The Universality of Initial Conditions for Globular Cluster Formation
We investigate a simple model for globular cluster (GC) formation. We
simulate the violent relaxation of initially homogeneous isothermal stellar
spheres and show that it leads to the formation of clusters with radial density
profiles that match the observed profiles of GCs. The best match is achieved
for dynamically unevolved clusters. In this model, all the observed
correlations between global GC parameters are accurately reproduced if one
assumes that all the clusters initially had the same value of the stellar
density and the velocity dispersion. This suggests that the gas which formed

The Dynamical Implications of Multiple Stellar Formation Events in Galactic Globular Clusters
Various galactic globular clusters display abundance anomalies that affect
the morphology of their colour-magnitude diagrams. In this paper we consider
the possibility of helium enhancement in the anomalous horizontal branch of NGC
2808. We examine the dynamics of a self-enrichment scenario in which an initial
generation of stars with a top-heavy initial mass function enriches the
interstellar medium with helium via the low-velocity ejecta of its asymptotic
giant branch stars. This enriched medium then produces a second generation of
stars which are themselves helium-enriched. We use a direct N-body approach to
perform five simulations and conclude that such two-generation clusters are
both possible and would not differ significantly from their single-generation
counterparts on the basis of dynamics. We find, however, that the stellar
populations of such clusters would differ from single-generation clusters with
a standard initial mass function and in particular would be enhanced in white
dwarf stars. We conclude, at least from the standpoint of dynamics, that

Constraining global properties of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy
By fitting a flexible stellar anisotropy model to the observed surface
brightness and line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of Draco we derive a
sequence of cosmologically plausible two-component (stars + dark matter) models
for this galaxy. The models are consistent with all the available observations
and can have either cuspy Navarro-Frenk-White or flat-cored dark matter density
profiles. The dark matter halos either formed relatively recently (at z~2...7)
and are massive (up to ~5x10^9 M_Sun), or formed before the end of the
reionization of the universe (z~7...11) and are less massive (down to ~7x10^7
M_Sun). Our results thus support either of the two popular solutions of the
"missing satellites" problem of Lambda cold dark matter cosmology - that dwarf
spheroidals are either very massive, or very old. We carry out high-resolution
simulations of the tidal evolution of our two-component Draco models in the
potential of the Milky Way. The results of our simulations suggest that the
observable properties of Draco have not been appreciably affected by the
Galactic tides after 10 Gyr of evolution. We rule out Draco being a "tidal
dwarf" - a tidally disrupted dwarf galaxy. Almost radial Draco orbits (with the
pericentric distance <15 kpc) are also ruled out by our analysis. The case of a
harmonic dark matter core can be consistent with observations only for a very
limited choice of Draco orbits (with the apocentric-to-pericentric distances

Models of Individual Blue Stragglers
This chapter describes the current state of models of individual blue
stragglers. Stellar collisions, binary mergers (or coalescence), and partial or
ongoing mass transfer have all been studied in some detail. The products of
stellar collisions retain memory of their parent stars and are not fully mixed.
Very high initial rotation rates must be reduced by an unknown process to allow
the stars to collapse to the main sequence. The more massive collision products
have shorter lifetimes than normal stars of the same mass, while products
between low mass stars are long-lived and look very much like normal stars of
their mass. Mass transfer can result in a merger, or can produce another binary
system with a blue straggler and the remnant of the original primary. The
products of binary mass transfer cover a larger portion of the colour-magnitude
diagram than collision products for two reasons: there are more possible
configurations which produce blue stragglers, and there are differing
contributions to the blended light of the system. The effects of rotation may
be substantial in both collision and merger products, and could result in
significant mixing unless angular momentum is lost shortly after the formation
event. Surface abundances may provide ways to distinguish between the formation
mechanisms, but care must be taking to model the various mixing mechanisms
properly before drawing strong conclusions. Avenues for future work are

Quality of Life Explorer Prototype to Address Socio-economic Problems: A Design Science Approach
This study develops a visualization Proof of Concept that is aimed at improving the quality of life for the city in the South-Eastern part of US as a case study. Using design science research method, we create interactive visual maps called the quality of life explorer (QoLE) for improving the livelihood of residents of the city under study. We then used analytics techniques to customize the map and enhance its visualization and interactivity capabilities in a way that is simple to understand and use. Furthermore, the QoLE website has a built-in capability that allows report generation as well as increase interactivity of Map and data distribution tables. The outcome of this study will help the city authorities and residents to better visualize the data in a smarter and realistic way so that they can make informed decisions in redeveloping their city. More specifically, the study outcomes will help the City authorities and stakeholders integrate the disparate data into a centralized location for easy accessibility and use for decision making
Genetic maps of Saccharum officinarum L. and Saccharum robustum Brandes & Jew ex grassl.
Genetic analysis was performed in a population composed of 100 F1 individuals derived from a cross between a cultivated sugarcane (S. officinarum La Purple) and its proposed progenitor species (S. robustum "Mol 5829'). Various types (arbitrarily primed-PCR, RFLPs, and AFLPs) of single-dose DNA markers (SDMs) were used to construct genetic linkage maps to both species. The LA Purple map was composed of 341 SDMs, spanning 74 linkage groups and 1.881 cM, white the Mol 5829 map contained 301 SDMs, spanning 65 linkage gropus and 1,189 cM, Transmission genetics in these two species showed incomplete polysomy based on the detection of 15% of SDMs linked in repulsion in LA Purple and 13% of these in Mol 5829. Because of this incomplete polysomy, multiple-dose markers could not be mapped for lack of a genetic model for their segregation. Due to inclusion of RFLP anchor probes, conserved in related species, the resulting maps will serve as useful tools for breeding, ecology, evolution, and molecular biology studies within the Andropogoneae
Array comparative genomic hybridization screening in IVF significantly reduces number of embryos available for cryopreservation
Objective
During IVF, non-transferred embryos are usually selected for cryopreservation on the basis of morphological criteria. This investigation evaluated an application for array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) in assessment of surplus embryos prior to cryopreservation.
Methods
First-time IVF patients undergoing elective single embryo transfer and having at least one extra non-transferred embryo suitable for cryopreservation were offered enrollment in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups: Patients in group A (n=55) had embryos assessed first by morphology and then by aCGH, performed on cells obtained from trophectoderm biopsy on post-fertilization day 5. Only euploid embryos were designated for cryopreservation. Patients in group B (n=48) had embryos assessed by morphology alone, with only good morphology embryos considered suitable for cryopreservation.
Results
Among biopsied embryos in group A (n=425), euploidy was confirmed in 226 (53.1%). After fresh single embryo transfer, 64 (28.3%) surplus euploid embryos were cryopreserved for 51 patients (92.7%). In group B, 389 good morphology blastocysts were identified and a single top quality blastocyst was selected for fresh transfer. All group B patients (48/48) had at least one blastocyst remaining for cryopreservation. A total of 157 (40.4%) blastocysts were frozen in this group, a significantly larger proportion than was cryopreserved in group A (p=0.017, by chi-squared analysis).
Conclusion
While aCGH and subsequent frozen embryo transfer are currently used to screen embryos, this is the first investigation to quantify the impact of aCGH specifically on embryo cryopreservation. Incorporation of aCGH screening significantly reduced the total number of cryopreserved blastocysts compared to when suitability for freezing was determined by morphology only. IVF patients should be counseled that the benefits of aCGH screening will likely come at the cost of sharply limiting the number of surplus embryos available for cryopreservation
Discovery of another peculiar radial distribution of Blue Stragglers in Globular Clusters: The case of 47 Tuc
We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and wide field ground-based
observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the
globular cluster 47 Tuc spanning the entire radial extent of the cluster.
The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly
decreases at intermediate radii, and finally rises again at larger radii. The
observed distribution closely resembles that discovered in M3 by Ferraro et al
(1993,1997). To date, complete BSS surveys covering the full radial extent (HST
in the center and wide field CCD ground based observations of the exterior)
have been performed for only these two clusters. Both show a bimodal radial
distribution, despite their different dynamical properties. BSS surveys
covering the full spatial extent of more globular clusters are clearly required
to determine how common bimodality is and what its consequence is for theories

Discovery of Carbon/Oxygen depleted Blue Straggler Stars in 47 Tucanae: the chemical signature of a mass-transfer formation process
We use high-resolution spectra obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope to
measure surface abundance patterns of 43 Blue Stragglers stars (BSS) in 47 Tuc.
We discovered that a sub-population of BSS shows a significant depletion of
Carbon and Oxygen with respect to the dominant population. This evidence would
suggest the presence of CNO burning products on the BSS surface coming from a
deeply peeled parent star, as expected in the case of mass-transfer process.
This is the first detection of a chemical signature clearly pointing to a

Correlations from gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging after methotrexate chemotherapy for hemorrhagic placenta increta
OBJECTIVE: To describe pre- and post-methotrexate (MTX) therapy images from pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadopentetate dimeglumine contrast following chemotherapy for post-partum hemorrhage secondary to placenta increta. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A 28-year-old Caucasian female presented 4 weeks post-partum complaining of intermittent vaginal bleeding. She underwent dilatation and curettage immediately after vaginal delivery for suspected retained placental tissue but 28 d after delivery, the serum β-hCG persisted at 156 IU/mL. Office transvaginal sonogram (4 mHz B-mode) was performed, followed by pelvic MRI using a 1.5 Tesla instrument after administration of gadolinium-based contrast agent. MTX was administered intramuscularly, and MRI was repeated four weeks later. RESULTS: While transvaginal sonogram suggested retained products of conception confined to the endometrial compartment, an irregular 53 × 34 × 28 mm heterogeneous intrauterine mass was noted on MRI to extend into the anterior myometrium, consistent with placenta increta. Vaginal bleeding diminished following MTX treatment, with complete discontinuation of bleeding achieved by ~20 d post-injection. MRI using identical technique one month later showed complete resolution of the uterine lesion. Serum β-hCG was <5 IU/mL. CONCLUSION: Reduction or elimination of risks associated with surgical management of placenta increta is important to preserve uterine function and reproductive potential. For selected hemodynamically stable patients, placenta increta may be treated non-operatively with MTX as described here. A satisfactory response to MTX can be ascertained by serum hCG measurements with pre- and post-treatment pelvic MRI with gadopentetate dimeglumine enhancement, which offers advantages over standard transvaginal sonography
