    Monitoring the efficiency of iron chelation therapy: the potential of nontransferrin-bound iron.

    The major ligands of nontransferrin-bound iron (NTBI) are suggested to be citrate and albumin. The proportion of iron binding to albumin is influenced by the degree of oxidation and glycation of the protein. LC-ICP-MS is demonstrated to be a useful technique for the speciation of NTBI, with unprocessed serum being subjected to analysis. Ferritin iron, citrate iron, and ferrioxamine can be quantified using this technique. This review describes the use of a new fluorescent probe for NTBI quantification

    Evaluation of biofilm formation on acrylic resin surfaces coated with silicon dioxide: an in situ study.

    Biofilm on acrylic resin dental prostheses may cause gingival inflammation. This study evaluated the influence of a silicon dioxide coating layer applied onto acrylic resin on the adhesion of microorganisms. Blocks (5 x 5 x 3 mm) of acrylic resin were evaluated for surface roughness and divided into two groups: control (CG) and coated with silicon dioxide (LG group). The specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (n = 1) and by contact angle analysis (n = 3). For the in situ study, 20 volunteers wore acrylic palatal devices containing three samples from each group (n = 60) for 2 days. The biofilm formed was quantified by metabolic activity and total biomass using the crystal violet assay. The results were subjected to Bartlett's normality test and Gamma model with random effect for the response variable (α = 5%). The mean contact angle of the coated group was significantly lower than that of the uncoated group (p < 0.05). The metabolic activity of microorganisms in the biofilm on the blocks treated with coating was significantly lower than that of control blocks (p = 0.02). Regarding the amount of extracellular matrix produced by the microorganisms, there was no difference between the CG and LG group (p = 0.05). The application of a silicon dioxide coating on acrylic resin reduced the activity of the polymicrobial biofilm formed in situ. This coating may be advantageous for patients with conventional complete dentures or implants made of acrylic resin and who have motor difficulties that prevent them from cleaning their prostheses properly

    Gradient jump penalty stabilisation of spectral/hp element discretisation for under-resolved turbulence simulations

    One of the strengths of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has been its balance between accuracy and robustness, which stems from DG’s intrinsic (upwind) dissipation being biased towards high frequencies/wavenumbers. This is particularly useful in high Reynolds-number flow simulations where limitations on mesh resolution typically lead to potentially unstable under-resolved scales. In continuous Galerkin (CG) discretisations, similar properties are achievable through the addition of artificial diffusion, such as spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV). The latter, although recognised as very useful in CG-based high-fidelity turbulence simulations, has been observed to be sub-optimal when compared to DG at intermediate polynomials orders (P ≈ 3). In this paper we explore an alternative stabilisation approach by the introduction of a continuous interior penalty on the gradient discontinuity at elemental boundaries, which we refer to as a gradient jump penalisation (GJP). Analogous to DG methods, this introduces a penalisation at the elemental interfaces as opposed to the interior element stabilisation of SVV. Detailed eigenanalysis of the GJP approach shows its potential as equivalent (sometimes superior) to DG dissipation and hence superior to previous SVV approaches. Through eigenanalysis, a judicious choice of GJP’s P-dependent scaling parameter is made and found to be consistent with previous apriori error analysis. The favourable properties of the GJP stabilisation approach are also supported by turbulent flow simulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, as we achieve high-quality flow solutions at P = 3 using GJP, whereas SVV performs marginally worse at P = 5 with twice as many degrees of freedom in total

    Bioresorbable scaffolds: a new paradigm in percutaneous coronary intervention

    Numerous advances and innovative therapies have been introduced in interventional cardiology over the recent years, since the first introduction of balloon angioplasty, but bioresorbable scaffold is certainly one of the most exciting and attracting one. Despite the fact that the metallic drug-eluting stents have significantly diminished the re-stenosis ratio, they have considerable limitations including the hypersensitivity reaction to the polymer that can cause local inflammation, the risk of neo-atherosclerotic lesion formation which can lead to late stent failure as well as the fact that they may preclude surgical revascularization and distort vessel physiology. Bioresorbable scaffolds overcome these limitations as they have the ability to dissolve after providing temporary scaffolding which safeguards vessel patency. In this article we review the recent developments in the field and provide an overview of the devices and the evidence that support their efficacy in the treatment of CAD. Currently 3 devices are CE marked and in clinical use. Additional 24 companies are developing these kind of coronary devices. Most frequently used material is PLLA followed by magnesium

    Sex and lifestyle dictate learning performance in a neotropical wasp

    In contrast to extensive investigations on bee cognition, the cognitive capacities of wasps remain largely unexplored despite their key role as pollinators and predators of insect pests. Here we studied learning and memory in the neotropical wasp Mischocyttarus cerberus using a Pavlovian conditioning in which harnessed wasps respond with conditioned movements of their mouthparts to a learned odorant. We focused on the different castes, sexes, and ages coexisting within a nest and found that adults of M. cerberus learned and memorized efficiently the odor-sugar associations. In contrast, newly emerged females, but not males, were unable to learn odorants. This difference concurs with their different lifestyle as young males perform regular excursions outside the nest while young females remain in it until older age. Our results thus highlight the importance of socio-ecological constraints on wasp cognition and set the basis for mechanistic studies on learning differences across ages and castes

    P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 promotes T cell lymphoma development and dissemination

    P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein expressed in lymphoid and myeloid cells. It is a ligand of P-, E- and L-selectin and is involved in T cell trafficking and homing to lymphoid tissues, among other functions. PSGL-1 expression has been implicated in different lymphoid malignancies, so here we aimed to evaluate the involvement of PSGL-1 in T cell lymphomagenesis and dissemination. PSGL-1 was highly expressed at the surface of human and mouse T cell leukemia and lymphoma cell lines. To assess its impact on T cell malignancies, we stably expressed human PSGL-1 (hPSGL-1) in a mouse thymic lymphoma cell line, which expresses low levels of endogenous PSGL-1 at the cell surface. hPSGL-1-expressing lymphoma cells developed subcutaneous tumors in athymic nude mice recipients faster than control empty vector or parental cells. Moreover, the kidneys, lungs and liver of tumor-bearing mice were infiltrated by hPSGL-1-expressing malignant T cells. To evaluate the role of PSGL-1 in lymphoma cell dissemination, we injected intravenously control and hPSGL-1-expressing lymphoma cells in athymic mice. Strikingly, PSGL-1 expression facilitated disease infiltration of the kidneys, as determined by histological analysis and anti-CD3 immunohistochemistry.     OS CONCEITOS DE MORTE E MORRER NA ENFERMAGEM E AS RELAÇÕES COM O ETHOS DO CUIDADO

     In this study, we analyze the influence of the concepts of death and dying of the nursing staff on the practice of care given in some areas of hospitalization. The data was produced by from a questionnaire containing open ended questions. The subjects of the investigation nurses, technicians and nurses’ auxiliaries who act in the sectors of the medical clinic, the center of intensive care and emergency in public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After the analysis of the data, two categories emerged: the INFLUENCE and CONFLICT of the concepts about death in the CHOICE and DYNAMICS of ethos of care and death: BEGINNING a new life and END of everything. The results point that the concepts of do not change among the nursing professionals who work in the units studied, and also it seems not to have influenced them when they chose their ethos of care giving. It draws attention that professionals in these units relate a conflict when thinking of death and facing it in their daily care.En este estudio analizamos la influencia de los conceptos de muerte y morir del equipo de Enfermería sobre las prácticas de cuidados en algunos espacios de internación hospitalaria. Los datos se produjeron a partir de la aplicación de un formulario conteniendo preguntas abiertas, siendo los sujetos de la investigación Enfermeros, Técnicos y Auxiliares de Enfermería que actúan en los sectores de Clínica Médica, Unidad de Terapia Intensiva y Emergencia de hospitales de la red pública localizados en el municipio de Rio de Janeiro. Después del análisis de los datos, emergieron dos categorías: la INFLUENCIA y el CONFLICTO de los conceptos acerca de la muerte en la ELECCIÓN y en la DINÁMICA de del ethos del cuidado, y Muerte: INICIO de una nueva vida y FIN de todo.  Los resultados apuntan que los conceptos de muerte no se alteran entre los profesionales de enfermería que actúan en esas unidades investigadas y también parece no haberles influenciado cuando eligieron sus ethos para cuidar. Llama la atención que los profesionales entrevistados relataron conflicto en el pensar la muerte y en encararla en su cotidianidad de cuidar.Neste estudo, analisamos a influência dos conceitos de morte e morrer da equipe de Enfermagem sobre as práticas de cuidar em alguns espaços de internação hospitalar. Os dados foram produzidos a partir da aplicação de um formulário contendo perguntas abertas, sendo os sujeitos da pesquisa, Enfermeiros, Técnicos e Auxiliares de Enfermagem que atuam nos setores de Clínica Médica, Unidade de Terapia Intensiva e Emergência de hospitais da rede pública localizados no município do Rio de Janeiro. Após a análise dos dados, emergiram duas categorias: A INFLUÊNCIA e o CONFLITO dos conceitos acerca da morte na ESCOLHA e na DINAMICA do ethos do cuidado; e Morte: INICIO de uma nova vida e FIM de tudo. Os resultados apontam que os conceitos de morte não se alteram entre os profissionais de enfermagem que atuam nessas unidades pesquisadas e também parece não ter os influenciado quando escolheram os seus ethos para cuidar. Chama atenção que os profissionais entrevistados relataram conflito no pensar a morte, e de encará-la em seu cotidiano de cuidar.

    Purification, characterization and application of laccase from Trametes versicolor for colour and phenolic removal of olive mill wastewater in the presence of 1- hydroxybenzotriazole

    Laccase forms (L1 and L2) from Trametes versicolor CCT 4521 showed a molecular mass of 66 kDa and optimum temperature around 40oC. The optimum pH (4.0 and 5.0) and Km (28.6 and 5 ìM) values usingsyringaldazine as substrate were found for L1 and L2, respectively. The enzymes were able to oxidize several compounds and were strongly inhibited by sodium azide, L-cysteine and dithiothreitol. The 75%of the N-terminal sequences were identical in both forms and similarities around 40 - 60% of laccases from wood-degrading fungi were observed. The use of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole as a mediator increased the compounds oxidized by laccases in olive mill wastewater
