    Being Deaf in Mainstream Schools: The Effect of a Hearing Loss in Children’s Playground Behaviors

    Naturalistic playground observations are a rich source of information when studying the social interactions of preschool children. On the playground, children can interact with their peers, explore different places and activities, and engage in different types of play. For deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children, interactions at a playground can be more difficult because of the large number of auditory stimuli surrounding them. Constraints in the access to the social world on the playground might hamper DHH children’s interactions with their typically hearing (TH) peers, activities, and play. This pilot study aimed to examine the playground behaviors of preschool DHH children across three aspects: social levels, type of activities, and play choices. For this purpose, 12 preschool DHH children were observed during recess time, and their behaviors were coded and compared to their 85 TH peers. The preliminary findings indicate that DHH children spend less time in social interactions compared to their TH peers and that they still face difficulties when socially engaging with their TH peers. These findings suggest that interventions should focus on three aspects: the physical environment awareness of TH peers about communicating with DHH children, and the use of exercise play to facilitate social interactions between DHH children and their TH peers

    The relationship between the quality of kindergartens’ outdoor physical environment and preschoolers’ social functioning.

    The ability to initiate and engage in relationships is a critical landmark and predictor of children’s development and well-being. In kindergarten, children exhibit greater social participation outdoors rather than indoors. Indeed, the physical environment influences preschoolers’ social proximity. In this study, we examine the relationship between the quality of kindergartens’ outdoor physical environment and preschoolers’ social functioning. Two kindergartens in Gondomar, Portugal, were selected to participate according to different levels of their physical environment outdoors (poor and fair quality) and measured by a specific physical environment rating scale. Twenty-six children (aged 3–6, 10 boys) participated in this study. Children’s social proximity at the playground was measured through Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID). Mann–Whitney statistical tests were used to compare social proximity between groups. Our results showed that in the higher quality outdoor area, children spent less time alone and more time in social proximity with their peers in smaller groups (one or two children). More time was also spent in social proximity with different genders. Our study emphasizes the critical importance of reviewing kindergartens’ outdoor physical environments to support preschoolers’ social needs in a more challenging and diverse setting

    A review on playground behaviors - the case of children with hearing loss

    Play is an important platform for social learning experiences where children can master their social, emotional, communication and motor abilities. Play behaviors occur in many forms (e.g. pretend, exercise, rough-and-tumble play) and patterns (e.g. social, parallel, solitary play) that vary according to the characteristics of the setting, the familiarity with peers, and the characteristics of the child. Research has shown that due to the impairments in hearing and communication, children with a hearing loss (HL) present different behavior patterns at the playground when compared to normally hearing peers (NHP) . This paper aims to portrait the current knowledge about playground behaviors of children with HL, presenting some suggestions for future research

    Anatomical aspects of the embryo and initial development of Oenocarpus minor Mart: a palm tree from the Amazon

    The anatomy of the embryo and the initial germination phase of O. minor seeds are examined here. Ripe fruits were collected from five individuals, the pulp removed, and the seeds sown in beds with sandy substrate in a greenhouse with 50% shade. Germination follow-up was made by collecting different stages of development. The anatomical study done according to usual techniques of light microscopy. The embryo is capitate and occupies a central position in the basal region of the seed. The embryogenic axis is located in the proximal region in a position that is oblique to the cotyledon axis. The cotyledon is formed by parenchymatous, procambial and protodermic tissue. The vascular bundles lie along the peripheral zone of the distal region to the embryogenicaxis. After 14 days, the primary rootemerges; after 21 days, the first cotyledon sheath and after 35 days, the second cotyledon sheath, and the seedling emerges above the substrate. Germination is of the ligule adjacent type.Neste trabalho foi feita a anatomia do embrião e a fase inicial da germinação da semente de O. minor. Frutos maduros de cinco indivíduos foram despolpados e as sementes obtidas foram semeadas em canteiros contendo substrato areia em casa de vegetação com sombreamento a 50%. O acompanhamento da germinação foi feito através de coletas das diferentes fases do desenvolvimento. O estudo anatômico foi realizado conforme técnicas usuais de microscopia de luz. O embrião é capitado. O eixo embrionário localiza-se na região proximal em posição oblíqua ao eixo cotiledonar. O cotilédone é formado por tecido parenquimático, procambial e protodérmico. Os feixes vasculares ocorrem ao longo da zona periférica da região distal até ao eixo embrionário. Aos 14 dias é emitida a raiz primária. Aos 21 dias forma-se a primeira bainha cotiledonar e aos 35 dias a segunda bainha cotiledonar ocorrendo à emergência da plântula acima do substrato. A germinação é do tipo adjacente ligular

    RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influencia do tamanho e da temperatura na germinação das sementes, assim como, da posição de escarificação do tegumento e a profundidade de semeadura na emergência de plântulas de jutaí. As sementes foram separadas em três grupos: sementes pequenas, médias e grandes. A germinação das sementes foram realizadas nas temperaturas de 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 45 °C e com fotoperíodo de 12 horas. As sementes escarificadas foram colocadas para germinar em 0, 2, 4 e 6 cm de profundidade de semeadura. As sementes médias e grandes apresentaram maiores porcentagens e índices de velocidade de germinação. A faixa de temperatura ótima de germinação está entre 25 e 35°C. A escarificação no hilo da semente ou não é adequada para quebra de dormência de sementes de jutaí. Profundidades de semeadura iguais ou superiores a 4 cm são inadequadas para a emergência de plântulas de jutaí

    The effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in association with two vegetable oil sources on the fatty acids of meat and giblets of broiler chickens was evaluated. Two hundred 21-day-old broiler chickens were distributed in a completely randomized factorial design 2 x 5 (two oil sources, soybean or canola oil; and five levels of CLA, 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0g/kg). The addition of CLA to the diet resulted in an increase (PAvaliou-se o efeito da suplementação de ácido linoléico conjugado (CLA) associado com duas fontes de óleo na dieta de frangos de corte sobre a composição de ácidos graxos das vísceras e da carne de aves. Duzentos frangos de corte, machos, com 21 dias de idade, foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 2 x 5 (duas fontes de óleo, soja e canola e cinco níveis de CLA, 0,0, 2,5, 5,0, 7,5 e 10,0g/kg). A adição de CLA na dieta resultou em aumento (P<0,05) de sua deposição na carne e nas vísceras de aves. Foi observado decréscimo (P<0,05) na taxa de poliinsaturados:saturados nas carnes da coxa e do peito, no coração e na moela com a suplementação de CLA. Houve interação (P<0,05) CLA x fonte de óleo. O uso de teores crescentes de CLA na dieta contendo óleo de soja na dieta resultou em aumento (P<0,05) no conteúdo lipídico. O contrário foi verificado com a utilização de óleo de canola, especificamente no conteúdo de ácidos graxos saturados (P<0,05) na carne do peito e no fígado e de monoinsaturados (P<0,05) nas carnes do peito e da coxa, fígado e moela
