Into the Field: Learning About English Language Learners In Newcomer Programs

This research examines the impact of field experiences with English language learners on the conceptual and emotional development of preservice disciplinary students. For one semester, preservice university students worked with English language learners enrolled in middle and high school Newcomer Programs. During this time the university students wrote reflection papers and grand learnings/lingering questions essays linking the field experiences with course readings and in-class activities. A qualitative analysis of these reflections found four critical content-based learnings related to English Language Learners emerged from these field experiences: (1) the distinction between content, language, and activity challenges, (2) conversational versus academic language, (3) code switching with the use of the home language in the classroom, and (4) increased confidence, empathy, and advocacy of the preservice teachers for English language learners. Suggestions for those instructors wishing to provide similar experiences to their preservice students conclude the research

Undoubtedly, the exhibition was the result of a consistent involvement; not only in the figurative art, but also in the thoughtful observation of the human figure and its metamorphosis. It is informed by Cieslinska’s belief that the human diversity, characteristics and features are fascinating basis for observation and for wandering in the areas of illusory memory full of evocations and references; where the boundaries between illusion and reality get blurred

Schutz von Holz- und TMP-Holzstoff-Oberflächen vor lichtinduzierter Vergilbung durch chemische Modifikation des Lignins

Ein neuer Reaktionsmechanismus der Chromophorenbildung im Lignin wurde bei der lichtinduzierten Vergilbung von Holz- und TMP-Holzstoff-Oberflächen identifiziert. Die Photolabilität der acetylierten Oberflächen wurde anhand von Untersuchungen mit Ligninmodellsubstanzen nachgewiesen. Basierend auf dieser Erkenntnis wurde eine neuartige Schutzmethode für Holz- und TMP-Holzstoff-Oberflächen vor lichtinduzierter Vergilbung entwickelt

A Pilot Case Study on Innovative Behaviour: Lessons Learned and Directions for Future Work

Context: A case study is a powerful research strategy for investigating complex social-technical and managerial phenomena in real life settings. However, when the phenomenon has not been fully discovered or understood, pilot case studies are important to refine the research problem, the research variables, and the case study design before launching a full-scale investigation. The role of pilot case studies has not been fully addressed in empirical software engineering research literature. Objective: To explore the use of pilot case studies in the design of full-scale case studies, and to report the main lessons learned from an industrial pilot study. Method: We designed and conducted an exploratory case study to identify new relevant research variables that influence the innovative behaviour of software engineers in the industrial setting and to refine the full-scale case study design for the next phase of our research. Results: The use of a pilot case study identified several important research variables that were missing in the initial framework. The pilot study also supported a more sophisticated case study design, which was used to guide a full-scale study. Conclusions: When a research topic is has not been fully discovered or understood, it is difficult to create a case study design that covers the relevant research variables and their potential relationships. Conducting a full-scale case study using an untested case design can lead to waste of resources and time if the design has to be reworked during the study. In these situations, the use of pilot case studies can significantly improve the case study design

Prospective associations of different contexts of physical activity with psychological distress and well-being among middle-aged adults: an analysis of the 1970 British Cohort Study

Background: Our aim was to investigate whether different types and social contexts of physical activity (PA) participation are prospectively associated with psychological distress and well-being among middle-aged adults. / Methods: Data from the 1970 British Cohort Study was used (N=5,144-2,733 women). At age 42y, participants reported their type of leisure-time PA, which was classified as individual PA or group PA (exposure). At age 46y, participants reported co-primary outcomes: psychological distress (Malaise Inventory) and well-being (Warwick-Edinburgh scale). Highest academic achievement, employment status, country of interview, baseline values of psychological distress and well-being, smoking, alcohol use, TV-viewing and total physical activity at 42y were used as covariates. Main analyses included linear regression stratifying by sex. / Results: Jogging, cross-country, road-running (both sexes) as well as team sports (men) were associated with higher well-being. Health, fitness, gym or conditioning activities and jogging, cross-country (women), road-running (women) and team sports (men) were associated with lower psychological distress. Participation in both individual and group PA were associated with lower psychological distress and higher well-being for both sexes in crude models. However, adjusted models revealed that only group PA was associated with lower psychological distress (B: -0.106; 95%CI:-0.188 to -0.025) and higher well-being (0.835; 0.050 to 1.619) among men but not women. In the sensitivity analysis, group PA was associated with higher well-being (0.855; 0.094 to 1.616) when compared with individual PA among men. Group PA was not associated with psychological distress among both sexes and well-being among women when compared with individual PA. / Conclusion: Group PA was prospectively associated with lower psychological distress and higher well-being among men but not females. Future PA interventions could focus on group activities for males. Further research to understand the relationship between individual/group PA and mental health is required in females

How to compare energy efficiency inspection tests on TVs?

It is a case study conducted in company X of the electronic branch located in the Industrial Pole of Manaus (PIM), the capital of Amazonas–Brazil. The problem was the need to develop a benchmarking involving energy efficiency inspection tests on televisions. The objective is to compare the performance of the standard method and the new method of performing the energy efficiency inspection test. To this end, quality tools were applied with data collected from the use of the time study of each test step. After data collection and analysis, it was concluded that the new test: a) has 67% of its steps performed automatically and 43% manually, its average lead time is 4h14min34, a gain of 33.5% in total time required to perform the test; b) can be developed with the application of Brainstorming, Ishikawa Diagram, GUT Matrix, PDCA, Vertical Flowchart in conjunction with Chrono-analysis. It is worth highlighting the importance of the local top management support so that each of these tools is used with autonomy and creativity by the collaborators involved in the project
