The uncertainty is a characteristic of the firms environment. Many strategic decision models don’t considered the effects of the environment changes. In practice, it is assumed that the strategic results are not affected by environment changes. The objective of the present work is to develop a model that integrate the effects of changes in the economic environment changes on the investment strategies and on the entrepreneur’s strategics preferences. The final result is a simulation model based on the random economic environment that assume the cash-flow as the central concept
Functional form issues in the regression analysis of financial leverage ratios
Linear models are typically used in the regression analysis of capital structure choices. However, given the proportional and bounded nature of leverage ratios, models such as the tobit, the fractional regression model and its two-part variant are a better alternative. In this paper, we discuss the main econometric assumptions and features of those models, provide a theoretical foundation for their use in the regression analysis of leverage ratios and review some statistical tests suitable to assess their specification. Using a dataset previously considered in the literature, we carry out a comprehensive comparison of the alternative models, finding that in this framework the most relevant functional form issue is the choice between a single model for all capital structure decisions and a two-part model that explains separately the decisions to issue debt and, conditional on the first decision, on the amount of debt to issue.Capital structure; Zero leverage; Fractional regression model; Tobit; Twopart model.
Are Capital Structure Decisions of Family-Owned SMEs Different? Empirical Evidence From Portugal
This study analyses if ownership structure is an important determinant of capital structure decisions, on basis of two sub-samples of family-owned and non-family owned SMEs, sing panel data models. The results suggest that family ownership is an important determinant for: i) the variations of short and long-term debt stimulated by the financial deficit; and ii) the rate of adjustment of short and long-term debt toward the respective target levels. The empirical evidence obtained in this study suggests that family-owned firms have the possibility to reach their target short and long-term debt ratios, corroborating the assumptions of Trade-Off Theory. Whereas non-family owned firms follow almost exclusively the behaviour forecasted by Pecking Order Theory, i.e., when internal finance is insufficient, those firms turn to short-term debt, and their variations of short-term debt are almost exclusively a consequence of the financial deficit.Family-Owned SMEs, Long-Term Debt; Non-Family Owned SMEs, Panel Data Models, Short-Term Debt.
A two-part fractional regression model for the financial leverage decisions of micro, small, medium and large firms
In this paper we examine the following two hypotheses which traditional theories of capital structure are relatively silent about: (i) the determinants of financial leverage decisions are different for micro, small, medium and large firms; and (ii) the factors that determine whether or not a firm issues debt are different from those that determine how much debt it issues. Using a binary choice model to explain the probability of a firm raising debt and a fractional regression model to explain the relative amount of debt issued, we find strong support for both hypotheses. Confirming recent empirical evidence, we find also that, although larger firms are more likely to use debt, conditional on having some debt firm size is negatively related to the proportion of debt used by firms
Linear and nonlinear models for the analysis of the relationship between stock market prices and macroeconomic and financial factors
The main objective of this paper is to assess how mutual information as a measure of global dependence between stock markets and macroeconomic factors can overcome some of the weaknesses of the traditional linear approaches commonly used in this context. One of the advantages of mutual information is that it does not require any prior assumption regarding the specification of a theoretical probability distribution or the specification of the dependence model. This study focuses on the Portuguese stock market where we evaluate the relevance of the macroeconomic and financial variables as determinants of the stock prices behaviour.nonlinear dependence, stock market, financial and macroeconomic factors
NONLINEAR DYNAMICS WITHIN MACROECONOMIC FACTORS AND STOCK MARKET IN PORTUGAL, 1993-2003
The main objective of this paper is to assess how mutual information as a measure of
global dependence between stock markets and macroeconomic factors can overcome
some of the weaknesses of the traditional linear approaches commonly used in this
context. One of the advantages of mutual information is that it does not require any prior
assumption regarding the specification of a theoretical probability distribution or the
specification of the dependence model. This study focuses on the Portuguese stock
market where we evaluate the relevance of the macroeconomic and financial variables as
determinants of the stock prices behaviour.

A entidade combinada
This paper examines the valuation effects of mergers & acquisitions in the Portuguese banking
industry from 1995 to 2003 over a 41-day (-20, +20) event window. Evidence shows some targets
gains, but no gains for the bidders. The combined entity (target+bidder) shows no significant gains
contradicting some other European studies but confirming the great majority of American research
This paper reports the findings of a survey conducted in 2003 to study the practices related with
financing decisions of the biggest firms that operate in Portugal. The results about the choice of the
financing sources confirm the conclusions of previous studies carried out in Portugal and suggest the
existence of similar practices at international level. The results show the predominance of pecking
order on the theory of trade-off between equity and debt. The results also confirm the use of a
systematic process of evaluation of financing sources based on financial models and the hedging of the
financial risks. On the other hand, the results also confirm the lack of interest on obtaining equity
capital from the primary stock market and difficulties in the fulfilment of the admission requirements
to this market
