    Applying a new version of the Brazilian-Portuguese UPSIT smell test in Brazil

    Standardized olfactory tests are now available to quantitatively assess disorders of olfaction. A Brazilian-Portuguese version of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) is currently being developed specifically for the Brazilian population. The most recent Brazilian-Portuguese version of the UPSIT (UPSIT-Br2) was administered to 88 Brazilian subjects who had no history of neurological or otorhinolaryngological disease. UPSIT-Br2 scores decreased with age, were lower in men than in women, and were lower in subjects with lower income. The degree to which the poorer performance of subjects with lower socio-economic status reflects lack of familiarity with test items is not known. Although this version of the UPSIT provides a sensitive and useful test of smell function for the Brazilian population, a revision of some test items is needed to achieve comparable norms to those found using the North American UPSIT in the United States

    Cytokine profile associated with chronic and acute human schistosomiasis mansoni

    The production and regulation of interleukin (IL) IL-13, IL-4 and interferon-gamma (IFN-³) was evaluated in 43 schistosomiasis patients with different clinical forms. Whole-blood cultures cytokine production in response to soluble egg antigen (SEA), soluble worm adult preparation (SWAP), mitogens, neutralizing antibodies or recombinant IL-13 were measured by ELISA. After SWAP stimulation, chronic patients, particularly hepatointestinals, produced higher levels of IL-4 in comparison with acute patients, suggesting the presence of a type 2 cytokine profile in these patients. Following SEA and SWAP stimulation, hepatosplenic (HS) patients showed increased levels of IFN-³ when compared with acute patients, indicating that HS disease in humans is associated with a type 1 cytokine response.     Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)A simple preparation methodology able to stabilize gold nanoparticles and to obtain an electrode which detects ascorbic acid, uric acid, and dopamine by different techniques is presented. A 3-mercaptopropyl-functionalized silica network was synthesized using the sol-gel method. Gold nanoparticles (nAu) were immobilized on the material at synthesis by adding a sol of these previously prepared particles to the reaction mixture. The electrochemical behavior of the SiO2/MPTS/Au carbon paste electrode was studied using cyclic voltammetry in the presence of a hexacyanoferrate probe molecule. The presence of nAu in the functionalized silica network changes the electrochemical characteristics of the material, favoring the electron transfer process of this complex ion. The SiO2/MPTS/Au electrode was proven to be an efficient tool in the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (H(2)AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) using square wave voltammetry techniques. With the nAu on the electrode, an increase in the peak current related to the redox process of the H(2)AA, DA, and UA was observed. The separations of the anodic peak potentials between DA/H(2)AA and UA/H(2)AA were 310 and 442 mV, respectively. Infrared spectroscopy of the SiCe material showed the formation of the Si-O-Ce linkage in the mixed oxide. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy indicated that the cerium oxide particles were homogenously dispersed on the matrix surface. X-ray diffraction and Si-29 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance implied non-crystalline silica matrices with chemical environments that are typical for silica-based mixed oxides. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Ce was present in approximately equal amounts of both the 3+ and 4+ oxidation states. Cyclic voltammetry data of electrode prepared from the silica-cerium mixed oxide showed a peak for oxidation of Ce3+/Ce4+ at 0.76 V and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy equivalent circuit indicated a porous structure with low charge transfer resistance. In the presence of nitrite, the SiCe electrode shows an anodic oxidation peak at 0.76 V with a linear response as the concentration of the analyte increases from 3 x 10(-5) at 3.9 x 10(-3) mol L-1.
