Non-hexagonal-ring defects and structures induced by strain in graphene and in functionalized graphene

We perform {\textit ab initio} calculations for the strain-induced formation of non-hexagonal-ring defects in graphene, graphane (planar CH), and graphenol (planar COH). We find that the simplest of such topological defects, the Stone-Wales defect, acts as a seed for strain-induced dissociation and multiplication of topological defects. Through the application of inhomogeneous deformations to graphene, graphane and graphenol with initially small concentrations of pentagonal and heptagonal rings, we obtain several novel stable structures that possess, at the same time, large concentrations of non-hexagonal rings (from fourfold to elevenfold) and small formation energies

Single Jejunum Metastasis from Breast Cancer Arising Twelve Years after the Initial Treatment

Metastatic involvement of gastrointestinal tract from breast cancer is a rare event. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman presenting with bowel obstruction, related to metastasis of a primary breast cancer she had 12 years earlier (a triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma treated with surgery and chemotherapy). Bowel obstruction was caused by a 20-centimeter tumor in the jejunum, involving also the transverse colon. The patient underwent en bloc resection of tumor with jejunum and transverse bowel segment and received adjuvant chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel. Características de reprodução e de crescimento de ovinos Mesticos Santa Inês, no Ceará.

Resumo: 0 efeito do ambiente e do genótipo foi estudado em dez fazendas particulares no Estado do Ceara, em 480 ovelhas Crioulas, 48 carneiros Santa lnês e 1474 cordeiros F1. As características estudadas foram taxas de acasalamento, fertilidade ao parto, prolificidade e desmame, bem como os pesos ao nascer, 56, 84 e 112 dias de idade e os ganhos diarios de peso do nascimento aos 56, dos 56 aos 84 e do nascimento aos 112 dias de idade. Houve efeito significativo da raça sobre as taxas de acasalamento, fertilidade e desmame, sendo que as ovelhas F1 produziram menos cordeiros que as Crioulas. Houve efeito significativo da idade das ovelhas e da fazenda sobre todas as características estudadas, exceto o efeito da idade da ovelha sobre a taxa de desmame, Os pesos e os ganhos de peso na fase de crescimento, de modo geral, foram influenciados pelo ano de nascimento, tipo de nascimento, fazenda e reprodutor dentro de fazenda. As estimativas de herdabilidades para os pesos variam de 0,36 a 0,53, mostrando que existe grande possibilidade para se melhorar a taxa de ganho de peso dos cordeiros cruzados por meio de seleçao. [Reproductive Performance of Crossbred Santa Inês Sheep in Ceará State]. Abstract: The effect of environment and genotype on the Brazilian tropical sheep reproductive performance were evaluated on 480 native ewes, 48 Santa Inês rams and 1.474 F1 lambs from ten private farms in the state of Ceará. The studied traits were mating, fertility, prolificacy and weaning rates, as well as the weight gains at birth, 84 and 112 days, and average daily weight gains from birth to 56, from 56 to 84 and from birth to 112 days. There were effect of breed on the mating, fertility and weaning rates. The F1 ewes were less productive than the natives, but the 1/2 Santa Inês + 1/2 native and 3/4 Santa Inês + 1/4 native lambs had similar growth rates. There were also effect of ewe ages and farm effect on all studied traits, except for ewe ages on weaning rates. Birth year, birth type, farm and ram within the farm, generally, influenced the weights and weight gains in the growth phase. The heritabilities estimated for the weight gain ranged from 0.36 to 0.56, showing that there is a large possibility for improving the weight gain rates of crossbred lambs through mass selection

Características de reprodução em ovelhas, no Ceará.

Na região semi-árida do Nordeste do Brasil, a exploração de ovinos Mestiços e Crioulos (tipos nativos) para produção de carne e pele vem crescendo paulatinamente, mas o desempenho reprodutivo do rebanho é baixo, causado principalmente pela escassez alimentar imposta pelas condições climáticas do semi-árido e a inexistência de cuidados sanitários. Em geral, a taxa de sobrevivência é baixa e o desenvolvimento das crias é lento. Dentre os ovinos existentes na região, o tipo Crioula aparece em maior proporção na maioria dos criatórios (JARDIM, 1978). Entre as raças deslanadas do Nordeste, a Santa Inês apresenta maior velocidade de crescimento (LIMA et al., 1985) no entanto, não é recomendada para criações extensivas em razão de seu baixo desempenho em caatinga nativa (FIGUEIREDO et al., 1985). Duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumor and endoscopic ultrasound

Duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a very rare condition. The pre-operative diagnosis can be a challenge but it is very important because GISTs have singularities that differ from other tumors and their location in the duodenum itself can have a major role in the choice of the surgical approach. We present two cases of duodenal GISTs where endoscopic ultrasound had a single role in their management, namely allowing the possibility to obtain material for immunocytochemical pre-operative diagnosis and regarding the precise relation to the papilla of Vater. The patients were operated and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis in both cases
