembrane proteins associated with bacterial resistance mechanisms. Bacteria use these proteins to actively transport antibiotics to the extracellular medium, preventing the pharmacological action of these drugs. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the antibacterial activity of 1,8-naphthyridines sulfonamides, as well as their ability to inhibit efflux systems of Staphylococcus aureus strains expressing different levels of the NorA efflux pump. Methods: The broth microdilution test was performed to assess antibacterial activity. Efflux pump inhibition was evaluated in silico by molecular docking and in vitro by fluorometric tests, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. The MIC was determined in the association between 1,8-naphthyridine and norfloxacin or ethidium bromide. Results: The 1,8-naphthyridines did not show direct antibacterial activity. However, they effectively reduced the MIC of multidrug-resistant bacteria by associating with norfloxacin and ethidium bromide, in addition to increasing the fluorescence emission. In silico analysis addressing the binding between NorA and 1,8-naphthyridines suggests that hydrogen bonds and hydrophilic interactions represent the interactions with the most favourable binding energy, corroborating the experimental data. Conclusion: Our data suggest that 1,8-naphthyridines sulfonamides inhibit bacterial resistance through molecular mechanisms associated with inhibition of the NorA efflux pump in S. aureus strains
