Uncleared Homicides: A Canada/United States Comparison
Beginning in the 1960s, there has been a marked decline in clearance rates of homicides, a finding that has generated little interest among criminological researchers. This article presents a comparative analysis of homicide clearance in Canada and the United States using data generated by the Canadian Centre of Justice Statistics and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation\u27s Supplementary Homicide Reports. Using logistic regression, homicide clearance is predicted on the basis of specific victim and offense characteristics for cases in Canada versus the United States and in Ontario versus New York State. The results indicate that the model is a good fit for homicide clearance in both countries as a whole. Whereas the homicide weapon, circumstances surrounding the offense, age, and gender of the victim were found to be significant homicide clearance predictors in New York State, only the circumstances surrounding the offense emerged as an important predictor in Ontario
Discovery of a z=4.93, X-ray selected quasar by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChamP)
We present X-ray and optical observations of CXOMP J213945.0-234655, a high
redshift (z=4.93) quasar discovered through the Chandra Multiwavelength Project
(ChaMP). This object is the most distant X-ray selected quasar published, with
an X-ray luminosity of L(X)=5.9x10^44 erg/s (measured in the 0.3-2.5 keV band
and corrected for Galactic absorption). CXOMP J213945.0-234655 is a g' dropout
object (>26.2), with r'=22.87 and i'=21.36. The rest-frame X-ray to optical
flux ratio is similar to quasars at lower redshifts and slightly X-ray bright
relative to z>4 optically-selected quasars observed with Chandra. The ChaMP is
beginning to acquire significant numbers of high redshift quasars to

The Quantity Theory of Money is Valid. The New Keynesians are Wrong!
We test the quantity theory of money (QTM) using a novel approach and a large new sample. We do not follow the usual approach of first differentiating the logarithm of the Cambridge equation to obtain an equation relating the growth rate of real GDP, the growth rate of money and inflation. These variables must then again be βintegratedβ by averaging in order to obtain stable relationships. Instead we suggest a much simpler procedure for testing directly the stability of the coefficient of the Cambridge equation. For 125 countries and post-war data we find the coefficient to be surprisingly stable. We do not select for high inflation episodes as was done in most empirical studies; inflation rates do not even appear in our data set.
Much work supporting the QTM has been done by economic historians and at the University of Chicago by Milton Friedman and his associates. The QTM was a foundation stone of the monetarist revolution. Subsequently belief in it waned. The currently dominant New Keynesian School, implicitly or explicitly denies the validity of the QTM. We survey this history and argue that the QTM is valid and New Keynesians are wrong
High-Velocity Line Forming Regions in the Type Ia Supernova 2009ig
We report measurements and analysis of high-velocity (> 20,000 km/s) and
photospheric absorption features in a series of spectra of the Type Ia
supernova (SN) 2009ig obtained between -14d and +13d with respect to the time
of maximum B-band luminosity. We identify lines of Si II, Si III, S II, Ca II
and Fe II that produce both high-velocity (HVF) and photospheric-velocity (PVF)
absorption features. SN 2009ig is unusual for the large number of lines with
detectable HVF in the spectra, but the light-curve parameters correspond to a
slightly overluminous but unexceptional SN Ia (M_B = -19.46 mag and Delta_m15
(B) = 0.90 mag). Similarly, the Si II lambda_6355 velocity at the time of B-max
is greater than "normal" for a SN Ia, but it is not extreme (v_Si = 13,400
km/s). The -14d and -13d spectra clearly resolve HVF from Si II lambda_6355 as
separate absorptions from a detached line forming region. At these very early
phases, detached HVF are prevalent in all lines. From -12d to -6d, HVF and PVF
are detected simultaneously, and the two line forming regions maintain a
constant separation of about 8,000 km/s. After -6d all absorption features are
PVF. The observations of SN 2009ig provide a complete picture of the transition
from HVF to PVF. Most SN Ia show evidence for HVF from multiple lines in
spectra obtained before -10d, and we compare the spectra of SN 2009ig to
observations of other SN. We show that each of the unusual line profiles for Si
II lambda_6355 found in early-time spectra of SN Ia correlate to a specific

On the Origin of the Treponematoses: A Phylogenetic Approach
For 500 years, controversy has raged around the origin of T. pallidum subsp. pallidum, the bacterium responsible for syphilis. Did Christopher Columbus and his men introduce this pathogen into Renaissance Europe, after contracting it during their voyage to the New World? Or does syphilis have a much older history in the Old World? This paper represents the first attempt to use a phylogenetic approach to solve this question. In addition, it clarifies the evolutionary relationships between the pathogen that causes syphilis and the other T. pallidum subspecies, which cause the neglected tropical diseases yaws and endemic syphilis. Using a collection of pathogenic Treponema strains that is unprecedented in size, we show that yaws appears to be an ancient infection in humans while venereal syphilis arose relatively recently in human history. In addition, the closest relatives of syphilis-causing strains identified in this study were found in South America, providing support for the Columbian theory of syphilis's origin
SN~2012cg: Evidence for Interaction Between a Normal Type Ia Supernova and a Non-Degenerate Binary Companion
We report evidence for excess blue light from the Type Ia supernova SN 2012cg
at fifteen and sixteen days before maximum B-band brightness. The emission is
consistent with predictions for the impact of the supernova on a non-degenerate
binary companion. This is the first evidence for emission from a companion to a
SN Ia. Sixteen days before maximum light, the B-V color of SN 2012cg is 0.2 mag
bluer than for other normal SN~Ia. At later times, this supernova has a typical
SN Ia light curve, with extinction-corrected M_B = -19.62 +/- 0.02 mag and
Delta m_{15}(B) = 0.86 +/- 0.02. Our data set is extensive, with photometry in
7 filters from 5 independent sources. Early spectra also show the effects of
blue light, and high-velocity features are observed at early times. Near
maximum, the spectra are normal with a silicon velocity v_{Si} = -10,500$ km
s^{-1}. Comparing the early data with models by Kasen (2010) favors a
main-sequence companion of about 6 solar masses. It is possible that many other
SN Ia have main-sequence companions that have eluded detection because the
emission from the impact is fleeting and faint.Comment: accepted to Ap
Single or Double Degenerate Progenitors? Searching for Shock Emission in the SDSS-II Type Ia Supernovae
From the set of nearly 500 spectroscopically confirmed type~Ia supernovae and
around 10,000 unconfirmed candidates from SDSS-II, we select a subset of 108
confirmed SNe Ia with well-observed early-time light curves to search for
signatures from shock interaction of the supernova with a companion star. No
evidence for shock emission is seen; however, the cadence and photometric noise
could hide a weak shock signal. We simulate shocked light curves using SN Ia
templates and a simple, Gaussian shock model to emulate the noise properties of
the SDSS-II sample and estimate the detectability of the shock interaction
signal as a function of shock amplitude, shock width, and shock fraction. We
find no direct evidence for shock interaction in the rest-frame -band, but
place an upper limit on the shock amplitude at 9% of supernova peak flux ( mag). If the single degenerate channel dominates type~Ia progenitors,
this result constrains the companion stars to be less than about 6
on the main sequence, and strongly disfavors red giant companions.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figure
