RECORD OF ABERRANT PLUMAGE IN Cyclarhis gujanensis (AVES: VIREONIDAE) IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Cases of birds with aberrant coloring are not an uncommon sight in the wild, but they need to be documented in specialized literature. These abnormalities may be associated with distinct factors, which can be environmental, genetic, food, diseases, exposure to parasites and age, causing increase and/or reduction of melanin, such as carotenism, in the affected species. We are presenting a report of Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Cyclarhis gujanensis) with aberrant coloring in southern Brazil. The specimen had some feathers in the head’s region depigmented to a whitish hue, mixed with feathers presenting regular coloring. Other bare parts and the remaining plumage present normal color. The report is about progressive graying, in what we believe is the first record of aberrant coloring for C. gujanensis through its known distribution

The current study aimed to identify malophages in a population of Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus noctivagus) and Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus obsoletus) in the Pampa Biome, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In 250 hours of sampling efforts, using bell-traps, we captured eleven specimens of C. n. noctivagus, and of these, two of them showed occurrence of feather lice. In C. o. obsoletus, four individuals were captured, and of these, three presented lice. In both tinamous, specimens of Strongylocotes complanatus and Heptapsogaster temporalis (Ischnocera, Philopteridae) were recorded. The frequency of occurrence (FO) of these ectoparasites in C. n. noctivagus was of 18,2%, and in C. o. obsoletus, 75%. We thus report in a descriptive manner additional information about the occurrence of these ectoparasites, associated with forest tinamous of the genus Crypturellus, in Southern Brazil

We present here six new cases of birds with aberrant coloring in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Records were made via non-systematized field activities. We suggested Progressive Greying in Zenaida auriculata, Turdus rufiventris, Leptasthenura setaria, Molothrus bonariensis and for Sporophila collaris a case of Dilution – pastel. The study contributes with new informations about chromatic anomalies in birds’ plumages in Southern Brazil, since these cases must be divulged in specialized literature.
